Minimum Wage Boost - Meh

Did you know that minimum wage will be raised from $8.00 to $9.00 next month, at least in California? So I wonder what that means for Nuance. Does that mean that the minimum line per hour will now be mmore than the current minimum of 186 lines/hour to meet minimum wage without having the company pay MUP or make-up pay? Or does that mean that they will give employees a raise and leave required lines at minimum of 186 lines? I wonder.

If your minimum wage is $9, do the math and be ready to do that number of lines. Wondering if you will get a raise? Don't think that is likely. The 186 lines/hour doesn't mean a lot unless you live in a state with a really low minimum wage. For example, if your state's minimum wage is $4, you don't have to do that many lines to make that, but you are required to do the 186 an hour minimum.

I've always wondered why 186 lines/hour times 3 and 3/4 pennies only totals about $7.00. Yet, minimum wage in CA is $8.00. Is it because Nuance takes the lowest-paying minimum wage state in calculating how many lines minimum is required? And if so, then a state like Washington or Oregon where minimum wage is almost $10.00/hour would still require just 186 lines/hour and yet pay would be higher? Then maybe the 186 lines minimum won't change, even with a raise in minimum wage.

And what if the MT lives in Seattle, where it's - now $15/hr min. wage?

They can't fire just because minimum wage goes up, can they? In any case, 240 lines/hour is equivalent to $9.00. It's hard to get even that amount of lines with all the additional things they make you do, such as filling in MRN if speaker leaves it out and then pending and adding pend comment for other stuff that speaker gets wrong and that you question. They can't fire just because they are required by law to pay more. Will sue. Then again, maybe California employees should look for another job that pays more.

They don't like to fire people. They would rather nitpick you to death with FIESA and let you leave in frustration all of your own accord because you really cannot earn a decent living, or they will just not send you any work anymore. Either way, they avoid lawsuits but you are still SOL.

Am with MM and live in CA. Got my first QA at 97%. It's too much to fight. You will never succeed on QA with terrible ESL dictators. I do the best I can with the crap I get, but no longer. Bye bye bye.

paid less than minimum CA wage for years. It took me close to 5 years to finally find a better-paying job inhouse. It was good while it lasted, but then we were all laid off. I've been looking for non-MT work all year now, but the competition is so fierce out here for anything that even comes close to paying a living wage, that a senior ex-MT stands little to no chance of landing one.

Contrary to popular belief, it's not all sunshine & roses out here in the "Golden State". You have to really love it here and want to stay, to put up with how freaking hard it is to live here. And state-discriminatory employers are making it even harder.

As long as you are on MUP, you cost the company - not make money for it.

If you continue pay period after pay period being on MUP, you will be performance managed out the door.

You won't be able to sue and they have no obligation to COST themselves when you are not producing enough work to get off makeup pay.

My prediction is that they'll just raise the - minimum line requirement, -sm

and if it's not met, and they have to fork out minimum wage (at ANY rate, old or new), they'll make a big stink about it with the poor MTs.

Don't forget - no matter what anyone, government or otherwise, does to try to help MTs, we'll still get the short end of the stick, every time.

A $15.00 minimum wage would equate to 375 lines per hour at .04 per line. That's 3000 lines a day for an 8 hour day! The best I have ever done was 2700 lines editing in an 8 hour day and that was only once and someplace where I had been doing the same doctors for 6 years. I have heard in various places on these boards that if you are supposed to work full-time and your pay (by the line or character) doesn't equal minimum wage for those hours, you can get unemployment even though you still have a job.
