sig for medication dosing - mtks

Posted: Dec 03, 2009

When a doctor uses sig for medication dosing do I write as s.i.g. since this is Latin? Has anyone heard of not using periods for Latin words? I received something back from my quality once that changed n.p.o. to NPO. Thought BOS states to use periods for Latin words? Any thoughts?

I figured it out. It is short for signa or signetur, no periods because it is 1 word.

Stands for Signa, always expand as sig is one of those dangerous abbreviations!

I think it would be sig:

âSigâ is short for the Latin word signetur or "let it be labeled."

It wouldn't be s.i.g. since it isn't 3 words that are being abbreviated here but just one.

Other Latin abbreviations have periods in them, like b.i.d. (bis in die), because they are abbreviating the first letter of each word. I use periods for Latin abbreviations. I believe this is what BOS says.

SIG - spitfire

Hi all,I've been told in the past that sig actually translates literally as "directions". That is the new, liberal interpretation of the abbreviation. So, it would be transcribed as "sig tid", etc, etc, etc.

Oops, boy was I wrong on my reply to you. Was standing in my kitchen just a few minutes ago and realized what I had posted. Literal interpretation of SIG is "dispense" as in #30, #60. So, would be written sig. #30, 1 daily x5 days, etc. Am sorry about that. Was at the end of my day and my mind is pretty much pudding :)
