Still unemployed. sm - anon old MT

Posted: Oct 11, 2010

I have now been collecting unemployment for 16 months.  I am lucky in that just last year I began collecting my Social Security.  Before being let go,  I thought I had it made, working 30-35 hours a week and also collecting SS.  I really miss my job!  Boo hoo!  I am at the point where I would almost work for nothing!  That being said, I do not even get a response when I submit my resume.  Is anyone else in my boat?  I am starting to think that I should not list all my years of experience.  This job has been my passion and now I am passionless and lost.

I don't list the timeframe I worked at companies - only the company name and what type of specialty it was. I summarize my experience by stating how many years I have total in the beginning of my resume, while introducing myself. Hopefully this may help you =)

What do you do with online job applications where - no. of yrs. worked is a required field?

(Or "date hired", "date left", etc.)

Sometimes I would rather not send my resume and all my personal info. until I even know if they'd be interested in me, and I had an idea what they paid.

Anyone have any luck just emailing them first with just SOME information, before doing the whole questionnaire-and-resume song and dance?

First of all, don't call yourself an old MT. I am a very experienced MT also, unemployed for the last year. I used to love this work too, then I was a QA editor for a number of years. Once I got to the top of my salary, they got rid of me....told several lies about me and accused me of doing substandard work, after giving them nearly 10 yrs of my best work. I'm very detail oriented and often cleaned up work that was awful before it could go to the client. The company didn't care who did the typing, much work was outsourced (and they were the worst) and then they hired newbies who turned in shabby work. What did they have to worry about, they had us "clean-up people" to make the work passable. My best advice to you is to remember how good this business used to be before the greedy med. transcription companies monopolized the market. Time was when you could open up the Sunday paper and find 20 or more MT jobs every week. Now you can't get a transcription job on your own, so you are forced to go through these companies who will give you the cream of the crap work and pay you so poorly, you'd be better off babysitting. Please, find a new line of work. Medical transcription is not what it used to be, and the only people it will ever be worthwhile for are the transcription companies and they scam everyone but good.

I am sure that you are doing all the right things, jobs are just scarce right now with a lot of competition. I seriously doubt if you experience is what is keeping you from getting hired. A suggestion that I could make is to have someone like a career counselor, HR specialist or former manager (if that is feasible) review your resume and perhaps make suggestions in regard to formatting and things you should include or leave out. I'm also an "old dog" and thought that my resume was good but found that it did need some revamping. There are even websites where you can get suggestions. I understand what you are saying about MT being your passion. I'm fortunate to still have a good job but I also started coding school. Even with my new skills I plan to transcribe/edit for as long as there is work for me to do. Anyway, good luck, hopefully something good will come your way soon.

I am on unemployment as well - it will be a year in December that I filed for partial and full unemployment in February of this year. Most local unemployment agencies have a Career Center - at least in Maine they do. They emphasized during my mandatory workshop at the beginning of receiving unemployment that if you need someone to look at your resume just go to the Career Center and someone can help you out as far as "revamping." At the workshop they also gave out literature on resumes and how to target specific job interests. If anyone needs help in this area and are on unemployment I would suggest contacting your local Career Center and utilize their servies since it is free and may be useful.

Unemployed And Do Not Know Why

17 years in this business - I have tested and tested and tested some more - I have been told that I have failed their test, passed their test with no further response, and told positions have already been filled, what is wrong with these companies and have I been blacklisted or something - I left a company in Oct, which was not a good company as I have read many discerning reports of this company - so what is one to do?  Down and out in Bama ...

Unemployed? Sm
Aug 05, 2011

I am just wondering how many unemployed MTs with up-to-date equipment are having a hard time finding clients/employment because the MTSOs looking for ICs are requiring Windows XP?  I had been working on my Vista computer for four years and now cannot find a client that does not require XP.  What's up with that? ...

Now That I'm Unemployed.....

Getting paid piecemeal for typing medical reports is ludicrous! Getting paid minimum wage for typing medical reports is RIDICULOUS! Pressuring people to meet a certain quota and threatening them when they don't make that quota is BULLYING. Seems like nowadays it is all about the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR even with medical transcription! I used to take a lot of pride in my work. I even enjoyed the challenge of catching on to the difficult dictators! I never cherry picked....took the good with th ...
