Unemployed? sm - oldtimer

Posted: Aug 05, 2011

I am just wondering how many unemployed MTs with up-to-date equipment are having a hard time finding clients/employment because the MTSOs looking for ICs are requiring Windows XP?  I had been working on my Vista computer for four years and now cannot find a client that does not require XP.  What's up with that?

Does NOT like change!!!

Not sure how long you've been in the business, but look how long it took to move away from Word Perfect!

My tech guys tell me keep my XPs in tip-top shape because all the programs are written around XP.

Look on Craigslist in your area; there are usually a lot of XPs refurbished for real cheap.

I am not unemployed right now, but I was browsing through some job ads on the job seeker's board here, and I saw some of them wanted XP. What is it with that? They should update their operating systems. I mean that's insane. They have had 2 operating systems since XP...let's get with the times companies. Windows 7 is out now and they haven't even updated to Vista! Crazy.

They WON'T update their operating system/software because... - Hayseed

That would cost money now, wouldn't it, and we all know this career is dying so why should they throw any money into it?

The problem is the client won't upgrade. - The MTSO usually uses what the client has.

If the MTSO has its own plaform, then many times they will purchase that from the MTSO, but not always.

There is a good reason for not updating to Vista. It is a piece of junk. As for good operating systems, XP is the best for interface with most other systems. I say, keep XP!

When I first got my computer I saw that all companies were asking for XP, so they gave me a Vista and downloaded XP onto it.

XP may very well be better than Vista... - anonymouse

XP may be better, but we can't go buy a new computer with XP on it. So if a person cannot buy a new computer but has to get a used one to accomodate these clients the MTSO has or the MTSO themselves, then they need to update and still use XP but also update where Vista will work too. I bought a used computer so I would have the XP I needed a years or so ago, and the computer was junk, not because XP is junk, XP is great, but the computer itself was junk. I got ripped off. I bought it from a computer repair place that sold refurbished XPs. Well this one was awful, and he wouldn't do anything about it but say it worked fine when he looked at it. So I said no more used computers for me.
Just install XP - Pxmt

You don't have to buy a whole computer just for the operating system. Just buy XP and install it if you don't want to/can't run it virtually on 7.
Dell sells new XP computers. You just have to ask. sm - MT2Long

They don't have them on their website, but if you call, they have them. I got a new one for $499 about 6 months ago.

I have my computers custom-designed and built, and I always specify that I want XP.
Hmm. I didn't know you could still order one with XP. - anonymouse

If you download Windows 7 Professional, it has an XP mode on there where you are able to use programs designated for XP!

17 years in this business - I have tested and tested and tested some more - I have been told that I have failed their test, passed their test with no further response, and told positions have already been filled, what is wrong with these companies and have I been blacklisted or something - I left a company in Oct, which was not a good company as I have read many discerning reports of this company - so what is one to do?  Down and out in Bama ...

Still Unemployed. Sm
Oct 11, 2010

I have now been collecting unemployment for 16 months.  I am lucky in that just last year I began collecting my Social Security.  Before being let go,  I thought I had it made, working 30-35 hours a week and also collecting SS.  I really miss my job!  Boo hoo!  I am at the point where I would almost work for nothing!  That being said, I do not even get a response when I submit my resume.  Is anyone else in my boat?  I am starting to think that I shoul ...

Now That I'm Unemployed.....

Getting paid piecemeal for typing medical reports is ludicrous! Getting paid minimum wage for typing medical reports is RIDICULOUS! Pressuring people to meet a certain quota and threatening them when they don't make that quota is BULLYING. Seems like nowadays it is all about the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR even with medical transcription! I used to take a lot of pride in my work. I even enjoyed the challenge of catching on to the difficult dictators! I never cherry picked....took the good with th ...
