migraine headaches? - Me
Posted: Feb 08, 2013
I got on this new account and the Management on this team are so anal, I just started and training a week and a half ago on some very difficut doctors. One doc is so fast but I don't have an ear for him yet, so I sent it to my team lead and she found what she called a critical error (sentence missing). I felt like I committed a crime and now feel like she is building a case against me.
They said they don't want any more errors and I have to take as long as I have to to figure out what they are saying and don't send the doctors any blanks, or if I have to send a blank only one or two and then strive very quickly not to do that again. read and re-read. Which I do but then when I have that one report that is impossible to figure out what he is saying I actually get a migraine headache because I don't dare send it to QA and I'm afraid to send blanks to the doctor. They want the impossible. I have been doing this for 30 years and never saw anyone like this. I found out everybody has problems with these doctors and because they get yelled at for poor transcription, we well get "yelled" at. The doctors are the worst dictators in the United States. My head pounds in fear every day. Anyone else like that out there?

I was starting to get a migraine, just reading a description of your work circumstances. I am job hunting (again) looking for fewer hours (if I can't get them at current job). I think...I COULD go back and do some transcription...then I read something like your post, and it inoculates me, if you will, against anything so crazy and damaging.
But...sigh...I did just get over shingles last week, and now I have an earache verging on sore throat. I composed my email, as far as asking for fewer hours, and this earache is giving me more determination to Get Fewer Hours.
I hope we both get into better job situations...however, your migraine-inducer of a job is WORSE!!!! My condolences!!!
Did they give you samples of the dictators on this account? - FBL

If not, I would definitely ask for some, and some GOOD ones, not the first one they see in history. You might ask for the final drafts of what you are sending to proofing, to use for future reference. If they can't/won't work with you at all, I would go over the team lead's head, or contact HR and ask what the process is to file a formal grievance. This harassment and badgering throughout the industry just has to stop, IMO.

Better than that, I think particularly with fast dictators that they should be made to go back and see if they can understand/type what they dictate and if they can , that is good, but it they can not they should have to do it again. If they can't understand what they are saying, then how can we?
sorry you're getting the short end of this stick - BeenThereMT

This is a classic case of "garbage in, garbage out." There are just times when the dictation is so horrid, either the sound quality is degraded, the dictator mumbles beyond comprehension, or speeds through the report without enunciating that there is no way that anyone could be positive of what that dictator said. Even if you have multiple samples of each dictator, you might feel as though you are taking an educated guess, especially when it has to deal with meds and dosages.
I know that the MTSOs have little leverage with getting the clients and dictators to clean up their acts, but they also cannot blame a seasoned MT for being unable to grasp a poor dictator's garbage speech habits.
If this account is actually a re-record, then that would make the situation even more intolerable.
IMO, if you have worked for this company on other accounts and did not have this problem, then obviously it's the account, not your ability. Once you have transcribed for any length of time, you can pretty much transcribe any dictator that comes along, other than syntax peculiarities for that region of the country or name brand instruments specific to that facility.
I personally would request to be removed from this account. Offer to take on another account with the explanation that not all shoes are a good fit.
Then, I'd be looking for a new place to work. This sort of attitude from your supervisors is totally unacceptable.
Hope you found something that worked for your headaches. Migraines are a bummer.
