Years ago, I worked at a very large teaching hospital and was doing a report from a first year resident. He said the patient had cancer of the osso vagus. Clear as day - osso vagus. About five of us listened to it and all came up with the same thing (It's an unwritten rule that you don't tell your listener what you think it is).
Osso refers to bone and vagus refers to the 10th cranial nerve. We couldn't make sense of it. I finally called his floor to talk to him about this word and ahe kept saying "You know - she has cancer of the osso vagus, the OSSO VAGUS". I asked if he could give me a little more description of the body part. He said it was the tube that connected the throat to the stomach. In a surprised voice, I said: "You mean esophagus?" I got a positive reply. I thanked him, hung up and told the girls what it was. We were laughing so hard.
