Curet vs. curette - SM for sentence - Thanks!

Posted: Jan 28, 2015

Doctor dictates, "I used a curet to curette the medial calcar of the femur."

My first instinct is how I typed it above, but I'm just not sure.  Curet to curette or curette to curet or curet to curet...

I'm so confused!

Thanks!

Curette to curette - sm - AnonQC

cu·rette
noun
a surgical instrument used to remove material by a scraping action, especially from the uterus.

verb
clean or scrape with a curette.

curet now seems to be an acceptable variant to curette, well according to Stedman's anyway. So in the case where the spelling 'curet' is used, is the verb form also curet? I know my SR platform pulls in the spelling curet and I used to change it to curette; but it seems everyone else left it as curet, so I just leave it as is now. But that's another story. What are your thoughts?

That's what I was thinking. I used to use curette - SM

but was told that curet was preferred. So I started using curet. However, the act of using a curet is called curetting and there is no other way to spell it. So wouldn't it stand to reason that the OP's sentence would be correct with "I used the curet to curette..." At the very least, it signifies the difference between the noun and the verb.

JMO, but since the BOS is pretty much a bunch of old MT's opinions written down and called "rules," why can't I make up my own?
Like in swim to swimming you double the - IMANMT2

consonant before adding the suffix ing. Makes curet curetting but I use curette and not curet.
Ooh, that's a great explanation...SM - Old Anon

The original sentence in the OP's post was sort of problematic to begin with. Was it something like, I used a curet to curette..... ? He could have phrased it more clearly and avoided the double use of curet/curette.

I honestly have never used (or seen) the word curet in a report, but if curet is a noun and a verb and curette is a noun and a verb, in the OP's sentence you'd have to stick to one spelling (used a curet to curet or curette to curette).

As an aside, it really makes me wonder though if curet is so acceptable now because it's a shorter word character-wise.
