Opinions on ophthalmology transcription? - Really not liking this

Posted: Dec 13, 2010

I've been editing and transcribing an ophthalmology account for a month now. I find it very difficult with many abbreviations and tests.  I also find it really hard to find things on the Internet related to same, unlike with the other specialties with which I'm familiar.

Anyone else dislike ophthalmology as much as I do?

I absolutely detest ophthalmology. (sm) - EyeHater

I have been a MT for over 25 years and ophthalmology has always been the one specialty that I absolutely hate!!! Thankfully I have never had to edit it, it is bad enough typing it!! Good luck!

I 2nd that motion!! (sm) - OTE

I don't mind the small stuff like cataract surgeries. This is on my list with not doing dental surgical procedures as well.

All in favor? - AYE!

So it's settled... we are all boycotting ophthalmology? :)

Not an option for me, I transcribe what I am given to do, like it or not. Several years ago I wanted to learn ophthalmology transcription as I had never done it before and went to work for a small ophth group practice. I now do multispecialty MT somewhere else but it's all in a day's work. I actually find it kind of interesting, especially the op notes.

Ophthalmology reports for me are okay when I get a good dictator. A sloppy dictator can ruin it for you. Abbreviations should be thrown out of the practice of medicine. Too many sound alikes. If your dictator likes to abbreviate everything, you spend all your time looking things up that sound like B,C,D,E, or G P and T S and F. Disgusting. You cannot trust their spelling either. A Stedman's Ophthalmology book would help and be worth the investment if you are going to get a lot of ophthalmology dictations. I have a book for every specialty and have never used some of them because I don't get those dictations. A waste of my money. Check with your MTSO and see if you are going to get a good supply of these dictations or just overflow of some doctor nobody at the facility wants to transcribe for. I had an ESL who liked to say hypa for everything whether it be hypo or hyper. ah U for OU or AU, take a guess. Disgusting.

Thank you! - Really not like this

Some specialties I've loved immediately or within a couple of weeks, but I just don't foresee liking this specialty lol. I'm grateful to have work, but glad I'm not alone in my dislike of this specialty! Thanks everyone :D.

Very difficult at first but very repetitive. Lots of money - to be made with eye stuff. nm

ophth - loved it too

I loved it, I used to do ophthalmology pathology and worked for a very particular doc for the service I worked for. It was great. Have you asked for samples. Then you can make some normals of your own, or keep a log of the new abbreviations you are getting. Do you use the abbreviations website to help out? Anything in particular you are looking for? I could help.

I don't like this specialty either, for some reason, and I've been a multispecialty MT for about 32 years. But one thing I have discovered, nothing replaces good old-fashioned reference books for specialty dictation as they are almost always correct and consistent, unlike the Internet. I use "Stedman's Ophthalmology Words" as well as almost all the books for all the other specialties I tackle on a daily basis.
