One reason I don't see doctors - mindofmyownsorry

How's this for arrogance:

"In the past she had been given this medication, which she had declined due to reading the package insert, so I advised her not to read package inserts and just use the medication as prescribed."

Not going to the doctor because of what someone else said or did, I hope that continues to work for you. Should you be publicly quoting info from patient health records? Even if there is no identifiable patient info, I wonder if it's advisable to be doing that.

It happens to work... - Lynn

for lots of people. I also stay away from doctors as much as possible. You end up with far more problems after seeing one. All they know to do is prescribe drugs and tests and then surgery. Most of them know absolutely nothing about nutrition and the role it plays in keeping us healthy. I stay healthier by avoiding them. It does work for me.

If your doctor doesn't discuss nutrition with you and recommend healthy lifestyle choices, it's time to find another doctor. Generally, the conservative things are tried first. If the patient chooses not to follow advice, that is not the doctor's fault, communication is a 2-way street. Who is this "you" who ends up with more problems after seeing a doctor, certainly not me.

I've NEVER had any doctor discuss nutrition with me...EVER. They tell me to see a nutritionist. In fact, all of them pooh-pooh it, as if it doesn't have anything at all to do with our health. They would feel this way since most doctors only have 4 hours of nutrition courses in college. Finding those types of doctors is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I know of two, one in NJ and one in CA and I live in neither place so finding one like that is out of the question. It IS the doctor's fault if the patient decides the "advice/suggestion/recommendation" is unsafe and wishes not to comply and the doctor uses intimidation or harrassment to get the patient to comply. We all should be given the option to do what we feel is safe for us and most doctors have a "do as I say" attitude. No.....most people end up with more problems after seeing a doctor. Drugs are not the long-term answer for any health problem and it has become the "norm." You take one drug and then another and another and another to counteract the side effects of each drug. Like I said...you end up with even more problems. Everyone in my family (young and old alike) takes more than one prescription drug. My family thinks I am the oddball because I don't take anything, not even aspirin, at my age(59). They seem to think taking a drug is inevitable. Doctors have given us this impression...one which I refuse to buy, which is why I won't see one unless I have a broken bone or involved in some type of accident. Do you take more than one drug?? If you do, your doctor has made more problems for you. ; )

what?? - are you kidding?

I worked in a doctor's office some time ago and one of my duties was to remove the package inserts from all samples so the patient would not be able to read them. Don't think this is an isolated instance and for heaven's sake don't invoke HIPAA.

I had an allergic reaction to Macrobid. - mthead

[ In Reply To ..]
Never had an allergic reaction before or since. Within an hour of taking my first pill, I developed a sunburn-like rash and tingling around my mouth and in my extremities. I called the ER and they said to come in, but I waited b/c I didn't have a ride to the hospital and the symptoms gradually declined. When I called my doctor to ask him to change my medication, he said it was all in my head and that I shouldn't read the package inserts, but he did change my med. I switched doctors after that. Coincidentally, my mom just had her first-ever allergic reaction, and it was also to Macrobid.

No arrogance on the doctor's part... Sm - Old Woman

[ In Reply To ..]
There are a lot of side effects to various medications based on the blind studies the drug companies do when testing the drugs. Some of the side effects don't actually relate to the medication, but if they are reported, they must be included.

My mother is one who reads the inserts and worries herself silly because of the side effects. She doesn't like taking a lot of medications, but at her age, they are necessary. Don't blame the doctor for arrogance; blame the patient for being neurotic.

Medications are never.... - Lynn

[ In Reply To ..]
necessary at any age. I certainly hope my children don't try to drug me when I get older...simply because of my age. I know plenty of older people who don't take drugs. They're only "necesary" if you don't want to make the effort to stay healthy. Thanks for the laugh.

I find it ironic that you seem to disdain Western medicine - Yet make your bread and butter from it

[ In Reply To ..]
Kind of like running a daycare when one despises children.

