Epic is being installed in my hospital/employer - FormerMeridianer

Posted: Jun 17, 2013

They're starting in Ambulatory care this summer, getting it up and running and anticipate 2 years later the whole hospital will have it up and running.

I pretty much anticipate a complete loss of employment.  Can anyone else who had Epic come in tell me what happened and how soon after ?  I'm just tired of being bought out everywhere by MedQuist, twice now I've run from them, but this time when the rug is pulled out from under me, i just want to be prepared.

our hospital has had EPIC for 1 year now. We haven't lost any transcriptionists in my dept. (radiology transcription for 2 hospitals, 2 imaging centers, multiple clinics and physician's offices). We have 10 radiologists and out of those, only 3-4 self-edit on a regular basis. The rest send everything to the transcriptionist to be edited, which often takes longer than if you transcribed it from dictation. As long as you have physicians who are not willing to take the time to "read it slowly and correctly" the first time, believe me, you will have a job.

EPIC wormed its way into my hospital and it took 18 months until I had no work. Good luck to you. My best advice is to start making other plans now. Me, I am leaving the MT profession altogether and becoming a paralegal. I'm tired of all of this bouncing around.

I lost my job in November at a local hospital because of Epic. Ambulatory came in July and then at the end of October the rest of the hospital and the first week in November I lost my job. We saw it literally overnight. It all depends on how the physicians are required to use it or if they use it. We were told "oh we wont be requiring the docs to use it, so we will be just fine". Hahaha, apparently they were trained really well!!! All the work that does come through are OPs and just a few STAT type situations. The department is about to shut down completely it sounds, they are down to 10 MTs, cant see why they would keep them with all the managers and payroll people just for such small work. I have a feeling for even service jobs it will be down to OPs within a few years. I typed directly into Epic when it was just ambulatory and they do make it pretty nice for these docs to use smart text and set up their own macros so with some reports they can just as easily do the report themselves as dictate it, esp psych reports because they were always 15+ minutes. Sorry but be prepared. Currently every hospital in my city is on Epic and only one (the one I worked for) still has a department.

We are up on Epic on ambulatory, haven't even gotten to inpatient yet (that comes later), and our manager told us flat out there are going to be layoffs. Within weeks of flipping the switch and getting the initial kinks worked out, people were running out of work. It is scary, and it happens faster than we thought. We are trying to learn as much as we can about Epic so that we might transition over to the Epic/IT sides of things, but for sure two people out of an already-lean department will be losing their jobs pretty soon.

Epic - My experience

I work in ambulatory care, we've had Epic for 2 years. Our workload decreased but then picked back up, quite a few of the providers still dictate. We all got laid off anyway as they outsource all the work now, which probably would have happened anyway. If you are on site, chances are you will get an Epic/IT related job (some of us did) but it is definitely a good idea to learn all you can about the system while there is still time.

I've see it go both ways - I lost a job to Epic - but work with an Epic system now

I hope to hell I'm not jinxing myself with this...

Anyhoo, I got laid off a couple of years ago from Execuscribe because the huge account they hired me for went to an Epic-based platform. That was a blessing in disguise since they sold out to Medquist not long after that.

I work for my local hospital system now which is ambulatory clinics, urgent cares, and 7 hospitals statewide. The ambulatory just finished going live with Epic about 3 months ago (after a year-long implementation) and we have more work than ever. The first of the hospitals (one of the smaller ones)went live last week and we actually picked up 2 dictators who did not dictate before.

It all depends on your hospital and how they are implementing the program. Do you trust your boss to be honest with you? That's an important factor.

If they are just now starting the process, I'd say you for sure would have until the end of the year before anything drastic happens, but again, communication is the key and you have to make sure those lines stay open.

Good luck. The uncertainty is a hard thing to live with.

Took me quite awhile to figure this out. You need 2 MT jobs because they all overhire to keep many more employees less busy to pay less. In my day, you kept your 2nd job quiet, but what is the way to do it now? Is it good or bad to be looking for a 2nd part-time job, do you tell them. Is there anyone who left the first job to go full time with the 2nd one or switched them? And is it better to go IC in the 2nd job because of flexibility? I sound pretty dumb! ...

This story has been popping up in the news lately, and I find it very distressing!  How low will a company stoop to find a way to practice hiring discrimination?  Imagine yourself interviewing in an office or on the phone, and they ask if you use Facebook, Twitter, etc., and request you to hand over your password!  Would you do it?  I sure hope not!  Most likely I would lose my cool and laugh in their faces, but still no way would I ever do that.  WHAT an invasion ...

My Job Is Phasing Out And My Employer Is Blaming
Sep 19, 2013

I work as an IC for a multispeciality clinic.  To make a long story short, she told us on the 1st the physicians are only allowed about 2000 lines a month and after that they will be charged. They are pushing the physicians to use an automated system.   She says that will decrease our workload significantly and she strongly urges us to pursue over avenues for employment.  I have not done hospital transcription since 2008.  I talked to my friend who works for a local ...
