Retirement plus still typing PT - Pauline

Posted: Sep 19, 2011

MTs:  I presently work for an outsource company which has sold its MT division to another outsource company.

I will be 62 yo come January.  I am to the point now of seriously thinking about taking early retirement and only working PT 20 hours a week. If I do that I would actually be making more money that way than I would be working the 50+ hours a week I do now.   The thing that I am concerned about is I would have no health insurance unless I pay for it out of my own pocket which I have checked around and is high.

I am to the point of being burned out with transcription, but I still have to have money to survive.  If anyone knows of a halfway decent insurance please let me know.  I know I can retire and still work a certain $$$$$$ amount per year.

Are there any MTs out there that have done this?

Getting old and tired of learning new tricks

for 12 years, I worked for a medium sized company and was considered a statutory employee. TCompany was bought by one of the biggies about 1 1/2 years ago. The full time requirements to keep insurance was too much stress for me so I went part time, no benefits. Through all of this, I had BCBS Care First (individual)plan. Pretty good plan, started off those years ago with a reasonable monthly premium with a deductible I could handle. Each year, the premium went up. When my job became VR editing and my pay was cut, I could no longer afford that premium. I had to increase my deductible to decrease my premium. Basically, I have health insurance, but it really is only catastrophic now. My deductible is so high that I really can't afford to see a doctor. I guess it depends on what you can afford each month as far as premiums. Mine is now a little less than $100 a month with the above limitations. It is so aggravating that when I purchase it, it was a little over this amount with a low deductible. Good luck.

I live in Tenn. I did check 3 years ago with BCBS insurance in case I had to go to the hospital which they called catastrophic. I have to go to the doc about every 3 months for bp and cholesterol checks and that kind of insurance does not cover those unless I buy it. I have been offered a job at a company that you have to do a certain $$$$ amount or they put you at PT which bothers me. I know sometimes work can be low on all amounts so in that case surely they would not put MTs in PT category if there is not enough work to get that certain dollar amount per PP. This is the reason I was thinking about partial retirement and then do the 20 hours per week, but then I would have to buy medical/surgical insurance which would probably take most of my money. Knowing that you have to do a certain $$$$ amount and I do not get it then I am penalized is stressful just thinking about it. I am torn and do not know what to do.

Companies do put you on PT status even if - work availability is SM

is low and it is out of your control. I think this is shameful. This job is stressful enough now with VR pay cut, and I could not handle the extra stress of the insurance being held over my head. As I posted above, this is the reason I am a PT employee. I don't quite understand what Obamacare will do to help people like you and me, but possibly it might make getting decent coverage more affordable.

About Retirement: Don't Do It If You Don't Have To
Apr 03, 2015

I'm not saying to stay on at a horrible job that you hate. Do something else if you need to, but retirement is not always as great as we've always told it would be. When I look around me, I see all the retired people wishing they had something to do, somewhere to go, and a little bit of money to spend. Their brains don't get a very good workout.  Stay active! Don't retire unless you have to. ...

Transcription Vs Retirement
Nov 21, 2011

Has anyone faced this problem?  Worked at home many years in radiation oncology then because of by out from hospital I was transfered to medical transcription department for training. When I showed up for training I was told that they "didn't quite know what to do with me". Showed up for daily training only to be sent home because volume was low. Eventually, realized that they didn't want to train me so I decided to retire. Is there any recourse? ...

Early Retirement ?
Dec 17, 2012

Benefits And Retirement?
Oct 20, 2013

My minimal wage MT job is offering benefits and retirement account. Wouldn't getting benefits not to mention retirement account eat further into the small-sum paycheck I get now so that it's questionable whether I can pay for food or rent? The way they offer benefits, you think they pay a "normal" amount of money. By the way, is it required to enroll in healthcare benefits now that there's a new healthcare law? ...

Medical Transcription After Retirement
May 21, 2012

I transcribed for over 40 years, and when I do test now, I usually test up to 95%, and that is just not good enough even for a company I previously worked for that went outsourcing after freezing us out of work.  I really loved transcribing and would do it again in a heartbear if I could get a good, steady part-time source.  Any suggestions or recommendations?  Thank you.  I am in Glendale, AZ if that will help.  ...

Huge Numbers Of MTs Have Recently Hit Retirement Age

Typing Without QA
Apr 06, 2010

You know, I think I am typing better and faster without the fear of QA hanging over me.  I never thought they were extremely helpful anyways.  Usually they couldn't fill in the blanks and just nit-picked the report like a pecking bird.  I have never had a report sent back from a client (knock on wood) because they were unhappy with anything.  I spent far more time trying to please QA than the hospitals and doctors (and have told my supervisor that more than once).  ...

Typing Into EMR
Mar 20, 2012

For those of you who are typing directly into EMR/EHRs, how are you accessing the voice files? Is it coming directly from the EMRs or do you have to grab them separately. I've been asked to type directly into an office's EMR and am curious how this is going to work. It sounds like some are charging per audio minute and others per hour. I'm trying to keep my job relevant and go with the flow. Thanks to all who post their situations. At least we can all pull together, learn and keep ...

MQ Typing Versus ASR And Our Pay.
Oct 01, 2010

A very interesting post over in the VR forum which is proof IMO why we are going so broke doing ASR, and isn't even taking into account how horrible MQ DocQSpeech software is. Yesterday I had a 10-minute ASR report and I ended up typing at least 50% of it. Several times I thought of doing F11 on that report. Unfortunately, using F11 part way through a report while saving the text you have done so far on note pad, and then pasting it back in rather than starting all over, however, can ...

Missing HPs When Typing DSs?
Oct 02, 2010

Okay, I have had the suspicion that MQ programmed something when you bring up old reports when typing a discharge summary that the H&P doesn't show up.  Today, the dictator doing the DS plainly stated that she was reading right off the H&P.  I went to check in the old reports to maybe get some quick lines, but it wasn't there...as usual.  I typed what she said and realized that I had already typed this before and that I was the one that typed the original H&P ...
