Commute time - mtneedajob

Posted: Sep 23, 2014

Any MTs commute to work for 1 hour? I'm in desperate need of work and this is the only thing I have found closest to me in the transcription world. It would be an in-house position, competetive salary, and excellent benefits.

Wondering if it would be worth the drive. As I said, desperate for work.

Any thoughts?

It may beat the hour it takes me to get - to get motivated to go downstairs!

But, really, if it pays well, you think it is a good group of people, some security (if even MT disappears which is what everybody will talk about with the outsourcing issue), at least you will be in the hospital setting and maybe find something else, if you had to?

My thoughts: - in-house, competitive pay,

[ In Reply To ..]
and excellent benefits = I would go for it! Like the other poster said, you would have your foot in the door for another position if the MT job went south. Plus you may be able to find someone close to you & share a ride. Good luck to you!

Is it in a hospital? - see msg

I guess you'd have to do the math with gas and clothing (unless you get to wear scrubs!).

Also, if it's in a hospital, that is a plus, because if they are shutting down a department, they often offer other positions to people who are already employees, before they go outside to look for help.

I would also consider that a lot of hospitals are outsourcing to transcription companies and you may be right back where you started. Another consideration? Well, not sure what competitive means. In the transcription world, 4 cpl for ASR is competitive, but it doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

I think you answered your own question when you said - you are desperate for work

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, even for an hour commute I think it would be worth it, especially when you talk about competitive salary and excellent benefits.

As others have mentioned, even if the MT department goes south, you at least have an in with the organization to hopefully be placed elsewhere.

Go for it and good luck and I hope it works out really well for you.

job - mtneedajob

The job description stated for a busy surgical center. It has many doctors. The local hospital has already outsourced some work. They let go about 20 people in the HIM department. They are now hiring scribes for the ER department for $8.00-$12.00/hr. I find it so sad that most of my former coworkers are now gone and moved on to greener pastures.

Back to the job...It would cost me $100.00 a week in gas and make the time 10 hours a day, 8 for working and 2 hours of driving.

I've applied and interviewed for so many healthcare jobs and yet no luck saying, I landed one yet. I'm just ready to work again. Being jobless has caused so many problems in my marriage and stress on my family. I've tried temp agencies and everything to find work.

I was commuting about 1 to 1.5 hrs. to work - each way last year. (S/M)

[ In Reply To ..]
I was able to do it because the pay was very good - $24/hr - so it covered my gas and auto maintenance.

The size of the paycheck alone kept me very motivated! It was just so much easier to have enough money to pay the bills each month.

I dealt with the time spent in the car by leaving as early as possible. Sometimes there was a 5 min. difference, when getting on the freeway, whether the traffic would be moving or not. It also allowed me to not get upset whenever traffic was at a standstill because I knew I had plenty of time. Also, where I worked they were flexible; if I got to work 15 min. early I could leave 15 min. early.

Luckily the corridor I drove had a really good local small radio station that I looked forward to tuning into each morning and evening. Instead of eating breakfast at home, I ate in the car. Whenever traffic slowed or stopped, that was when I could take a croissant or fruit out of my cooler, or safely take another sip of my coffee.

The other thing that helps is to take notice of places you might want to stop or go shopping on the way home. There were better stores in the town I work in than I had at home. Sometimes I would bring my bike in the back of my car, and during the longer days of summer I would stop at a favorite park along the route home that adjoined a scenic, shady bike path. Stress-reduction, exercise, and traffic-avoidance, all rolled into one!

Unfortunately that job came to an end when there were layoffs at that hospital. However, if I can find another job that pays as well, and will cover the commute costs, then yes - I'll do it again without hesitation.

It just depends - sm

I live in a rural area & used to drive 45-50 minutes to the nearest city to work at a hospital. Then I was fortunate to work from home for that hospital for many years. After getting laid off, I decided my priorities were a M-F job, close by, no holidays, no evenings. I was fortunate & got a job in the nearest little town. It takes me 11-13 minutes to get work, & I live close enough to come home for lunch everyday. The pay is okay, but the benefits are almost nonexistent. This works for me because I hate being stuck in traffic.

