Coders find jobs by:

Networking with other coders and local members professional organizations. A lot of jobs are filled through personal referrals.

Job listings on websites of professional organizations.

Advertisements in professional journals.

Local facility (hospitals, large clinics, ambulatory surgery centers) human resources websites.

When you are looking and talking to people about jobs, try to avoid using the term "at-home." It sounds raises suspicions of pajama-wearing. We usually use the terms "off-site" and "remote." "Virtual employee" is quite the thing right now. With those terms, no one really knows where you're working.

There is a post on the Job-Seeker's Board for a "medical assistant/data abstractor." That would be a good entry-level job for a new coder, particularly one with transcription experience. Take this job to GET the experience no matter what they're paying--the experience is by far the most important thing here.

This job appears to have nothing to do with medical assisting, so I don't know why they called it that (Maybe they're hoping to attract medical assistants? Why would they think MAs were coders??), but the abstracting part is correct. It appears that you would be reading medical records to find certain information that needed to be entered in an EMR, like demographics and diagnoses, then finding the ICD-9-CM codes to go with those diagnoses.

You might emphasize that your extensive transcription experience in a variety of record formats and your experience working remotely is a significant advantage for this position. One requirement was familiarity with EHRs, and you should have no problem with that with your MT experience. You are MORE familiar with report content than any other type of applicant and this far outweighs any advantage someone could claim from just looking at things in an EHR.

I would love to get the point of view of others on this topic. I've been watching coders for years, our graduates and others. There's been a growing trend for the hospitalists to dictate absolutely HUGE, long H&Ps/discharges ... including every stinkin' lab test and diagnostic procedure the patient has had for the last decade, it seems. I'll start off with some office supply suggestions. Code books have really thin pages, and really teeny writing, so you will want to highlight a FEW choice items. This has to be done *modestly* without ruining them. Regular highlighters will bleed through. Too much highlighting and note-writing will ruin them. They are usually trained to do only one particular type of report, not everything, and so they are not really trained as MTs. Can coding for institutions be broken down like that? I had a friend who worked as a coder at a local hospital. All she was given to do was outpatient ERs, and the "real" coders did all the inpatient work. We are being QA'ed into oblivion at our facility. We have our RAC audits, our internal QA, and an outside agency that does QA audits on each coder. We are constantly in a QA cycle for someone, and it is getting to be so tiring.
