Radiology Copies - Horski

Posted: Feb 25, 2010

When typing a radiology report, do you send the results/report of a radiology exam to just the ordering provider or the ordering and the family provider?  I am trying to find out if there is an industry standard.  The hospital I work for is looking at discontinuing sending the family provider a copy.  Thank you!

We don't send copies at all within our clinic system, the reports are available to view on-line. The only time hard copies get sent is if the provider is out of town or outside our clinic network, it's all done electronically now. Our MTs don't see what happens to the reports after we transcribe them and the radiologist signs off on them. Industry standard? lol!

When it is an outside provider, are you sending it to the family or the ordering doctor?

Copies never, never go to the family without signed authorization (HIPAA rules). When I say an outside provider I mean someone in another town or one who is not one of our clinic providers.

If I am reading your question correctly you are not asking about sending a copy to the "family" (as in the patient) but rather sending a copy to the family provider/doctor as well as the ordering physician, if the doc ordering the study is "NOT" the family practitioner.

Everywhere I have worked, if they were still dealing with hard copies vs. electronic availablity to all docs, copies were sent to: The Radiology film jacket, The ordering physician, The patient's medical record and any other docs that the dictating physician stated "send a copy to Dr. XXXX". This was never our job as the transcriptionist, but was handled by the x-ray file room clerks.

Hope this answers your question. :)

never in my career sent copies to anyone sm - anon

just back to the radiologists for signing. any hard copies handled by department clerks, if/when deemed necessary.

This is exactly how it should be. MTs should - Kiki

not have to take the responsibility for sending cc's. Especially with these new HIPAA laws.

Never been instructed to send family a copy - RubySoho

Did Rad for 5+ years for 3 different facilities and never sent a copy of the report to the family. The patient may come to pick up their x-rays to take them to another physician, but I've never been asked to send a copy of a report, much less done so on a regular basis.

Is that a courtesy copy your company just routinely sends out to the family? IMHO, most lay people wouldn't understand any of the terminology or "lingo" anyway, so it would be useless to them unless someone translated it.

Seems they could save a lot of expense by discontinuing that practice unless for some inexplicable reason they've made it a procedure to do so.

Thank you very much everyone!! nm - Horski

There is no standard. It is whatever policy the - doctor/client has. NM

Keep everything, I would love to know if the TSMs are sending out generic explanations of the new policies that are given to them by the company or if they are their own interpretations. HIPAA - MTs Being Fired For Sending Wrong Carbon Copies
May 03, 2010

First of all, let me just say to the people who have already been fired for MISTAKENLY sending the wrong CC I am truly sorry to hear this My question is, is this a case of SEVERE OVERACTION by the MTSOs or is this the case now according to HIPAA? So are they saying that because a non-treating MD received a report and everyone in the office, wherever, "SAW" that report that it breaks the Privacy Rule and thus a breach? So there is no need for a warning to the MT who did that but just grounds ...

Radiology Pay?
Nov 11, 2009
