It is no different than having additional education/certification as you might have in some other field, stating that you have put in more time and are further education in your field.
Those that carry this certification get a higher pay rate than those without.
There is also a CET certification, which I am currently working on, which is also a step above and helps get you to the next level (AAERT) if you choose that route. This level also opens up the higher paying legal jobs.
It all depends on what you want in this feild and how far you want to go.
