why doesnt anyone hire newgrads? - liz

I graduated from MTEC 4 months ago with a 99% GPA and found a job as an IC in November. I was told I would have to do 60 minutes as a minimum a day and have not received over 60 minutes but maybe 3 times in 3 months. Today I got 1 SINGLE DICTATION 2.3 minutes long!!! I am now looking for a new job. Hospitals in my area either do not have positions or are not hiring as I cannot find any transcription work in the area, and I can't seem to find anyone who will hire me with less than a year's experience. Am I stuck in this crappy job until I have 3 or more years experience?? I can't pay my bills with this income! AGGHHH!

Even very experienced MTs are having a hard time getting - work. You might be in for a rough road. nm

There are some companies out there that will hire newbies, however here are some issues: First some of the new grads think that they should be paid as much as the ones with experience. Second, people try to contact those who want to work through sites like this one but because they contact them personally and not through the forum itself, they are asked not to, but are accused of some underhanded trick. Not all people wish to have a million emails coming in, in order to find someone who they wish to work with. It is much easier to contact them and have whom you wish to send you a resume do so. Thirdly, this business is not paying what everyone thinks that it is paying, docs are getting tighter and tighter on money, the MTSO cannot pay out all their profits, thus there would not be any MTSO's. The transcriptionist have made this business what it is, good or bad. This is a good profession, it has its ups and downs like anything else, but look at the advantages, you work from home, you dont have to pay that babysitter, you dont have to pay fuel to drive into the city, you dont have to buy work clothes, etc. So what are people all up in arms about, newbies are not going to be paid what experienced are, but get your foot in the door, work at it, get the experience. There are peeps who will hire you, train you the way they want things done and they are not underhanded they just know that school is not all there is to this type job, experience goes a long way, but at least they are willing to train you and bump you up as you gain that experience etc.

Most of us who have experience are making less than when we started out! They are constantly seeking excuses to cut our pay and make us do more and more for free (headers, footers, spaces, whatever!). We don't get raises, we get pay cuts! And we most certainly do NOT get bumped up - we just get punished with the hard dictations while they give all the good stuff to either the newbies or offshore people! This is the only industry where the more you know, the less they value you. Its a dead end and getting deader every day.

Liz, I am so sorry you are in this position. The reason no one hires new grads is because HR can hire a highly experienced, seasoned MT for the same money. The market has become oversaturated through no fault of the MTs. Offshoring has taken its toll as well. Long story short: You sound like a young person--and a smart one--and I think the best thing might be to cut your losses and start a different career. MT will NEVER be what it was. I will retire in two years, thank the Good Lord. If I were younger, I would retrain. Good luck to you.

Just a question for everyone. I accepted a position and was to hear by the end of this week from my manager about doing some training on Tuesday of next week and have not heard one word. I did receive foot pedal, etc. I put a call out to the recruiter who told me my manager was going to contact me, but of course at MQ you always have to leave a message. I've had a job offer with a transcription company..however, my problem is I'm required to have MS Word, version 2007 or 2010,,,no student/teacher/starter or trial editions....and I've gone to Best Buy, E Bay and Amazon. I know this is an extreme long-shot, but I'm wondering if there are any good MT companies out there that hire M-F and pay a fair line rate (for the way things are today anyway). I thought maybe I was doomed to the lot of those who want to hire ICs to work as employees with set hours and all sorts of other restrictions but finally I am actually working as an IC with 24-hour turnaround time with both companies. I have just accepted a job with MedQuist. I have 20+ years experience. Why are they hiring if so many people (on this board at least) have less work, or little to no work? They have pushed me to accept a position by calling me quite a few times. Why? How can they promise me 'constant work' if so many of you have no jobs available, have pay cuts, etc?