Just...ironic and odd.
I sometimes think that way myself actually... - Lynn
[ In Reply To ..]
but I also look at it this way...If I worked in Walmart, I still wouldn't buy everything they sold. It is the same with doctors. Although doctors can work wonders and save lives, they also take lives. The number one cause of death in this country is iatrogenic related. I don't buy everything they have to sell and I don't have to but that doesn't mean I don't need a job and I'm good at what I do, so why not?? Most of us have some kind of beef with the people who employ us. Not really so ironic when you really think about it...as I have.
Just to add... - Lynn
[ In Reply To ..]
I also don't have to work around doctors with my job. That's another reason I do what I do. If I had to work in close contact with doctors, I wouldn't be interested in this type of work. I do happen to love children very much and, if I had to choose, would prefer to work around children rather than doctors. Doctors tend to be arrogant and intimidating. They complain if you actually want to take an active role in the decisions you make about your own health. They expect you to obey and not question their recommendations. I really don't have much use for them but I don't and won't make decisions for other people so I don't mind transcribing. Some doctors seem to harbor disdain for their patients as well. Years ago, a doctor nearly let my daughter die. Even though I told him repeatedly I thought it was her appendix, he sent her home with antibiotics and a "bad case of stomach flu" because he was the doctor who had the training...so he told me. Our youngest son was born in a porta-potty (long story) because of incompetent doctors. I've had more bad experiences with doctors than good. I'll stay behind the scenes to make my living because that's the way I prefer it. Lots of people work at jobs where they don't like their employer to make a living. It's not really that ironic.

I never read the inserts, but if I feel odd after medication, I look to see - if it is indeed a side effect or me. sm

but that's me and I know from working the industry most of the hype was started to protect the drug company and/or the MD's a$$ - ahd has now become REFERENCE MATERIAL for lawyers in need of a juicy class action lawsuit.

Modern-day ampulance chansing, right from the comfort of home.

Not neurotic - just want to be informed. - Petunia

I always weigh the risks and benefits before taking any medication. I use the inserts to form my own opinion. FYI - you are considered a guinea pig taking any medication that has been on the market less than 7 years. There are TOO MANY deaths related to not well tested medications hitting the market. I value my life.

Thanks Petunia - JustMe

[ In Reply To ..]
Patients have every right to be informed and make their own decisions regarding their healthcare. I think most doctors would rather their patients do a little of their own research so that they can be more proactive in their own health. I am currently pregnant and my doctor recently prescribed a sleeping pill. When I started doing some research I found that this pill has been known to cause birth defects. I decided to stop the medication and will discuss this at my next appointment. Doctors are only human and been known to make mistakes, overlook other drugs you're taking thus causing drug interaction issues, forget about other medical conditions you have, etc. We are all ultimately responsible for our own wellbeing. The days of "because the doctor said so and he's God" are over.
Dr. God - mindofmyownsorry

My original point exactly. However, the doctors themselves don't yet get it and probably never will, as most of them (in my experience) are way too arrogant and stuck on their own self-assumed superiority.

Petunia - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know if you realize it, but every imaginable side effect is quoted in that literature, the odds of much of that occurring are extremely high. No one said anything about taking meds that weren't well tested, there are many options, your doctor should be offering more than one choice. Most of us are not stupid and of course weigh the risks and benefits before taking anything. I think you need to look at the statistics on medication related deaths instead of watching ads on TV from ambulance chasing attorneys.
Well-tested medications... - Lynn
[ In Reply To ..]
are a fallacy. They are ALL supposed to be "well-tested" before they are prescribed to us. Many "well-tested" medications are the result of ongoing law suits. "Well-tested" could mean something different to us all in terms of time. Most of us are not stupid but most of us won't weigh the risks of anything. Most of us do exactly as our doctors tell us and that's where the problem lies, IMHO.

Reason For So Much
Oct 03, 2012

I have read countless articles today that state that the reason that so much MT work is being outsourced is b/c there are lack of MTs on the US side working in the industry.  I love when the uneducated write these articles.  They are totally missing the entire reason work is outsourced, MONEY.  There would be plenty US based MTs to do the work provided we were paid what we are worth.  The reason the work even went over to India and other countries is b/c it is cheaper for the ...

What Could Be The Reason For Odd Line Counts?

According to the Escript, I'm doing an average of 300 lph on VR but usually at the end of 8 hours, I don't top 1100 liines most days.  On Dictaphone's ExSpeech, i used to consistently do 1800-2400 a day on a combination. Possible Reason Only Some MTs Got Back Wages
Aug 08, 2013

My employer, who has several VA contracts, was audited by the DOL last year.  The findings of the audit were that the employer should have been paying us the prevailing hourly wage because the contracts were federal government contracts.  Many people got back pay for the period of time for which the books were audited, but not everyone did because the DOL only audited one of our accounts.  Even though all the rest of the MTs were paid exactly the same way (on a production basis), ...

To CA MTs: I Was Told The Reason I Was Laid Off (along With Others) Is That

MM was laying off a lot of PT MTs. I accepted that since I have always passed their ridiculous 98% (and higher) audits and always worked my shift, etc. So no reason to fire me. However, I've been wondering if the real reason (since I see there are still PT MTs here) is that they don't want any employees from California (or any other state where the minimum wage is too high in their eyes). What do you all think? Are there any FT or PT CA MTs from MModal still working for MModal? ...

The Reason For The Low Work Loads Is Multifactorial.
