Lawyer - Jellybean

So I'm just wondering, do you have to pay the lawyer only if you win the case or do you pay the lawyer anyway for his or her time? (I've read a couple of commenters on this forum talking about their lawyers which leave me wondering if they're actually paying out of pocket. I mean, if so, it seems to me that the lawyer is possibly more costly than the severance pay.) Of course, the issue is also not ALL about the money per se but also a matter of principle--Scruance having no principles--the principle of standing up for oneself and even harassing the Scruance motherf&*%*@$.
