We need to do a walk out. - SusieMT

Posted: Apr 16, 2013

I know we see these once in a while,  think we need to shake up things, maybe it will show we are fed up with how we have been treated, our livelihood dismantled, it will get attention. Not enough people in India to do it all! yet!  I think a Monday would be a good day.

You are not the first to suggest this - and it was not well-received in the past

either. There are just too many of us, both IC and employees, that are all over the US. There are those of us who cannot truly afford to take a day off to "make a statement" to any MTSO, and with long lines of already unemployed MTs, those who did walk out would soon be replaced by someone else more willing to accept the obscenities the MTSOs are expecting us to deal with these days, and get away with it for the exact reason. we NEED a job. A walk out would not affect them in the least....only us. Sorry. no go on this end.

What's to lose, at this point? MT isn't a job, - its a joke and a disgrace.

People walk out every day, nobody cares. - SMH

Veteran MTs get out of this business every day. More and more are going back to school or just taking whatever job they can find, to again have stability of a steady income. The problem is, new MTs are STILL continuously entering this field, even though it is a dying one. For every seasoned MT that walks out, a newbie will be jumping and willing to take that spot.

The ones of us who have been around a long time, it is hard for us to get used to the lower wages with all of the work we are expected to do. The newbies, well they are just tickled to have a job at home, to "raise their kids" or whatever and $8.00 per hour is just fine with them, beats McDonald's. I don't think the newbies have the stress that the more seasoned MTs have, because they are just not expected to know all of that and apparently "quality" isn't too much of a factor these days.

I'm booked solid Monday. You go, though. Been done, no one - noticed or cared then either.

idealists...bless their widdle hearts. How many walk outs before they realize this behavior does absolutely nothing?

Rude & condescending answer. - Tsk, tsk.

LOL, yes muuuther. but proven true. never worked before. - and my work picked up that day NM

Not rude, just realistic. These MTSOs have - Des

so many MTs waiting for any scrap of work, so many MTs who are desperate for anything, that even if half their workforce walked out, there'd still be plenty of MTs to do the work.

Furthermore, not all MTs are unhappy. It really sucks for some of us, but there really are those who have good clients, stable workflow, and reasonable pay (above 4 cpl for VR). Some of the MTs are MModal are getting 6 cpl for VR, for example.

MTSOs have us divided. Those who have it good would be foolish to rock the boat. Those of us who are suffering will have to either take what we get or move on to something else.

That just wouldn't work - sm

Maybe, if we all worked in the same building, for the same employer, then perhaps, but there would be no way to orchestrate something like this. First of all, not even a fraction of all of the MTs even visit this board. Secondly, I mean how would you even know how many would do it, like a show of hands, or what? What if everyone said, sure, let's do this tomorrow, then you are the only one that goes through with it?

Basically, to do this would be to lose your job for nothing and I am telling you, I NEED to work, so if you walk out on your job, I will be right there to apply and try to get it for myself. I'm not trying to be anybody's hero, just trying to pay my bills and make a living.

Not all of us are being treated poorly - though

[ In Reply To ..]
I have an in-house job, am paid hourly, and get to work from home. I know, I know... it may all end tomorrow and if it does I will be very sad. But for right now, I love my employer and they love me. I also have a part time gig with one of the smaller nationals and they treat me well, too.

I feel for the people who work for the big guys who are struggling. I've been there and done that and have the foreclosure lawsuit as a souvenier.

The only thing a walk out would do at this point is prove to the people at MModal and Nuance that they are right in sending even more work to India.

Even if we all work our rears off for these people, - in the end were gonna get - sm

crumpled up and throw away, anyway. Why not jump the gun a little bit and make it hurt them a little? If they lost even one client over it, it'd be good enough for me, and worth losing my [cough, choke] MT "job".

oh, so the cause is revenge and anger. You can react to your emotions - if you want but I cannot join that. SM

...and this profession has kicked my butt a few times too. The MTSOs may be behaving in an unprofessional manner, does not mean we all have to behave like that. Besides where would that get me? WILL IT BETTER MY PAY? DOES IT COMMAND RESPECT? Those are the things that would make ME feel better, not striking out to hurt back. Poster above is correct, they just snicker and send the work overseas, no loss of accounts to be had. loss of MTs? certainly, and 10 waiting per position. Been done more than once in the past without a hiccup. But you go...walk out if it'll make you feel queen for a day. I wish you well.

constructive or destructive personality? I know who I am. And it works for me.
I would not join that, either - Old Pro

Where is the concern for patient care in all of this?

Patient care? I know not what this patient care - is that you speak of

[ In Reply To ..]
Sadly, sometimes it seems like the MTs are the only ones who are concerned about patient care and the accuracy of the record. The Big Fat MTSO's certainly don't care and sometimes I'm not even sure the doctors care. They certainly don't look at the reports they get back.
thinking that way...why are you in this profession? - you must see it as just a job. NM

messed up by not voting in 2010, and these hateful, anti-christian law-makers got into office.

The work won't necessarily go to India. - Des

With all the NJA that so many MTs are getting, those who don't walk out will simply suddenly have enough work.

you're right, absolutely. without a hiccup-done. - NM

Are you freaking kidding me? - NOT AGAIN!!!

[ In Reply To ..]
No, we don't need to shake anything up AND if you walked out on your job you wouldn't be "shaking anything up". You'd be setting yourself up to be fired and your job to go to India or I'll take on your accounts seeing as you don't care about providing a service to them.

It must be nice that are rich enough that you don't need your job. I and others DO need our jobs. I can't just "walk out" because you are unhappy. Sorry sweetie "walking out" equals not working. Not working equals no pay. No pay equals can't pay my bills. Can't pay my bills equals no food on the table or foreclosure/evictions.

If you are so unhappy quit. Not everyone hates their job. I happen to love my job and my supervisors and the work that I do.

Besides, nobody cares whether or not we are happy at our jobs. I know a lot of people who would give anything to just have a job. What do you mean you think Monday would be a good day? For what everyone to walk out because you are not happy? Get real. No day is a good day

About To Walk
Jan 28, 2015

I am one of the few straight typing MTs left in the company.  I came on board 3 years ago as a result of an acquisition.  The new policies starting at the beginning of 2015 are making it nearly impossible to do my job, almost as if they are trying to force me out.  Seriously.  I am struggling like I never have, and I have been doing this job for more than 2 decades.  Now, we have been told we will also be required to work in Fluency.  Judging from the comments, this ...

Medquist - Just Walk Away
Mar 10, 2010

To all the wonderful MTs out there, just turn off those computers and walk away.  Try to find another job first though, but do it.  I did and I am cannot believe what better companies there are out there.  I did send my supervisor an e-mail that I couldn't take it any longer and quit that day.  I was sorry I did that.  I never heard back from her, all I got were shipping labels and an snotty phone call about returning the computer.  I did return it in my own sw ...

Walk A Mile In My NJA
Sep 17, 2011

Whether you are "making it" at MQ (and for the life of me I don't know how), that really isn't the issue.  MQ is treating his MTs like slaves and for a pittance.  They degrade you, monitor you, have supervisors who are tyrants, unnecessary meetings, more hoops than you can throw a stick at and guess what, they are going to send everything over to India.  There are not enough qualified MTs any longer to support these huge companies; just look at Spheris.  The higher ...

Do You Guys Cold Call/walk In To Offices For New Business?
May 01, 2013

I feel like I'm getting to the point where I can't rely on new business finding me.  I recently took over in the family business and have not yet just walked into offices to see if a doctor would like to switch transcription services. Have you guys done this?  What's your experience?  Who do you ask for? Thanks to all that reply. ...
