Wow, this article describes climate of MT field. - sm

With unemployment still high, job seekers who have been discouraged by a lack of work might be inclined to take the first opportunity they're offered. That will help pay the bills, but it could cause other problems: A new study suggests that some jobs are so demoralizing they're actually worse for mental health than not working at all.

Unemployed people who found a job that rated well in these areas reported a substantial improvement in their mental health. By contrast, newly employed people who felt overwhelmed, insecure about their employment, underpaid, and micromanaged reported a sharp decline in their mental health, including increased symptoms of depression and anxiety. Even those who couldn't find a job fared better.

Managers are especially important to employee well-being, says Robert Hogan, Ph.D., an expert on personality in the workplace and a former chair of the department of psychology at the University of Tulsa. "Bad bosses will make anybody unhappy," Hogan says. "Stress comes from bad managers."

Policy-makers should address the impact that the workplace has on mental -- and not just physical -- health, Butterworth says. "In the same way that we no longer accept workplaces that are physically unsafe or in which employees are exposed to dangerous or toxic substances, there could be a greater focus on ensuring a more positive psychosocial environment at work."

That explains why the one summer I spent out - on disability was the best of my life. sm

So what if I had surgery, pain, couldn't drive, etc. Physical pain was nothing compared to the mental stress this job puts us under every day. Some days I don't even get out of bed if I'm really stressed out and depressed. I skip the snooze button, yank the clock's electrical cord out of the wall, and hurl it into the wall on the other side of the room. I hafta buy a lot of clocks because of that, but it feels SOOO good to do it. In fact, slamming just about anything, living or inanimate, into the wall, would feel good on those particular mornings.

The climate (no, mantle) of slavery chafes and no matter where you look it's the same story. It has become a 'choice' of one form or another, but all the same stuff. The overwhelming lack of respect fills me w/'shock and awe.' I can't wait to watch the smug ones when their turn comes up. :- )
I am not one who has EVER said am grateful to have a job. Have had 'nada' before and can do it again, esp'ly now that am alone except for my dog. We'll make it. GIVE ME LIBERTY (& DIGNITY) OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!!!!!!!

Give you poverty more like. - Serene $50K MT (for now anyway)

You won't be able to enjoy the "smug ones'" comeuppance, should it occur, with your power turned off. Respect yourself and you won't need displays of it from others. Make some money and you can board your dog while you tour Italy.
I'd enjoy the smug-ones' comeuppance even if - my pacemaker was turned off w/the power!

It's GOOD when the evil-doers of this world finally get what they deserve. I just hope I can hold out long enough to see it happen to all those bloated MTSOs.

Too bad they can't see it... - EnSainMT

The sad part is no matter how horrible the manager or awful the company, the effects their treatment and policies have on us work-at-homes go unnoticed because they cannot actually "see" the true damage...face-to-face. As long as their work is getting done, they could care less what's happening to our psyche. I would like to say that I hope it gets better one day but don't think I'm actually going to stick around long enough to find out. After only 5 years, I'm extremely exhausted, overwhelmed, and at this point at my mental end with the "gar-baj."

Opinion - Need to work

[ In Reply To ..]
I know we should be greatful for the jobs we have, but it has been my experience that when they know you need the job and are self supporting, they hold your job over your head and made to feel like the shoe is going to drop at any minute. It is not only my opinion but others that work for the MTSO I work for. Not to mention managers who never return phone calls or e-mails. There are so many of us out there that we are made to feel that we are expendable. On top of that not having any work.

There is a survey below where we can give ourselves - a voice (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
You are spot on about no one seeing what we go through at the home office. This has changed so much from the time I started. I actually used to LOVE my job.

Yes, the survey is sponsored by AHDI, but they don't control it. So much publicity has been put out by AHDI to their people to take the survey. So unless people outside of AHDI take it, it will have skewed results and not reflect the true conditions we work under.

AHDI's survey sponsorship would explain why, - in their previous findings, they - sm

claimed they didn't know why membership was falling after they changed from AAMT to AHDI.

And of course, we all know the answer to THAT question.
That's why WE need to respond to the survey. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
If nobody responds to the survey, then only the answers from those in AHDI will be recorded and the whole MT situation will appear rosy and perfect. WE outside of AHDI need to give our opinions as well so that the survey isn't skewed by AHDI.
The survey's done by a professor at Bentley - University in Massachusetts.

I participated in the first one and this one. The data collected are VERY interesting, even if they do seem to contradict A few of the assumptions constantly hot-aired here.

I don't think it contradicts is as much anymore. - Hence, another study
[ In Reply To ..]
There have been a lot of changes in the last four years as is manifest by the need for the follow-up study only four years later. And like was mentioned, the 2007 study was not as widely advertised and was completed mostly by AHDI members.

Where is the link to the preliminary 2007 study?
It's going to be interesting, I think. The link's at - Pragmatist

the bottom of the last message for the old survey.

