Hourly rate is just barely above minimum wage in my state. - Where is this going?

Posted: Jul 11, 2014

I am truly at a loss to understand why my pay continues to decline. I thought I already hit rockbottom. I am averaging far, far less than I did 30 years ago.

Hourly rate - Fatigued Fingers

My pay has dropped by over $300 a month since the beginning of January of this year. I find it ironic that since I retired, I now make more money per month than I did working.

My motivation is in the septic tank. - sm

No matter how hard I try, no matter how diligent, no matter whatever, I cannot get back to where I was even 3 years ago let alone 30. Like I said, I have no motivation anymore. I need to get out of here PDQ.

If what they want are newbies who don't care about wages, they can have them. - Not so old MT

I have a lot of experience and have always done a stellar job, but I will be leaving this greedy company very soon. They have no respect for integrity, loyalty, skill, experience, wisdom, nothing that counts in life. Nuance and companies like them are squeezing out the middle-aged worker. I guess they want us to be homeless and leech off the system.

The newbies will soon learn they can - MAKE MORE MONEY OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION

[ In Reply To ..]
House cleaners make upwards of $20/hour, babysitters $15/hour, landscapers $20-25/hour. These are physical jobs, but most of the newbies are young and can handle the physicality of the jobs. They will soon find out medical transcription takes too much brain power and is way too stressful and abusive for $10/hour or less.

Or the newbies can become QA or TSM - anon

Where they can make lots of money and be totally useless. Nuance obviously hires QA that don't know squat (at least from what I see in FIASCO). and my TSM can't even send out an email or explain account specs without CRITICAL ERRORS!

It is - sm

The quality of dictation has dropped to the bottom of the barrel. That is if you are lucky enough to be on your primary account. If you are one of those lucky ones, they have so overstaffed each account, you only get to do 1 of those 10 jobs. Otherwise, they are switching you to every known horrible account and the quality of dictation was just bad to begin with. It takes a toll on the line count in the worst way.

What's The Hype About Getting Your State's Minimum Wage.....
May 29, 2012

if you don't get it when there is no work?  Seems like they are a stickler about punching a time clock and hours and say it's so you at least get minimum wage but I'm seeing things about people running out of work and not getting paid while they sit and wait for work.  Can anyone enlighten me about this policy?? ...

Minimum Wage Goes Up In My State Today.
Sep 01, 2014

Oh goody. I can barely make minimum wage most days to begin with, and as of today minimum wage in my state has gone up by 75 cents. MUP here I come! I can't wait for all the e-mails from my TSM telling me I need to be more productive and that I'm getting too much MUP. I have to do about 250 lines extra every day now to make the new min wage. Wonderful! Meanwhile, I'm sitting here with no work. *smacks head against keyboard* ...

VA Contracts - You Should Be Paid A Minimum Hourly Wage
Sep 18, 2012

If you work for a transcription company on a VA hospital contract, you should be paid a minimum hourly wage as well as receive benefits per the Service Contract Act.  You may be even be eligible for back pay if you have not been paid correctly.  You can contact the Department of Labor and file a claim anonymously against your employer.   http://www.dol.gov/compliance/topics/wages-fed-contracts.htm ...

Minimum Wage--piece Rate Law
May 31, 2013

Of course, we all know about minimum wage laws but I was wondering if any one has any knowledge as to whether there might be a minimum piece-rate wage law.  I think if there was such a law, organizations such as MM would not be able to pay their highly-trained and highly-skilled employees as though they were a bunch of uneducated laborers. ...

Minimum Wage Is Better Than No Wage, I Guess
May 29, 2013

Too bad we can't just type our way to $16, $17, and upwards of $20 per hour anymore.  Shoot, with the amount of work available, I guess I should consider myself lucky to even get MINIMUM WAGE. (Wish I was)!  ...

