A lot of MTs are crossing over into transcribing depositions and other legal proceedings. You do not have to be AAERT certified to do this type of work; however, the formatting and terminology is different but can be learned. You can look up on Google, when case law is mentioned to get the correct formatting, as well as other legal terminology. Usually, a court reporter will send you their "preference page" as to how they want the depo/hearing formatted as well as how they want their parentheticals set up (when exhibits are introduced, a break is taken, witness nods head affirmatively, etc.). It seems to me requiring AAERT certification to do scoping/legal work is another way to get money out of already underpaid medical and legal transcriptionists who are struggling to survive (similar to requiring CMT certification to be an MT).
