Think AHDI was money hungry before? Check this out. - sm

Posted: Dec 14, 2010

The new costs of credentials through AHDI.  Cost for RMT ranges from $100 to $230.  Cost for CMT ranges between $150 to $280...but here's the kicker.  Starting January 1st, the RMT credential will become a required prerequisite for access to the CMT.

Isn't this just grand?  Our line rates have almost been cut in half in the last 20 years and now they want to charge even MORE?  How has AHDI fought for our wages or done anything for our profession other than lining their own pockets by promoting offshoring?

Even if they gave the CMT for free, I still wouldn't - want it. I want nothing at all to do with AHDI.

I don't associate with dishonest people, and AHDI wrote the book.

What is scary is that it may be coming to that anyway. - sm

I think AHDI knows something we don't because it would be kind of stupid on their part to make it cost more money for CMT credentials when so many people already think it is a waste of time and money. If anything, better business sense would lower the prices as an incentive rather than scare off any new prospects by mandating staged testing at a greater cost. I think something is coming down the road.

They're in Washington, lobbying hard to make - THEIR credential "mandatory". -sm

Not "a" credential, but "THEIR" credential! Every dollar we give to those women goes to PROMOTE OFFSHORING, LOWER OUR PAY, and essentially FORCE MANY OF US OUT OF THE MT FIELD. It seems to me, that if it's considered unconstitutional to mandate buying health insurance, especially if it's a certain brand of insurance, then one company mandating a bogus "credential" such as the CMT (THEIR "product", not an A.M.A. or other medical credential) on MTs is just as unconstitutional. Especially if it puts MTs who choose not to be "certified", even though they are currently gainfully employed, out of a job! Even if their money talks in Washington, and they manage to $crew the American MT even worse then they already have, those with 20 or 30 years under their belts, who were probably expert MTs back when the women who formed AAMT/AHDI were in diapers, should be EXEMPT. They've already "paid their dues" through their longevity in the field.
For the life of me, I do not understand why they have not lowered - Pragmatist, CMT
[ In Reply To ..]
the cost to try to draw in a large population to represent. I have my CMT for a purely practical reason and will intend to keep it for now, but--huh?! RAISING the cost?! Making it harder? Aren't we spesh. For me, I'm sorry, but I didn't purchase a membership and have no say in what they do.

How can you maintain your continuing education credits/CMT credential without purchasing a membership in AHDI?
It was an arrangement between my company - and AHDI. Our AHDI chapter
[ In Reply To ..]
offers CU opportunities through my company e-mail address. It's a limited membership, and if I recall right I can't access the AHDI forum.
So the next big question is, did they raise the price - and the difficulty in INDIA? Betcha NOT!
[ In Reply To ..]
And the whole, continuing-to-pay to be-recertified year after year is another ripoff. Once an MT is on the job, it's almost impossible to keep on doing the job at all, let alone do it WELL, without continuing to learn every single day, ON THE JOB.

We don't need some third-party, fake "advocacy" organization to decide whether we can do our jobs properly or not. That's up to our employers, and ultimately, the doctors we transcribe for.

AHDI needs to be EXPOSED, and SHUT DOWN.
'Their' credential is the only one we have - Not a fan of AHDI
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not a fan of AHDI, but 'their' credential is the only one out there that is honored or respected by any employer. The school approval process failed because in my opinion at least they let anyone with money have their stamp of approval. The CMT may be the only legitimate thing they have going for them.

Most career fields have some kind of certification or registration. I think we will be better off if we have one as well. As far as your comment that it will "FORCE MANY OF US OUT OF THE MT FIELD", I believe that many MTs should not be transcribing because they don't have the necessary skills but don't know what they don't know.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Oh, and one more, I detest lobbyists, and when I look at AHDI, that's all I see. I believe that lobbyists and politicians who want to give our jobs away are destroying America. AHDI may feel that they have to lobby, but they aren't lobbying for MTs and sometimes lobby against us. For that reason, I don't like them very much, but I do like the idea of the CMT, because that's all we have to protect us, as little as it is.
If CMT had been the product of a LEGITIMATE - organization, then it might - sm

actually be worth the less-than-nothing that it is now.