MUP/state Min Wage Etc.
Feb 12, 2015

This may be a stupid question, but is the minimum for lines expected changed in a state where the minimum wage is higher? I was fired in June for not reaching the min daily line count and went below 99% on 2 of the 3 weeks I was on probation. Illinois has an $8.25 min wage. I was at 98.25% for 2 out of the 3 weeks. (I know that has nothing to do with my question...) I want to remind everybody AGAIN, if you are threatened in any way about losing your job, FIND A WAY TO COPY THE EMAILS! I ...

If VR Were Done At An Hourly Wage,
Dec 30, 2012

would it be a more tolerable thing?  My current job is currently straight transcription but don't know how long that will last.  I know of a job opening with VR at an hourly rate, but have always hated VR in the past.  The contemplated position uses the Mmodal/Docuscribe and looks simpler than the systems I used in the past.  Do you think I should I hang on to what I have, even with a recent reduction in pay, or go for the hourly VR that also has better benefits? ...

Jun 18, 2012

I'm just trying to figure out what the hourly wage might be for an "experienced"  MT if they were to start making $.08 per 65 cpl if they had a pretty good account and could type 75 words per minute.....and just an estimate would be appreciated...Thank you for your input. ...

State Minimum Wages Differ. See Link Within.
Nov 30, 2014

Why is it fair that the base pay, if we will now be paid at minimum wage, not discriminatory because some states pay more and others less?  After all, we are all doing the same job. I happen to live in a state (not California or western states) where the minimum is higher than, say, others, states in the South as an example.  Yet, every day, the individual MT no matter where they live gets up, goes to work, fulfills their commitment to this slave labor camp aka Nuance.  Does it m ...

What Happens When You Get Less Than Minimum Wage?

Minimum Wage In MA And MUP
Nov 20, 2013

Massachusetts may well pass a minimum wage of $11 (over 3 years).  It's passed the state senate.  Parts of WA (Seatac) actually have a $15 minimum wage.  Wonder what Nuance will do about MUP now, since so many in those states will be getting it.  Could get interesting.  ...

DC Minimum Wage
Dec 18, 2013

Okay, so I read by 2015, DC wants minimum wage to be $11.50 an hour. I'm assuming by that time Nuance will make our minimum line count reflect this increase - approximately 280 lph, especially since WE NEVER GET A RAISE. ...

At Least Got Minimum Wage
Dec 17, 2014

Bottom line is, regardless of the new pay rules, it's hard to even make above minimum wage before or after the new rules. So at least federal law guarantees minimum wage. Beyond that, my goal is to get out of this field and leave this MTSO company ASAP, though it won't happen overnight. ...

Minimum Wage
Jan 25, 2015

A $15.00 minimum wage would equate to 375 lines per hour at .04 per line. That's 3000 lines a day for an 8 hour day! The best I have ever done was 2700 lines editing in an 8 hour day and that was only once and someplace where I had been doing the same doctors for 6 years. Guess I would get fired for always getting MUP. And by the way, that's 428 lines per hour (3424 lines per day) at .035 per line and 500 lines per hour at 0.03 (4000 lines per day). If more cities raise the ...

What Would Be A Reasonable Hourly Wage For A Medical Transcriptionist Of 12.5 Years?
Nov 30, 2012

Hi: I have worked for the same hospital for 12.5 years, so there is a lot of loyalty there. I live in a southern state in the USA. I get paid an hourly pay plus $0.47 incentive for anything over 90 minutes. My hourly pay to me is low, but not below $10.00 an hour. Is 20.00 per hour appropriate or am I wrong? Thanks in advance for the advice. PS: I am not here for a debate just want to know what is a good hourly pay for 12.5 years. Thanks, Mel ...

