To the new coders having trouble finding a job (see msg) - coding student

Have you networked with your local AAPC chapter? If you took the AAPC course, did you also take the Practi-code to remove the apprentice designation from your title? Doing so is the equivalent of one year of coding experience. Also, are you networking with any groups elsewhere like LinkedIn?

I'm currently an AAPC coding student online, and currently still working as an MT.

I was hired at the 2nd job I applied for! I am sure your location and amount of clinics/hospitals/private practices nearby affect this, so I am not putting down those who have been unsuccessful. I also had a "coach" helping me with interview techniques, body language, etc. Most jobs will talk with you as well as give you a test, both of these are important. But, I got the lead through networking in the AAPC. Good luck.

That does not work for everyone. Where I live, there is no AAPC chapter. The coders schedule programs on site which qualify as chapter meetings, but they are closed to the public and no notices are sent outside of our facility. Networking is no guarantee of landing a job.

That doesn't make sense. It is either a chapter or it is not. You can't have chapter meetings without a chapter, so I don't know what you mean.

I don't know how you determined the meetings are "closed to the public," either. Chapter activities are generally NOT open to the public. They aregenerally not announced widely. You have to JOIN and that is part of networking. You can attend, I think, 3 meetings without joining.

If you live in an area so small that it has no chapter, you might want to think twice about going into coding, because that can be a clue there are no jobs.

No, networking is not a guarantee of getting a job, but it can darn sure help. If someone needs a job, then they need to do what it takes to get one ... not sit around moaning about how the jobs aren't coming to them.

I have been transcribing for 31 years. Hospital laid us off in 2008, went with our contract provider, then Nuance took over her employees. I have been looking for a job for over a year and finally found one.
