Need help with bacteria - Karie

Posted: Nov 25, 2011

I am confused on when to capitalize bacteria and when not to.  Like the word bacillus. When it stands alone should it be capitalized?  Should pseudomonas be capitalized when it stands alone?  Other bacteria words are lactobacillus, group D enterococcus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococcus aureus.  Anyone who can help me figure out if these words should be capitalized or not I would sure appreciate the help.

I have a little cheat sheet - Serious

I have a little cheat sheet that I was given sometime when I was at MTEC:

*Use capital letters for the genus but not the species.
*If the genus is dictated as an abbreviation, it should be transcribed as dictated.
*It is recommended by AHDI and AMA that the period after the genus abbreviation be omitted (although my account does not do this).
*Do not abbreviate a genus name when a full species name is dictated.
Genus names are not capitalized when used in adjectival and plural forms.
*Terms using the suffixes -osis and -iasis are not capitalized.

Hope this helps you!

Thanks - Karie
