Looking for input on hand position while editing - just wondering

Posted: Jun 26, 2013

in DQS while listening to audio and following along, where are your hands? Do you keep them on the keyboard? On specific editing keys? or on the mouse, etc?

Trying to figure out how I can reduce hand fatigue and I'm wondering what you all do while editing reports.

I keep right hand on arrow keys and left hand on - ctrl, alt and shift keys

And my wrists are crazy sore after an 8 hour shift.

Thats how I've always done editing and have the same pain problem - didnt have pain with straight typing

I don't know if there is a good alternative to the arrow keys/ctrl+alt cursor following along with the audio.

I went to see an orthopedic doctor because of an injury I had to my right pinky finger (not work related) and told him with the editing we are now doing the problems I am having with my hands with them cramping up, etc. Told him I call it "keyboard aerobics." Sometimes my hands will just spasm. No I didn't have this problem either with just straight typing!

LOL The answer to less hand and arm fatigue is better ASR! - LOLing so I do not cry

I mostly use my mouse on the LEFT side of the keyboard. I'm not left handed, but reaching around the number pad led to excruciating shoulder pain.

Last night, I didn't think I was going make it through the last 2 hours because I had had to make so many corrections and my right arm and Ctl Alt Shift fingers were so sore. ASR was particularly bad.

There are tenkeyless keyboards that might allow you to put - the mouse back on the right.

That is, if you don't use the number pad for anything (which I don't) and you'd prefer the mouse back on the right.  I use tenkeyless.

Keep my right hand on the mouse and follow along with audio. sm - mtwith6yearstogo

I think I've developed de Quervain's. My hand is so sore after working. I never had this problem with straight typing.

What I do - see msg pls

I rest my left hand (pinky side down), with my left thumb on the ctrl key and my pointer on the shift key. My right hand does all the arrowing for highlighting text. It's extremely comfortable and I have a lot fewer stress issues on my body.

One way to avoid hand fatigue is to use an expander. See link below.

Can I Get Some Input On PTO Please.
Jul 11, 2011

We only have 3.?? hours every pay period of PTO until after 4 years with the company.  I was off last week and for each day for PTO I indicated 7 hours per day.  This will give me 1 extra day of PTO over the year at 7 hours pay.  I do not know if that is allowed, they may require us to indicate 8 if we took the whole day off.  Will see what happens about that.  I wish I could put 6 hours per day, leaving me more hours of PTO. We have 2 days paid sick time, which I have ...

Thanks For The Input
Jan 11, 2012

I am very happy to have found this forum. I thank you all for the input on companies. I worked for a company for three years and was frustrated to the point of going nuts. I broke three keyboards and threw books at the wall. I had never experienced this when I worked directly for a practice and had to leave there too. I messed up my left wrist trying to make the lines they expected and took 10-12 a day since their platform was so very slow. I ended up taking a medical month leave of absen ...

Need Some Advice And Input...
Jun 22, 2010

I recently started working PT for a company.   So far, everything has been great with them.  Great work to do, good line counts, pay is on time every time and accurate.  However, something in the back of my mind keeps bugging me.  They didn't ask me to fill out a W-9 form.  Is this normal for PT IC work?  I mentioned it to them and didn't get a reply back about it.    Perhaps, I'm just being paranoid, but I'd like to know your th ...

Input Wanted From My Fellow MQ'rs
Jun 10, 2010

I'm totally getting burned out at MQ.  If it's not the NJA with requests to change schedule, then it's the lack of primary and getting other unknown accounts slowing me down.  I've gone from full-time at MQ down to working part-time with another part-time job to make up lost income now for the past 7 months.  When I started MT'ing so many years ago, the pay was great and being able to set my own schedule was a real plus as well.  It was the ...

Why Isn't ASR Programmed To Input Dates
Nov 10, 2010

I am doing a lot of cancer clinic notes today (very long reports).  They all have lots of dates in them due to the various tests and treatments the patients have had. This particular facility wants the dates typed out in XX/XX/XXXX fashion; however ASR types them out the long way, i.e., August 26, 2010, so I have to change them all to fit the client profile. It's rather annoying.  I figured that ASR was supposed to be formatted to be in line with the different client profiles. ...

Kinda Upset, Would Like Input
Mar 25, 2012

I've been working in an office for only about 3 months now after about 12 years in-home transcription.  It's a busy office for a doctor who is kind of a "superstar" in his field and I love it.  Here's the thing...  it's a new practice, the entire staff has been here for less than a year and we don't all have hardly any PTO saved up (less than a year and all...) and the doc is going to be closing up the office for 2 weeks to go on vacation.  Several of ...