I commute - in house working

[ In Reply To ..]
40 min for my part time in house job. I'd say it's worth it. I'm paid hourly a decent wage in a nice working environment with nice people and get yearly raises. What's not to like? With a car that is good on gas I don't mind. Of course I'd rather work at home, who wouldn't, but this is what I have and I'm glad to have it. They even offer me more hours when they have a lot of work or are short staffed.

I would in a New York minute! You get face time with the docs which I think makes them more responsible for their dictation, yearly raise, appreciation be in the form of parties, etc.

Let me add also, during the time you are working there rub shoulders with other departments and maybe take training courses in other parts of the medical field that you could transfer to, because I truly believe in the not so far off feature, there will be little to no transcription jobs left, or at least not ones anyone will want.

Time Versus Money - Long Commute
Aug 01, 2012

I am doing some thinking about what is important to me. I have been looking at jobs on Indeed.com and found 2 coding jobs that I might qualify for down the line, but they both involve a 1-1/2 hour commute via public transportation each way. So that's 3 hours a day getting there and back. After working at home more than 10 years, that idea seems very daunting to me. I could look for work closer to home, but the pay would be considerably less doing outpatient coding for a dr's office ...

Trying To Find Part-time Or Full-time Employee Position (hospital/clinic)
Apr 30, 2013

If anyone knows of a hospital, clinic, or large practice offering remote full-time or part-time employee positions, I would really appreciate an email.  I have the sudden need to help support a family member long term (in addition to myself) and really need to find a long-term remote employee position for the stability.  Yes, I watch all the various employment sites and even individual hospital sites, but I was hoping that maybe, just maybe someone who works for a hospital that does th ...

Overtime Because Of The Time Clock Time Zone Change?
Feb 06, 2011

It has been inconvenient, and maybe a bit confusing at times, to check my time card hours for my shift as, because of my time zone, part of my hours show up on the next day because I work 2nd shift. I wonder if I will get overtime for yesterday, even though I did not work overtime. I had to start work several hours early because of maintenance, so all hours were completed before the hour my hours start showing up on the next day. Fine. But the last couple hours of yesterday show up as today, ...

Anybody Else's Actual Time Worked Not Match Clocked Time?
Jun 13, 2011

Ever since they have changed Schedule Source and now it has a display called today's activity with "actuals" hours, this has not matched the hours shown with the time clock punches and is less than the hours according to the clock punch. The difference adds up to a significant amount over time. I am really suspicious about being jypped paywise. ...

MQ Rehire Policy For Part Time To Full Time
Apr 09, 2011

I worked for MQ full time and then went to part time last year, before finally quitting altogether because of health problems. I seem to remember an obscure policy that if you were full time and then went to part time, you could not go back to full time for a period of at least 1 year.  Can anyone verify that for me? IF, and this is a big IF, I were to go back to work for MQ, I would need to be full time. ...

Optiscript Part Time To Full Time
Nov 19, 2011

Does anyone care to share that if you are hired at optiscript part time will they let you change to full time easily? I know they are a small company and do not over hire so I do not know how easily this could be done.  I am thinking of cutting down to part time at my current employee so I can work part time elsewhere and eventually just leave my current employee once I see how the land lays elsewhere.  Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated :) ...

Change From Full- Time To Part- Time.
Sep 10, 2012

I am still debating whether to enroll at Andrews or M-TEC.  My husband is retiring in 2 years and I want to be able to work part-time after that.  Is it realistic to think that I can complete the course at Andrews or M-TEC in 12 months at the most, work full time for a year and then part-time after that.  I would want to be able to work from home.  I guess the other question is "How long after graduating could I expect to earn enough to make it worth the investment, in a reas ...
