Looking to get back into MT??? - bsygrl

I worked in medical transcription for about 3 years, but it has been about 3 years since I have done it. I really need to get back into it due to the fact my family needs the extra income. I cannot work outside the home because my daughter has special needs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

.......for almost 20 years and was able to make a decent living and support myself. Then the transcription department at the hospital disappeared mostly because radiology, which was about 40-50% of our workload, went to VR. That hospital now no longer has a transcription department, it is all outsourced. Unfortunately, I now find myself in a job where I don't even make minimum wage, and am having to dip into my retirment account just to pay my bills(I'm not old enough to retire yet!). I am afraid that the field I once was so secure in has gone by the wayside. If you read around on this board, (and yes, there is a lot of negativity on this board), you will find there are a lot of unhappy transcriptionists who thought they were set for life a few years ago only to now have their jobs going overseas or over to VR, and the ones that remain don't pay nearly enough!

All in all, it's your decision...but I would not advise ANYBODY to get into medical transcription these days!

I left MT totally after 15 years of doing it. Just want to advise you that a lot of the work is being offshored to India, and whatever work you do get, is ASR and pays diddly, mostly on account of the extreme editing you have to do. It's not really even editing, it's re-vamping entire blocks of transcription, and most of the time it's faster to just type the darn thing, but you're not allowed.

Be warned that you may have days where you have no work at all, and you don't necessarily have any warning. They try to play up the holidays as an excuse---Christmas is good for about 3 weeks. Thanksgiving they milk at 2 weeks for as an excuse. Anytime there's a Monday-type holiday, they squeeze out at least 4 days for one of those as an excuse for no work.

JUNE - "Graduation, weddings, beginning of summer".

JULY - "4th of July, middle of summer".

AUGUST - "Summer vacations, end of summer, Burning Man festival".

SEPTEMBER - "Back to school, Labor Day, hurricane season".

NOVEMBER - "Thanksgiving, Black Friday".

Arbor Day, Flag Day. Heck, if there can be a Groundhog day, we may as well throw in Frog Day and Porcupine Day. If you're in FL, we could even eek out an Armadillo Day.

For at-home work, taking in laundry or stuffing - envelopes would pay better than MT.

Hello, I would like to transcribe from home again. However, I HAVE to get up and walk for a few minutes at least once an hour. You see, I had to have 2 back surgeries in the last 18 months. I've been a transcriptionist for many years and this is my profession. Does anyone have a suggestion what to tell these companies that will hire you to work from home when you have to get up so much? Oh dear, here it goes again. ...NJA and a whole week to go on this pay period. Due to my sickness I had to take off my 3a-5a shift, but now cannot get work to make up. I long ago used up all my PTO. I quit last July because they couldn't keep me "transcriptioning," sent my resignation to my supervisor, and then received a letter in October stating that I was terminated. Loved it! And I'm thinking of reapplying. Ought to be an interesting experience.. lol.. just love it! I don't have anything else to do, and what other company would let you not work for 3 months before they terminated you? Did I mention how much I love this ...

Thanks so much for any advice! I am newly divorced and working at a call center, and I have an MT certificate from Everett Community College, and even though I have lost 1/2 of my stuff thanks to my ex, I seem to have held on to my foot pedal, software, and that is about it. I would like to start over and try to find an MT job. I had an excellent GPA in school but have never worked. I graduated in 2007. Am I crazy to try? I figure it is now or never, anyway. If someone here is optimistic enough ...

ok so after 13 years, having to resort to food stamps and borrowing money to make my rent, I leave MM approx 2-1/2 months ago to to type for 2 docs and 2 PAs in a private practice at $15/hr, no weekends, no holidays, beautiful office building, 1 hour lunch...and I get a call asking if I would consider coming back to MM ... AND I wouldn't even have to test for them!. ha....ha ha....ha ha ha....ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ...

I have now been doing EditScript for a month now and my lines are still horrific. I've read the manual over and over and still have the below questions. Being an MT is not paying my bills. I am thinking about going back to school, but I am 40 and it has been so long since I was in high school. I have to google to help my son with his 4th grade homework let alone do college math. AND it will be 2 to 4 years before I will get a good job. I am leaning towards radiology tech, lab tech, or maybe nursing. Can't decide just yet but I know that EMR isn't going to be taking those jobs away!!! Any advice ...
