Transcribing with VR - anon

Posted: Feb 29, 2012

This might be considered controversial, but has any MT out there used a VR program to "transcribe" dictation instead of actually using a keyboard to transcribe?  So I am not misunderstood, I'll be very literal here:  As the MT, you listen to the dictation and instead of typing it out, you speak what you are hearing into a VR program on your computer to produce the "transcribed" report.  I can't be the only one out here who has thought of this and the only reason I can come up with why I haven't heard or read anything about it, is possibly the MTSOs have put in some sort of safeguard or block so this cannot be done.  Admittedly, the initial  monetary outlay would be considerable for the program and the learning curve for the program to learn your voice, but in the long run, I think one would "clean up" in terms of produced lines that one wouldn't be able to accomplish by "old fashioned typing".   There is though that caveat about the MTSO guarding against such ingenuity, but I'd just like to throw this out there to see what bounces back.

from one MT to another - I think

It's always easier and faster to just type the report yourself unless you have carpal tunnel or something interfering with your speed.

Seems like it would be more trouble than its worth and in the end, you still would have to do some editing. I dont think VR software can ever be perfected. But that's just my opinion, could be wrong.

VR to VR - sm

This is already done at the sweat shops in India. They listen to the docs, talk to the computer and it goes from one VR to another VR into a finalized document. The thing with this is that we as MLS are more geared to look at a report and is it being VRed and edit it, whereas the doctor not so much. I have seen some really bad reports come from the doctors (hospital administration instance on not having editing) who edit their own reports. Their eye does not even look at squiggly red lined misspelled words. I always pick up my medical records and look them over carefully. If I find out a clinic or hospital that I may go to outsources to India or are doctor corrected reports I do not go this this establishment. I have seen several mistakes on my reports. One of these days I just might have a lawsuit.

I have but not with a company that has VSR in place - sick and tired

Although, I dont see what difference it would make, just erase and move through..Dragon speak works 1000 times better then MModals VSR ever did...Now that you mention it, maybe I will go back to it..

I tried Dragon on straight transcription and got fed up - with it. sm

It would never remember my voice from one day to the next. I never could train the thing. The first day I used it, it was great, but days after it got worse and worse at hearing my voice and correctly putting in what I said. There are people out there who do use it in this manner and they have posted about it on these boards. I just got as frustrated with trying to train the Dragon as I have with doing VR when I have done it. My expansion keys and normals were faster, so just went back to them and took the Dragon off my computer. It also made my computer run slower when it was up.

Transcribing
Apr 21, 2015

I'm sorry, I need to blow off some steam and perhaps those who have their own accounts could shed some light.  I have been an MT for a very long time and in the past, what an MT did was TRANSCRIBE.  We didn't follow account specs or change sentences, etc.  Why has the MT industry come to this and why do the MTSO owners agree to this?  I don't mind at all fixing broken English, because I understand that process, but changing what a doctor says, because it's ...

Transcribing An Interview
Jul 14, 2010

I am doing some side work transcribing a research interview, and was wondering your opinions.  One of the respondents in the interview panel is ESL.  Her grammar is very often incorrect.  I asked them when I got the project if they wanted the transcription verbatim, and she said "yes, let's leave it true to form."  I had asked because the previous work had a lot of "like" and "you know" in it, and transcribing every utterance was actually really hard.  ...

Pay For Editing Vs. Transcribing
Jan 27, 2012

Hey guys I was just mulling over the fact that editing accrues 1/2 that of transcribing, yet it tends to be as difficult if not moreso depending on the butchering job it does to the dictation (heavens forbid they have a thick accent. then it truly only stands in the way of progress...)... both I & my mother are MTs & just kind of wondering- does anyone else think this is fair? Is there literally anything fair about this? I mean, even the base rates for transcribing aren't mucho buen ...
