My experience as an MT is not typical. I have always worked in private practice and did not go to school for this. I don't know anything about voice recognition or working as a contractor. Still, if my experience can help you, I'm happy to share.
I'm sure there are other MTs here that can provide more pertinent advice than I can!
I found my first MT position as a part-time position, and then found another part-time position, enabling me to fill up my time. Both of these were in-office. Paid hourly. No benefits.
I ended up with two full-time offers and picked one.
After several years I relocated and found another private-practice position.
If I can help, let me know!

for starters I would like someone to look over my resume. I have read it over hundreds of times but I know if I overlooked just one error, I won't even be considered.
I need help preparing for tests, making sure I have the necessary reference materials, ANY advice I can get would be great. I am a newbie who has been trying to find a job for too long now. I'm even considering taking a course that offers job placement. I graduated from a local college with MT knowledge, but absolutely no preparation for the job search.
I am a sharp learner, so for the things I don't know, I will catch on fast. Unfortunately, these companies don't seem to care how fast you catch on, they just want you to already know and have the experience to prove it. I just can't seem to get my foot in the door. I need HELP!

I've seen them posted on the job boards here and elsewhere. No luck there?

Mentor Needed Feb 23, 2011I am an MT student of At-Home Professions with a course completion of 76%, and have landed a temporary job with my primary care physician. The job entails transcribing 2,000 patient files for her clients as she closes her practice. I have been told the files will be relatively simple. However, being less than a Newbie I feel I need support and have been told mentoring is a standard practice in the medical transcription profession.

Oh Goodie, I Got An Email Stating I Have A Mentor For ASR. Apr 11, 2012ie, the shadow mentoring. They say their methods have been effective in increasing ASR production. We will see... The one good thing is they will get to see exactly how much I have to correct their ASR! It might be more educational for them than me. :) I use all the short cuts provided, but I do listen to every single word. ...
Hey Shaw, Guess What My Mentor Said After Shadowing Me? Sep 17, 2013She said, "retype more". She had nothing else to say after watching me work.
I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts, but I can still mouse faster. The secret to being fast on the mouse is learning to use it on the left side of the keyboard so you don't have to reach back and forth past the number pad. It's only mere inches when it is on the left side. I have never found a way to Ctl Alt I with all my fingers on the keys.
Again Shaw, spend a day (or better yet, a week) in our sho ...
