Ready to quit, but need some opinions - Anon

Posted: Sep 22, 2014

I'm seriously ready to quit and get out of the MT business altogether and about 95% sure I have a new job lined up, but will not give notice until I'm 100% sure, BUT....as you all know, our cpl have gone down drastically since VR and most of us have had less and less work coming to us lately, so my question is would you still give a full 2 weeks notice? I always have in previous jobs, but my last paycheck was sooo small, I honestly don't feel I can afford to give 2 weeks and still pay my bills....and I'll admit, part of me is just soooo over it all, but it's honestly more about the money....don't think I can survive about another month that it will take to get a decent paycheck from my new job (if I get it!) and another 2 wks of this awful pay!

I would make the new job your first priority. - Do everything you can to land it. (sm)

It's your ticket off of the sinking MT ship. If that means starting immediately, and not giving much (or any) notice, then go for it. That's what I did, and I didn't regret it. Especially since the new paycheck was about 5-6 times more than the MTSO's was. When you see what's happening industry-wide, it's pretty much a given that MT as a profession is in its death throes. Too many MTs seem to be postponing the inevitable when they stick with their sweatshop at-home jobs. Maybe they think that's the easy path to follow, but I don't call chronic poverty to be an "easy path". The sooner you grab a job with a realistic, dependable paycheck, the better off you'll be. In probably a few short months, when MT finally runs its course, do you think these employers are going to give any notice whatsoever? Highly unlikely. They'll just lock you out and say "See ya!" I gave about 2 days' notice, but only because I landed the new job on a Friday, and started work on Monday.

I agree. Look out for number one. - see m

Under very different circumstances, it is simply ethical to give 2 weeks' notice to an employer. However, these are different circumstances, and you owe it to yourself to go for it. If I were you, when the new employer contacts you to offer you the job (fingers crossed), you tell them your work in your position is so low that you really do not need to give notice and that you can start right away! Actually, this is true. You are not going to be missed, they do not need notice since there is not enough work to go around anyway, and why sit there in front of the computer hours on end, waiting for work, and making little to no money. This is a job for goodness sake. That means a decent paycheck to most working Americans.

No mam, you owe them nothing at all. You do owe yourself. Go for it, and best of luck to you.

If you are offered the job and you say you want to start right away, I would think one would wonder about your giving notice to your employer. It may not be necessary at all, but if so, you need to know what you are going to say when they wonder why you can start right away and not in 2 weeks.

I would go for it. Worst that will happen with your current MT job is that you won't be eligible for re-hire. If that's okay with you (and it probably is!), then don't lose an opportunity that's non-MT.

If at all possible, I would also use up any PTO you have before telling your current company you are leaving. Could be risky in that they could withhold any outstanding PTO dollars.

Good luck! I got out 2 years ago.

Ready to Quit - Just do it!

You have to realize we don't have real jobs, otherwise they wouldn't treat us this way and if you found something better and hopefully get it, then just be gone. Tell them the truth, you found a better position that you are taking because of the money situation and now. Hit them where they live. You owe them nothing. Don't mess up a good thing by trying to be PC! Those days are so over with transcription. How many MTs turn on their computers only to find out they are locked out? Really, don't even consider it. Hope you get the job.

Go for it - Jennifer

I was recently in the same position you are in now. I could no longer work in a field where I never knew if I would be able to pay my bills. It's sad because I love transcription, but the last few years have been awful.

I was offered a position in medical records at a hospital. I took it immediately, and for the first time in my life I did not give a 2-week notice; I couldn't afford to.

I've been in my new job for about 3 months now, and I absolutely love it. I'm so relaxed and happy now. Should have done it sooner!

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the honest opinions! - Anon

Thank you all for your help. I think I will take your advice, esp. since everyone basically said the same thing! Now, I just hope I get the job and don't have to stay a while and start looking for a new job all over again; it hasn't been fun! Thx for the encouragement and well wishes!

