REALLY??? next sentence - meMT

Posted: Nov 18, 2011

ok, so I had a 20-minute dictation by a DOCTOR, albeit a resident, but still...he actually said "next sentence" at the end of EVERY SENTENCE.  I just want to type verbatim for ONE DAY...

I just had a specialist tell me that CHF and COPD were supposed to be in all caps. You don't say.... However, he didn't specify about BPH. I wonder if he wanted that in lowercase.

Used to have one MD - s/m

who said "par, par" at the end of every sentence (read: period). Darned VR typed some version of it nearly every time. Godspeed to us all. ;)

I get those too - ERMT

"Purd, paragraph" after literally every sentence. I think he is just thinking and trying to fill in the air. I have another one that as he is rifling through the papers will say "dictating, dictating, dictating." No, you are not!

I remember when I got my first ESL that dictated "full stop." I had no idea what she was talking about. Makes me laugh now.

I think that "dictating, dictating..." goes back to the days when if there was too much silence in between words, they would get cut off. We're more sophisticated now, and they don't get cut off so fast anymore. I used to have one who would just keep saying "paragraph, paragraph" while he ws thinking.
singing, no less - very old mT

Have one doc who sings 'doo, doo, bah-bah-bah, la-de-da' while he looks up items from the chart.

Also hate the docs to say 'period, paragraph' after every sentence.

... a pet phrase or repeated word, because our old system was one of those that did cut off dictation if nothing was said for a while. Even though we don't have that system any longer they still do it, it's an entrenched habit by now.

So we have the podiatrist who uses "at the current time" so much that it shows up at the beginning, middle and end of a sentence, and also throws in a "it should be stated that" for good measure ... the cardiologist who repeats the last two words of a previous sentence over and over until he thinks of what to say next ... and the hospitalist who must think he's dictating an old-fashioned telegram, saying "full stop" to end every sentence. When we get VR, I can't wait (ha) to see the mess it makes of these.

I've been transcribing the podiatrist verbatim for quite a while now, because it's impossible to tell which "at the current time" is actually pertinent and which is just time-filler. I suppose I'm also hoping (dream on, I know) that he'll actually see how stupid it sounds. Either he doesn't see his reports, or he doesn't care, because nobody's ever told me to stop the verbatim transcription. But I figure if I have to listen to it ad nauseum, I might as well get paid for it.
