I've been doing medical transcription since 1997. I currently have a somewhat decent IC job doing straight typing clinic work for a few local clinics (it keeps the bills paid and a roof over my head); however, the writing is on the wall. The older doctors are retiring and the newer ones are doing their own (or using SR or even AI now). I figure another 2 years and it's going to be gone. We are just not appreciated the way we used to be. I look at the medical records the doctors do themselves (or their scribes or SR or AI), and it makes me cringe!
I know, I came back to this site after years away and was shocked at how little is posted on here anymore. I'm happy to hear you found a job away from MT though! I'm putting feelers out for a full-time job outside of the MT world myself (with benefits would be nice as I haven't had a job with any sort of benefits since 2006)!! It's bittersweet as I love transcription, but I do believe the career is dying and soon to be dead. ***sigh***
I wish I could help you on supplemental job leads! I would check your local job listings. There are still some small clinics who do appreciate us, though they are few and far between and will likely also be obsolete in a few years. Very sad!