2 weeks notice, not - Cindy

[ In Reply To ..]
I would tell them that you would like to give a 2 weeks' notice, but you obviously don't have enough work for me and I need to get paid for my next 2 weeks rather than donate my time for pennies. Maybe not in those exact words, but similar. I you have something that pays good take it and don't look back. If anything ever comes of it in the future you can say there was not enough work for me to make a decent check. Believe me in the future India can have all the work because we are all sick of it and there will be no American MTs left. I think that the only reason these companies are not giving the whole account to India is probably for tax purposes, probably get some kind of tax break or something for hiring Americans in the US.

Unfortunately, there will still be some US transcriptionist left, because some will stay until the very end (some who live in a rural area w/o many job opportunities, the ones who are married who don't really depend on a steady check, etc.) and for the poor new MTs who love the idea of working at home, or the MT who only wanted positive comments about transcription somewhere on this board.

Not all of us are "sick of it." I like the job, always have, although it can be very, very challenging, especially as a newbie working from home.

Why do you consider it "unfortunate" that there will always be US MTs? To me, that seems very fortunate. It is work generated in our country.

There are other jobs/professions that pay minimum wage and people are free to apply for them and they do. It's a big diverse country and there should be all kinds of jobs available for all kinds of people.

I'm really glad that this job exists for US MTs. If you don't want to be an MT, just move on. Why wish the worst for the rest of us?

To keep the conversation balanced, there is another side.

Sometimes I think many of the posts here are by trolls who don't do MT for a living, probably never did! I wonder about their motivation.

It's a good job that I believe a lot of people in the US would like to hold onto if possible.

Nothing wrong with having a supplement job.

So Ready To Quit.
May 24, 2012

At this point I'd make more money waiting tables even though I'm older.  It's crazy.  With the VR I'm working double the hours for half the pay.  Not to mention there are 3 new QA's on my accounts and each want things done differently. I'm so fed up.  This is all I know but figure if an old dog can learn new tricks........... ...

Ready To QUIT!
Sep 22, 2014

I've been an MT for a little over 6 years now, and I loved it up until a few months ago. I was making good money and enjoyed the account I was on. In June, the company I work for switched my accounts (after being on the one for 4-1/2 years). Now I'm making signifcantly less money and having to put in double the work. I can't even pay the bills anymore. I have decided to go back to college and get my health information technician degree, because it seems like transcription just isn ...

Ready To Run 2
Jul 08, 2011

I'm just scared to death of jumping from the frying pain into the fire.  I know there have to be better companies out there.  I work on 15+ accounts, make no money to speak of, my boss makes me feel guilty if I want 2 hours off, forgets to send me e-mails that she sends everyone else, changed my PTO after it was already approved, and I could go on.  Today may be notice day after 12 years with this company. ...

http://the99spring.com/ How exactly will you differentiate between staff who are legitimately sick and those who are not?  I can't wait for all the EEOC, wage, unemployment, etc., claims to start as well as the legal jeopardy that your company can and will face in the event of unlawful termination.  The legal clinics will be very busy.  You would be very surprised at the resources that exist for the poor. They just don't know about them. Yet that is. Oh what an ...

Ready To Say Enough Is Enough
Feb 04, 2013

I have done this for years now but have just almost reached the end of what I can take. I have fought retiring, wanted to continue on but I feel the work is just not worth the hassel anymore. We are held to an almost impossible level now, just us, not what kind of dictation is sent our way. Nothing is said to ask others to clean up their dictation to where it is halfway audible but let us have 1 word left off that is not even meaning to the context of the report and we are called on the carpet f ...

Been doing MT & QA for 30 years, since I was in high school!  Boy, how things have changed. Question For QA'ers...How Do You Know When You Are Ready??? Sm
Dec 15, 2009

I've got over 16 years of experience with both acute care and multispecialty clinic.  I'm tired of being insulted by being offered line rates that I would have starved on 10+ years ago.  I'm very interested in pursuing a QA position.  For those of you who have done or are doing QA, how did you know when you were qualified to handle it? I would appreciate any information or tips you would be willing to share.  Thanks! ...
