CHEST X-RAY VIEWS - PH

Posted: Feb 11, 2013

Is it PA, lateral, and upright views of the chest

or

PA lateral and upright views of the chest?

Where do the commas actually go?

three views: PA, lateral, and upright - nm

Chest x-ray views....sm - MT

PA means an x-ray from posterior to anterior (back to front). AP would be anterior to posterior or front to back. Lateral is from the side. Upright is standing. So...3 views. PA, lateral and upright. :)

actually, its 2 views, a pa upright and a lateral upright, - pa/lateral are views, uprightis position. NM

easy to remember - see inside

PA is shooting the ray through a person from back to front.

AP is shooting the ray through a person from front to back.

Lateral is through the side.

Upright is not laying down.

First 3 separate entities, but all are done with patient upright or supine.

The typical two view chest report would begin as: PA and lateral upright views of the chest show .......

CHEST VIEWS - PH

I just get confused when at the beginning he dictates "Chest, two views" and then dictates "AP lateral and upright views of the chest"

so is it two views (AP lateral and upright)

or is it three views (AP, lateral, and upright)

That is confusing...sm - MT

Maybe what the doc is actually saying is "AP, lateral in upright views...instead of and upright views. Doctors aren't always careful about what and how they dictate

it would have helped if you told us that at the beginning - nm

To the original poster. It appears that you have changed one of the views to AP.
It would be very unlikely that an AP upright view of the chest with a lateral would ever be ordered together(anterior-posterior/back to front and then a side view). Usually when an AP view of the chest is ordered it is in the ER or in ICU when the patient is lying down on his/her back and unable to stand for a standard two view chest or a single upright PA view of the chest. If this is a standard two view x-ray of the chest my original answer is correct.
Examples of typical chest x-ray orders:
1. PA and lateral upright views of the chest.
2. AP portable view of the chest.
3. Single PA upright view of the chest.
4. PA and lateral upright views of the chest to include right/left lateral decubitus views.
5. Many radiologists do not even dictate upright in the above examples as upright is assumed.
Hope this helps.

Radiology: Copella Or Capella Views?
Jul 22, 2012

A radiologist dictated "copella view" (pelvis) and spelled it as such.  (We all know how helpful that is.)  I cannot find documentation in my Stedman's or on line, except for a NIH website that mentions "Capella views" for a presurgical hip arthroplasty evaluation. Does anyone know which (if either) is correct?  Any supporting documentation? Thanks!  ...

Can Clubbing And Cyanosis Be In The Chest?
Jun 07, 2012

I've been an MT for 14 years and never once heard of clubbing and cyosis in the lungs.  In the exam he says - The lung fields are well expanded and clear to percussion and auscultation.  There is no clubbing or cyanosis.