Asking AHDI to "protect" the MT with their cash-cow "credential" is like asking the fox to guard the hen house.
Geez - wish I could think up an organization that would make people - Pay for MY credential to work.

What a scam. But then again AHDI and SCAM are synonymous....

Has anyone joined AHDI's facebook page and put your concerns on there and maybe try to get a response to any questions that are raised on this board as to why?

an AHDI Facebook page. I use FB mainly to just keep up with all my own circle of friends at a glance. I don't post anything personal on there at all. No way would I want AHDI to have access to anything about me. Not to mention adding another "friend" to their list of sheep.

Nothing but a pack of thieves - How do they sleep at night? Traitors!

May be a response to new grads taking CMT - Elias

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm thinking that maybe AHDI's making the RMT a prerequisite for the CMT may be in response to brand new graduates being advised to take the CMT shortly after graduation. Andrews was doing this for a while, although I do not know if Ms Andrews is still recommending that. I do know that a few fresh-out-of-school grads from Andrews did pass the CMT.

Because there was really no way to verify employment time requirements, the grads were skirting the work requirements and taking the test anyways on Andrews' advice.

Your information is incorrect. There are no employment time requirements - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I think any graduate who is ready to take a test should be free to take it, since the eligibility requirements don't say that they can't. Each person should be able to decide for themselves. AHDI gets to decide who is eligible to take the test. Whether you agree with their decision or not, it is the way it is. More power to anyone who is able to pass the test and/or wants to take it. Many of us question why anyone would want to take it, but if they do and they can pass it, good for them!

What I Want From AHDI
Jun 14, 2012

People ask me what I want from AHDI or if it's worth being a member. I am a member. I ask myself why I still pay my membership dues and what I hope to get in return for that money. That's a tough question. Years ago I learned from their journal. I met lots of great people at conventions and seminars. Then the journal and web site started being more promotional instead of educational or professional. There was always something new that was going to change our lives if we would just sig ...

AHDI BOS 3
Oct 10, 2014

I recently began a new position where they adhere to the AHDI Book of Style 3 guidelines.  Obviously, not having used this version before I was not aware one of the wonderful changes AHDI has made.  I understand AHDI exists to set the standards as one of their main objectives.  I also was under the assumption that AHDI had been made up primarily of MTs (at least that is who made them to start with) and has grown to include MTSOs.  What I find so infuriating and baffling at t ...

AHDI And RMT Exam
Dec 05, 2010

I will be graduating from TTC's Medical Transcription class soon so I am now wondering if I should join AHDI and if I should take the RMT.  I have read the information on the AHDI site which of course points to the pros of both. But I have also read posts from seasoned MTs who have not joined AHDI and some of them say that taking the RMT (or CMT for that matter) carries very little, if any, weight when locating a job. I know if you join AHDI while in school you get a discount on member ...

Goodbye, AHDI!
Jan 13, 2011

When I was a medical transcription student last winter at a local two-year college, most of us students joined AHDI at the encouragement of our instructors. I can't afford the membership because I can't get a job because AHDI supports offshoring of medical transcription jobs. Goodbye, AHDI. ...

Why Is AHDI A Scam, You Ask?
Aug 28, 2012

It was a get-rich scheme from the very beginning. Brilliant, really. Except that when they championed the offshoring of our work, and the lowering of our wages, they made it so that most MTs with anything between the ears but empty space would question the value of the BOS, the validity of the CMT, and the very existence of this so-called "for-the-MTs" organization. Speech Recognition Editing   Performing SRT editing successfully requires a somewhat more specialized skillset than that involved in traditional, manual transcription. There is a different eye/ear/brain coordination dynamic at work in SRT editing compared to transcribing, which often makes it more challenging to identify errors in an SRT-draft document. It is more common in SRT editing for the brain to be "tricked" into thinking that the eye has seen what the ear has heard, due to the lac ...