You know, even though the 2007 survey may had a somewhat higher than representative # of AHDI respondents, who are a tiny subgroup of MTs, it was posted on this forum and others, which is how I heard of it. In any case, I feel the results are of real value to those of us who roughly fit the profile of the respondents. Whatever one thinks of the organization itself, those earnest people who wrote out their checks probably tend overall to try at least a little harder and perform at least somewhat better than the average, which is pulled down by that other subgroup of our colleagues who, for whatever reasons, fall below the level of functioning required of someone doing this work, or any work of a similar level.

where is the survey? - tynkerbelle

MT Field
Oct 27, 2009

Don't you wonder why when you were in school you were told about how many jobs there were out there, how your income was endless and depended on how much work you wanted to do? I do have a job, not one that I can live off of, I earn about $200 every other week, but still, at least I have a job. I look at the job board and see how many people have viewed each job and wonder...at least it is just not me, where is the work? I wish that when I was researching school and such that they woul ...

Been out there a long time.  People are either cut-throat, manipulative and shmooze, or your best friend to your face, yet clickish and cruel.   (and I SO missed high school) Since when is all of that necessary?  Want something?  ASK ME DIRECT and if I cannot help you - STOP THERE.   Something I said in confidence rub you wrong?  TALK TO ME ABOUT IT.  ESPECIALLY WHEN I SENSE IT AND FLAT OUT ASK.  I'm so tired of the games p ...

To Those Leaving The MT Field
Mar 01, 2010

How long do you think MT'ing will be around?   I'm going back to school to become a social worker, something i've always wanted to do, and need the income while i'm in school.  In fact, today was my first day.  Its an online course and it will take some adjusting, but I feel its time.  I'm following a dream, MT'ing was supposed to be temporary but it is such a cushy job, who would want to leave it?   I think the problem is, there ...

Learning A New Field
Mar 03, 2010

What would be the best way to get into another field? I have been doing neurology now for about 6 years and I am very interested in getting into something else, and really this is the only field I know because I havent had practice with anything else.  Im just getting kind of bored with the neurology lingo.  If I were to apply for a job that is hiring in a different field, would they consider me a "newby"? Has anyone ever been hired for a field they have no ex ...

How Many Of You Really Left The Field
Mar 03, 2010

I'm just curious is all.  I've been reading for months a lot of posts of people who are unhappy, their going to leave, telll their bosses off, they deserve more, etc, etc.  It's literally been going on months.  I have a job I like, it pays lower than all the people here say they get paid, but I like it.  There are times we run out of work, but I make due (and I'm a one income family, so is distressing sometimes), but  I like my doctors and my supervis ...

What Attracted You To The MT Field?
Mar 07, 2010

I didn't know what I wanted to do.  I was very independent and a home body.  I'm also very disciplined and prefer to work alone.  When I made more than my friends with degrees, I stayed...I feel like a criminal for how much I got paid for how little I do.  Easy money, ability to stay home, no managers lurking over shoulder.  We are the last man on the totem pole here in the medical "profession" and we are getting cut out.  It was too good to last forever. ...

Mar 26, 2010

You know the MT field is bad when even the fly-by-night "work-at-home" make $20 an hour companies don't even advertise for MT anymore.  My husband has been job hunting and we've been checking the online job search engines daily.  I haven't seen one single ad like we used to see on the matchbook covers.  Now they have a different scheme.  It's all work at home in call centers and make $20 an hour.      ...

I Just Have To Say This About This Field Of Work
Oct 15, 2010

I am going to be anonny as I do not want people to know who I am and call me lazy or whatever they decide to call me.  I lost a job not long ago, found another one for peanuts, but am going to turn them down as I can get more unemployment.  Plus with unemployment, I know how much I can count on each week.  It is steady.  I know it will not last forever, but....  I am just tired of the stress and worry of is there going to be any work.  At least now I know how much I ...

What Happened To Our Field?
Mar 23, 2011

Why can't it just go back to the way it was? Those of us who have been transcribing for 20+ years are kind of hurting now, or anyway I am. I used to have a service, had no middle men, no corporate people to support. This was back in the 80's, and the only limitations I had were demographics. If I took work too far away, I had to have more and more delivery people, but at that time, there were only a hand full of transcriptionists.  Those were the days of "a line is a line", "pica ...

My Observation About This Field...
Apr 26, 2011

I have been a working MT (IC status) for 5 years now.  I am finally making pretty good money, but I have always worked around kids and had to take the first few years slowly.  I file jointly with my husband and even had him get more deductions taken out of his checks.  This year, after deductions, I was able to get an 1800.00 refund.  I consider this good considering I didn't pay anything all year (quarterly).  Here is my observation...it seems the the MT field is a ...

Another Dying Field...
Mar 28, 2012

I hope you'll watch this video about photojournalists.  It's very interesting all on its own, but particularly how the major news agencies are refusing to pay for professional quality and using free amateur photos instead. In particular, I would like you to observe what the expert Ed Greenberg says about how photojournalists are viewed by the news agencies - as "passive and childlike".  People who are too timid to protest the way they are being treated.  People ...

When Looking For A Non-MT Job In Medical Field
Dec 29, 2012

Do you use the title of MLS instead of MT? Is that the more appropriate title we have now according to AHDI? Do recruiters or office personnel know what an MLS is or what we do? Maybe I should just stick with MT. What do you put on your resume? Thanks. ...

To any former MT who has left the field: Have you ever regretted it and wished to come back or did come back? I've been an MT only 5 years and I feel stuck in which career path to go down.