Concern About Minimum Wage
Mar 15, 2010

Working Below Minimum Wage
Apr 05, 2010

With the last spate of "changes" including institution of the latest version of DocQScribe -- the blossoming of the "swap board" and the "waving bye-bye" of accounts of 8-years' duration -- as they switch to using TEMPLATES (God Bless Electronic Medical Records) --my income has dropped more than 50% in the last 6 months.  But hey, I'm not concerned.  After all, I'm an idiot to begin with.  I have no intellect, no language skills, no research skills, no "shorth ...

Minimum Wage On Pay Stub
Jun 10, 2010

On today's check I had 0.25 hours at minimum wage, and I have no idea why. I have always produced my 150 lph minimum every day since I started. I am not making a ton of money, but my hourly average is more than minimum wage. Now I am getting really paranoid. Of course, I am in the over 10 cpl category. This just can't be right, but I fear it has put me on some big-wig's termination radar. ...

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF MINIMUM WAGE APPLIES TO MT'S

Minimum Wage Question. (sm)
Nov 14, 2011

I have heard in various places on these boards that if you are supposed to work full-time and your pay (by the line or character) doesn't equal minimum wage for those hours, you can get unemployment even though you still have a job. Does anyone know if that is true? Does it apply to part-time work? If anyone has a link to valid information, please let me know. I don't even know where to look, but I'm dying here with NJA when I'm supposed to be working, getting no response ...

SGS Pays SOME MTs Minimum Wage
Nov 27, 2011

On a post below about SGS, an MT states that she is being paid minimum wage.  She states she had to 'fight' for it, however, they are paying her minimum wage on the accounts where she is scheduled, and expected, to sit in front of her computer when there is very little work. I have asked several coworkers about this, and some of them are being paid minimum wage, as well.  Not all; only the ones who requested (demanded) it. THERE GOES ALL MTSO CLAIMS THAT SINCE WE' ...

Minimum Wage Issue Again
Dec 02, 2011

I was reading a post placed earlier today about minimum wage and calling employment lawyers, etc.  Why can't we all get together, hire someone to represent us (like a lobbyist) or start our own organization since AAMT bailed on us.  There is power in numbers.  We just need someone who is a leader to step forward and make this happen.  I would be willing to pay a small sum of money on my part to get something started for us to have some type of representation to get our i ...

STILL Making Just Over Minimum Wage!
Apr 04, 2012

I LOVE working from home. I love my CCM, she is extremely understanding and flexible, which is what I need! Due to this, a few weeks ago I decided I just had a "bad attitude" and needed an adjustment. So I put my nose to the grindstone and produced almost 5,000 more lines than normal or required (80 hours). I had quite a few straight transcription jobs, and was confident my paycheck for the last pay period would be awesome! Although it was approximately $70 more than normal, I still figured ...

MTSO And The Minimum Wage
Jun 25, 2012

I decided to drive to the Labor Department and ask them directly about this issue, with respect to the fact that MTs who work as employees are paid "per line." The guy said, "It doesn't matter what type of work you do, by federal law you must be paid mininum wage." --- Even if the agreement is for "per line," it must equal mininum wage. So folks ... start keeping very strict records of when you're working and ONLY when you're working. That means, if you get up to go to the ...

Minimum Wage With Overhead?
Feb 25, 2013

I graduated last year from MTEC.  I've been working since November at a national company and am earning minimum wage of $8.00.  Many recommend that you earn a certificate--starting with the RMT and later the CMT.  According to my research, each test costs about $200.  In addition, it is recommended that one keep up with the field by attending conferences and the like occasionally, which also tends to cost some money.  Now, I can understand the "overhead" if being a ...

Even With Accurate ASR, Still Minimum Wage.
Mar 18, 2013

I had a couple of ASR reports that were stellar, being of the quality we were promised (of course, not from my usual accounts), and yet, the lph was still around minimum wage (hovering around 200). What's up with that!? The new statistics graphic shows the proof. Geez, they keep handing us more and more proof that earning a living wage doing ASR for MM is hopeless. Anyone doing at least 300 lph without having dictator standard reports? ...
