Need help with podiatry wording - cjt140

Needing help with a podiatry word. The doctor is dictating a bunionectomy and wondering if I should type -first metatarsal or 1st metatarsal. I thought 1st, since it is a digit, but now wondering. 

Anyone familiar with podiatry, which is the correct way to type this.
