Where is the history of MT recorded??? - Nathan

Posted: Dec 04, 2010

I need to find a credible source/s providing a detailed history of medical transcription - does anyone have any suggestions?

I am a transcription supervisor writing a research paper on transcription for the degree program I'm currently in and the "history of" section I planned to include is proving pretty difficult to compose due to a severe lack of information.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

to learn transcription was when I was in college getting my AA degree in medical assisting. Back then, they used typewriters and there were no computers. The rules of transcription were based on the English language and medical terminology, not what the current trend was as it seems most people reply nowadays. If you wanted to research something or a spelling, etc. you went to the library and checked out books and microfiche to look up old news article, etc. I do not know of anywhere you can find info, but maybe if you do not find much on the Internet, try the library. Good luck and hope you find what you need.

Thanks old gal, I have been doing a lot of searching in libraries, in fact I really NEED to find books, medical journal articles, etc. Physician library at the hospital I work at, the library at the college I attend and two public libraries so far. Today I'm going to to check out another public library and the one at the community college. Most times I can't even use information I find on the internet, because it is rarely documented by a credible source and most times it's just submitted by a semi-knowledgeable user(i.e. Wikipedia), not a scholarly peer reviewed source that I can use for a research paper.

So when I ask for sources I'm hoping for actual book titles that I can check out & read or the name of medical journals that would include studies in medical transcription. Sorry, I should have made myself clearer. It was late last night and I was grasping at straws in reaching out in forums and such. I figure somewhere out there somewhere out there someone has recorded the history of how the business originated and evolved I just have to find it.

Good luck! Hope you find what you need - old gal

Have you contacted AHIMA? - LMJ

I can't remember their exact name back in the day, but 40 years ago, they had a program that included the history of transcription. They were the body that did "training" and what not for transcription back in the day.

UNLESS, you are looking for the original history of transcription via scribes, etc. I'm guessing you mean the history of our modern-day transcription.

I used to have a book on this, I'll see if I can remember the dang name of it!

Good luck!

I have not, but I will. I have contacted AHDI and I am awaiting a response from them.

And yes I'm referring to more modern medical transcription. I was able to find a few sources as far as the origins of transcription but I need to fill the gap between the 50's and the 90's, when "medical" transcription took form.

Thanks for the suggestion.

sounds like you'll have to do some interviewing and piece it together. - yours probably first actual written. Luck! NM

Then definitely - LMJ

contact AHIMA. AHDI was born out of AHIMA many years back, but AHIMA originated out of Chicago and I believe the history book I read took the history back to the 30s-40s and brought it forward.

I emailed them this morning right after my response. If they have, or can even tell me the name of, a book that takes MT history back that far that would be AMAZING!!!

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

You are correct about that, a couple of the women that I work with are 20+ year veterans and I'll be interviewing to take advantage of their knowledge - I know they have seen a lot of changes. But that part of the research hasn't come along yet. I need legitimate documented dates and facts.

some of us have been around 35+ yrs. - sm

but I do understand the need for documented dates, facts. What about researching the advent of specific equipment, schools of MT, pay scales, when there was an actual MT designation, not a medical secretary that also answered the phone, handled patients, and such? It seems so crazy for myself, for example, to look back and remember when getting a selectic typewriter that had an automatic carriage return seemed so very high-tech. good luck!

Just a wild thought, in case you have not done it already, which you probably have - Michelle

I am sure you have already done this, but sometimes when someone is looking at the big picture, they totally miss seeing the little things they can do.

Have you looked at all the books about Medical Transcription on sites like Amazon?  I did a quick search and found one title:  You're a Medical What!?: A Lighthearted Peek into the World of a Medical Transcriptionist.  This particular book allows you to look at the index and also the reference sources at the end.

Maybe there are other books that have an introduction or chapter on the evolution of medical transcription and also have references sources listed at the end that you can then search out yourself by finding that book or magazine at your library.

Just a suggestion.

Good luck on your research.

I have been checking the sources of the few materials I have found, but I did not consider using amazon like that - I didn't realize you could see indexes & sources on books via the details, I will definitely check into that.

Thanks.

Here you go - Tara

According to the book called "Medical Transcription Fundamentals, this is what it says:

"As evidenced by ancient cave drawings, people have attempted to keep records of some sort since the beginning of human existence. Although the medium changed from cave walls to stone tablets, from papyrus to parchment, and now from paper to electronic files, the reason for maintaining records remains the same to document an individual's history and achievements. In the days when few people could read or write, those who could, called scribes, were hired to copy and interpret the spoken words of others. They transcribed sacred orations into the written rules and procedures by which a society governs its citizens.

Medical transcription originated in the early 1900s when medical stenographers helped physicians document all of the interactions between a physician and a patient. A stenographer, a person skilled in the transcription of speech, accompanied the physician during visitswith patients, listening and taking down the physician's dictation shorthand to document the medical record on a manual typewriter.

During World War I, when dictation recording equipment first became available, physicians began to use this equipment to dictate their findings and treatment plans so that a transcriptionist might produce a written record at a later time. As physicians came to rely on the judgment and reasonig of experienced MTs to safeguard the accuracy and integrity of medical dictation, the MT evolved into a medical language specialist. As technology improves, the role of the MT will evolve into that of a medical language editor who reviews and corrects reports generated by voice recognition software to ensure the accurate processing of patient health information."

Hope this helps!

MT History - Nathan

Thanks for all your replies. I have found a little good info and changed the format of my paper some so it demands less as far as history is concerned just because so little seems to be documented about the subject. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, that's when I'll be sitting down to try and compile what I've gathered into Chapter II. Wish me luck and by all means if you have any more suggestions(especially book titles or publications) let me know.

Thanks again for all the responses.
