What a 65 VBC line rate? Is this good or bad? - Confused
Posted: Nov 15, 2012
I have never heard of this before. Can someone explain this? Is this different than just a plain 65-character line? Thanks.

It means "visible black character." In other words, you don't get paid for spaces. Most companies pay for 65 VBCs, or your per line rate would be for 65 characters that you type.
So if you are offered 0.085 for 65-character line, would this be good? - Confused

I know it will less than a 65-character line with spaces but I wonder if it is a noticeable difference on your paycheck?
why don't you - BamaM0M

cut/paste a typical day's worth of transcription (or even a few notes, etc.) and then run through Word's word count both with spaces and without. that should tell you what you need to know.

In this industry right now, I don't think that is half bad. If you use expanders and macros, you should be able to do pretty well.
65 with spaces is roughly the same as 55 VBC - anon

I have checked this with large documents in Word, you can check for yourself. Take the total characters WITH spaces and divide by 65 to get a line count, do the same for the count WITHOUT spaces and divide by 55, and you will be within 1 line difference. I checked this out because my current company pays per 55 character VBC, so I checked to make sure it was the same.
Worked out to about 17% less for me than with spaces. nm - FBL

We should not accept jobs that do not pay for spaces we type - me
[ In Reply To ..]
We have to type that space, so why do they feel that they do not have to pay us for this? (1) Because they think they can get away with it. We should all stop accepting these types of jobs. (2) Numerous transcriptionists add spaces for line padding. It is amazing to see work turned in that when I put on the reveal codes, there are spaces everywhere, and I even read it on this board several times, although some type this without realizing it.
Personally, I would never accept VBC. I have to hit that spacebar just as I would any other key.

Isn't your #2 a pretty good reason for MTSOs to want to go to VBC? - nm

No it is not. Spaces get added inadvertently as well - FBL

especially on VR jobs and by proofers filling blanks. Software can remove or not count the extra spaces back end.

Line Rate For 65 Printable Character Line Jul 19, 2011When a company states a line rate for a "65 printable character line" does that mean they do not pay for spaces? I saw an ad saying they pay the highest in the business, which was about 8.5 cents for 65 printable character line. That to me says without spaces, as it is not a printable character, so that would be a horrible rate surely not one of the best in the business. Wonder why there is no respect for our thumbs !!!! ...

PT Line Rate Cut Nov 25, 2009I know a lot of us wonder what the reason is for PT status MTs to lose 1/2 cpl. We have been told that it is because at some point we could possibly switch to FT. If our bank, where we have our checking and savings accounts would send us a letter telling us that starting next month we would have to start paying $200 per month for our house payment, even though we do not own a house, but this was just in case some day we might, I think we would all tell that bank they were nuts ...
