The doctor states to the patient that carpal tunnel is not - a work related injury. Bull. SM

Posted: May 26, 2015

I would like to know exactly where else you would get it from when you're doing 8 hours a day, 5 days a week full-time job for one company for the past 20+ years.

No outside of work hobbies or activities to cause it according to patient.

This is workers comp law, according to the doctor.   I'm unsure if it's that particular state where the patient resides, but if I were working 40 hours a week at the same job for many years and develop carpal or anything similar, you better believe that's going to be classified as workers comp no matter if I have to fight it to the end of my days.

It isn't WC - sm

Been an MT 20+ years and have never had issues with CTS...guessing you are the patient or the "I have a friend who..."

If said patient is an MT, he/she needs to learn ergonomics.

As they say, an ounce of prevention...

CTS is NOT Work Comp - ime mt

The above poster is correct. Carpal tunnel syndrome is NOT considered work related. I work every day on IMEs for Work Comp cases and many of them are for carpal tunnel syndrome. Many of the doctors reference the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Disease and Injury Causation, second edition. There are specific job related activities that are related to CTS but keyboard work and mouse work are not part of them. You can try to make a claim if you felt you needed to but chances are it would be denied.

CTS - and WC

[ In Reply To ..]
well, I am old enough and have been doing this type of work long enough that I DO remember when CTS started to become more prevalent. At that time, it WAS regarded as or could be related to the worker's environment. The AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Disease and Injury, (do not know which edition, but since you stated the second, it was probably in the original) it was considered to be a possible (and you note I said possible) factor in acquiring the syndrome. It was only recently changed (by the insurance companies) to not be a factor when they (the insurance companies) started having to pay multiple claims for this disease. Then suddenly some study from somewhere (who knows where) determined it was not a work-related injury and thus denied every WC claim involving it. Anybody can make up a so-called document saying it is a legitimate "study" and declare anything they want saying it is fact, and the general public is expected to believe it. Oh, we who are so blind!!

No, sorry to burst your bubble; I am not the patient or a friend of. - I am glad you are not the decision maker SM

on anyone's workers comp or other type of case with your nasty snap judgment attitude.

I have known/worked with several MTs over the years who developed CT and had the surgery only to improve afterwards.

Learn ergnomics? Ergonomics was unheard of 10-20 some years ago, so that doesn't do any good back then. CT doesnt develop overnight, hotshot know-it-all.

Burst bubble - - hotshot know-it-all here

Re-read your post...and mine.

CTS in most cases develops from performing a repetitive job in the wrong manner, e.g., incorrectly positioning your wrists while typing.

Instead of ergonomics I suppose I could have been really ignorant and said he/she should have learned how to type correctly 10-20 years ago?

You seemed awfully indignant though to be simply transcribing a report for Patient John Doe. I guess I was on my jump to conclusions mat.

I would get a few more opinions. I think he's - not telling you the truth.

on the internet carries so much more weight than real information.

You "think" it's not true, but the law says otherwise.
