Part time and saving for retirement - Raven

I'm thinking of going part time at my job so I can do something else on the side. However, I won't be able to have a 401K or PTO. I get medical and dental benefits through my husband's work, so that doesn't matter. For any part timers out there, what do you do to save for retirement?

I find now working at home so very, very easy. I think if a person has medical issues and has to work outside the home, then if they want to take retirement and an early one at that, then up to them. I personally wanted to get to full retirement and still work which I achieved this year. It is wonderful and I mean wonderful to double your money like this. I was not able to save in years past but through unforeseen happenings in my life, am ok on that end. Now in my older age I work part-time but not saving, not planning on retirement and hopefully will keep well enough to continue this typy-type thing.

I agree 100% with you. Though only 54, I am in a position where I could retire but I never intend to retire. I enjoy working. I had many years of raising kids and working and it is nice now to work and have nobody around and just fly through!

I think the younger ones are banking on the folks over 50 (and some think over 40) to retire, but I think they are going to be surprised. Most of us who have decent jobs and like our jobs have no intention of retiring. I know I dont. The way the MT field is going as far as quality goes, it may be that employers start looking for experienced folks again.

Ladies, while it's great you enjoy working and not retiring...you haven't answered Raven's question.

Raven, if you have a 401K where you work now, check with your advisor there. Check with your Human Resource person otherwise, and see if you can see contribute if you cut back your hours.

Does anyone care to share that if you are hired at optiscript part time will they let you change to full time easily? I know they are a small company and do not over hire so I do not know how easily this could be done. I'm considering dropping to part-time. I checked out the MQ Central for the specs and it indicates 24 hours/0.03 PTO per 48 hr pay period/1.37 hours for a max of 5 days/40 hours yearly. My CCM said if I happened to work 39 hours in a week, I'd get more PTO accumulated during that time. She said there are PT folks who get just as much PTO as the FT do. I was talking to my CCM last week and she said the facilities just let them know they do not need them anymore, just like that. They go with their own VR.
