Suggestions for finding IC jobs - Ka

Posted: Jan 01, 2010

I am moving to a very very large city in March and was thinking about soliciting dr's offices for independent contracting jobs for medical transcription.  I've been employed by nationals for the past 11 years and earlier worked for a couple dr's offices independently, but got word of them through the hospital I worked at.  Can anyone advise me the best way to approach a dr's office for transcription?  I'm thinking about trying to pick some up and do the work at home if I can find it, whether that will be tapes or whatever way they would like to do it, but how do you explain that to them.  Can you email me some ideas on how to get this started?  I've got 16 years experience with MTing, editing, auditing and QAing, its just that I dont have experience soliciting for work from office to office.  Thanks for your help!  Happy New Years to all.

I guess nobody knows how to solicit a physician for work, that on this board, that is why they are complaining about the transcription companies instead of finding a physician to transcribe for themselves.

I would have the same questions as I have worked for 25 years - Olive

for a medical facility and never was an independent contractor. There is a book which I have known about, never read or even saw in person, and just looked up on Amazon and surprisingly has been revised. The original book is from 1997 which would be so obsolete today but the new version is from 2008. It is called the The Independent Medical Transcriptionist, Fifth Edition: The Comprehensive Guidebook for Career Success in a Medical Transcription Business (Paperback). Check it out on Amazon. The customer reviews seem glowing. You'll see it isn't a cheap paperback but might be very worth it. Things you would never have thought about. If you were solicting business in your home town you could visit doctors you know but since you are moving and know no one, this book might be helpful to you. Good luck.

Great information, thanks - Ka

I looked in the Yellow Pages and made a list of doctors within walking distance of my home or on a bus line. I mailed the doctors my resume and a cover letter. I got several responses. It took awhile before I heard from anybody, and the jobs I got were only part-time. Your results might be better than mine.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

I went on several appointments in about a 2-3 week span, actually had the same amount of doctor offices asking about whether I would do work for them, just by their reading what I did for a living on the papers you fill out. I was not looking for a job, probably why I was offered some.

Just my opinion - flyingfingers

Probably not what you want to hear but I think most practices are switching over EMRs and pretty much eliminating the need for MTs. You might have some luck contacting some of the specialists in your area though who will send a letter to the referring physicians. I have done hospital work for years, along with working as an IC for 4 different specialties. The IC work is really drying up. The older docs still like to use MTs but the newer docs are used to just adding their patient info into the chart via the computer. If you are trying to find accounts, I would suggest calling your "target" practices and getting the name of the office manager. Send a letter directly to that person and follow up with a phone call. Good luck.
Thanks everyone I got ideas from every post so far and I appreciate your help! - Ka

MT Jobs Suggestions
Dec 31, 2012

After reading what was suggested to the last person who asked for advice about going into the MT field, I don't want to get run over by asking about that. I am sure just like with most anything there is both good and bad to the whole industry. I am looking at doing MT part time if possible certainly full time if there is a company who offers those type of hours. At this point I am just being open and flexible to reading all I can find and looking into a few companies that I have seen listed ...

Just Another Vent About Jobs, No Jobs, Requirement Of Jobs, Etc.
Aug 18, 2010

It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment.  If an employer can PROMISE IN ...

Finding Another Job Vent
Oct 31, 2009

I need to find a new job.  The company I'm working for is replacing med transcriptionists with voice recognition and electronic health records.  This is not the first time this has happened either, . . it happened at another hospital I worked for.  The company's response was "you can go work for the service."  Yeah, right, at half the pay.  After working at a good in-house hospital job for nine years, I realize how home MTs are so mistreated.  And, ...

Is Age A Factor In Not Finding An MT Job?
Mar 31, 2014

Have any of you had a hard time finding work as an MT because of age discrimination?  I have run into this for the very first time this year.  I have not worked for a few months because they laid off a lot of MTs at the company I worked for; mainly because they promised something they could not give.  We would have 4 or 5 accounts and no work on almost all of them.  We would be left scrambling for work and got the worst work possible.  The supervisor at night watched the ...
