Keystrokes: Is it more straight transcribing or more speech editing? - thinking about it

Keystrokes - VR

I applied there a while back and they were very nice and I was really considering it, until I was informed and I am thankful they were honest, that it is mostly VR and ESLs. I did not take the job. If you apply and are accepted, just be sure to speak up and ask them questions before you make up your mind.

I work for them and I do straight typing. No VR at all.

Not sure who you talked to, but they misinformed you. Only 10-15% of KS's work is VR. sm - KS Trainer

There are a few HIM and ortho accounts that 100% VR and a few radiology accounts that are VR, but most are still straight typing.

The percentage of ESL docs also varies, depending on the account. Many accounts have very few, if any, ESL doctors. Other accounts have 80% ESL doctors. It depends on the account and where the hospital or clinic is located. Some areas of the country have higher concentration of ESL doctors than others (think Florida vs Iowa).

That's good to know. Perhaps I will check them out again. Maybe the accounts you referred to are the ones she was telling me about. I really did want to go to work for them, but with that said about the VR and ESLs, I just couldn't. I have tried and tried those kinds of jobs and hate them and it never works out for me and sooooo time consuming.

Are Any Of You Transcribing Straight Into EMR?
Dec 29, 2010

I was wondering if any of you are transcribing straight into EMR and if you are, how does that work? How different is it to standard MT? Do you use it in conjunction with VR? Do you work for a large or small hospital, clinic, or physician's office? Specialty? Anything else I forgot to ask?  LOL ...

Pay For Editing Vs. Transcribing
Jan 27, 2012

Hey guys I was just mulling over the fact that editing accrues 1/2 that of transcribing, yet it tends to be as difficult if not moreso depending on the butchering job it does to the dictation (heavens forbid they have a thick accent. then it truly only stands in the way of progress...)... both I & my mother are MTs & just kind of wondering- does anyone else think this is fair? Is there literally anything fair about this? I mean, even the base rates for transcribing aren't mucho buen ...

I Really Miss Straight Transcribing - Hate VR
Jan 28, 2011

I have my first job ever with VR and absolutely hate it; I hardly make any money at it; get tired of constantly changing he to she, adding commas where the machine left them out; I feel like my talent of being a fast typist is being wasted.  I might type 2-3 reports a night and of course they are always the shortest reports of the night! I am so glad I was in transcription at its heyday but those days are long gone as is my love and enthusiasm for this career that I have dedicated 38 years ...

Getting Tired Of Transcribing/editing
Mar 20, 2012

I've been doing this now for only 5 years.  The first 3 years I worked for the same company and then they were bought out.  I went to work for another company and they were bought out.  Now I'm working for Transcend and they are being bought out.  I need a new career, I just don't know what.  I've always worked in the medical field, but I'm getting tired of it.  <sigh> ...

Speech Editing.
Oct 15, 2009

My quality has gone down since the clinic that I work at started this.   We use Dictaphone Extext.  Anyway, I must be going too fast or something because I seem to miss things.  Has anyone else had this problem?  I have started reading over my reports myself now before sending them through and I asked my supe if they have improved.  She said yes, but I still am making mistakes and she will send me my reports back shortly.  The only thing else I know t ...

Speech Recognition Vs. Straight Typing?
Oct 07, 2012

Ok everyone, need some advice please.  At my old company I was straight typing and doing probably 1800 lines daily.  I go do a new company and speech rec is all they have with probably 1% straight typing.  I've been losing on the average of $600 per pay period as a result of speech rec.  How the heck can I get back the money I was making doing straight typing? ...

Speech Recognition Editing Course
Aug 01, 2010

I graduated in May from the MT program at a local two-year college and, naturally, it's nearly impossible to find a medical transcription job as a newbie. Since speech recognition seems to be the future, I was wondering if taking a speech recognition editing course would be a good investment of my time and money. AHDI, I know, is offering a speech recognition editing course. I've done a lot of copy editing in my previous clerical jobs. I've always been good at copy edit ...

Speech And Editing Errors
Dec 19, 2010

working as a coder, I read all the reports.  It always amazes me what goes through.  today I coded an MRI that had the indication "Left upper Germany tingling!"  It should have been left upper extremity.  This is the stuff that doesn't get caught when editing, and it goes into the patient chart.  Once some doc, who didn't bother to look at it, signs it, it can't be changed easliy.  In fact, it is a major issue to try to change something once the ...

CJ, Regarding The Speech And Editing Errors...
Dec 29, 2010

Maybe what you are seeing is already the result of many people like yourself who have already left the field for the same reason you did.  When you get the responsible, diligent workers leaving because the pay has been cut so drastically they can't afford to work anymore, the field becomes saturated with new or substandard workers.  If you're already seeing these errors a lot, imagine how much more there will be when more MTs leave.  Who will be left to do the editing th ...

Tricks To Faster Speech Recognition Editing?
Aug 14, 2011

I have been straight transcribing for many moons. Then got into doing QA and a lot of the reports I get are straight editing of speech recognition rather than doing QA. My production stinks when I do straight editing and have no idea how those of you that edit speech recognition all day make a living. Kudos to YOU! I am one of the probably few QA who really appreciates you MT's who make our jobs easier and do AMAZING jobs transcribing what I can't even QA. Thank you for your hard work ...

Transcribing With VR
Feb 29, 2012

This might be considered controversial, but has any MT out there used a VR program to "transcribe" dictation instead of actually using a keyboard to transcribe?  So I am not misunderstood, I'll be very literal here:  As the MT, you listen to the dictation and instead of typing it out, you speak what you are hearing into a VR program on your computer to produce the "transcribed" report.  I can't be the only one out here who has thought of this and the only reason I can co ...

Transcribing
Apr 21, 2015

I'm sorry, I need to blow off some steam and perhaps those who have their own accounts could shed some light.  I have been an MT for a very long time and in the past, what an MT did was TRANSCRIBE.  We didn't follow account specs or change sentences, etc.  Why has the MT industry come to this and why do the MTSO owners agree to this?  I don't mind at all fixing broken English, because I understand that process, but changing what a doctor says, because it's ...
