Medical Transcription Training Programs - welchdo

Posted: Jan 19, 2012

Does anyone have any experience with the Medline School of Medical Transcription?  I am considering enrolling in their advanced program for acute care medical transcription.  I have 10 years of transcription experience, but I haven't done it since 2000 and only have family practice experience.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks!

It almost seems as if we have had a little flood of inquiries about that school lately. Last time it was mentioned, I do not recall that anyone had heard of them.

One of the reasons for going to a school is that its graduates are known for their ability to snag good job when they graduate. That is tough to find in MT and in coding. If you read the New MT forum I think you will find some thoughts on that.

What I am wondering is why you believe you need to go back to school and start all over. Surely you know the basic skills of transcribing? Surely you have a grasp of writing, report types, privacy and confidentiality, and the need and use of references? What else is there? Getting used to hearing something different? OK, so you can do something about that.

Why don't you just get the appropriate SUM package(s) from HPI and do them on your own? Answer keys are included.

Sometimes people have the expectation that something extra is going to happen because a school is involved. Kind of like magic. Really, though, learning is something we do. Schools cannot learn you to transcribe. You have to do that on your own. If you are already familiar with MT, you should be able to do that. I would not recommend that for a newb, buy it should be fine for you.

You know, I completely agree with you! Your answer was much better than mine.

thanks for the info, I just looked up HPI and see that I can free transcription downloads. I have no doubt that I can plug in and type fast and accurately, just like I did for 10 years, I just want to be able to get someone to hire me. Will the company provide the software needed to do the dictation over the internet? Back in the day we did cassette tapes. thanks for your help

Have you spoken with Andrews to see if there is anything they can do for you? They are the only school I recommend. I have been in the biz for 42 years and have never even heard of this "Medline."

Acute Care training - JW

There is a chance that I will have a chance to work in our local hospital here in town. I have been a MT for 30 years and have taken a course with Oak Horizons for acute care. Just wondering if anyone would know where I could find some voice files on the internet that I could work on until the position opens up. I have already tested and it looks good to be hired but they are slow right now and it has to pick up before they will hire. I have some time on my hands and want to put it to good use.

I would call Linda Andrews. She'll talk to you even if you aren't one of her grads - sm

Linda Andrews will talk to you and you don't have to worry that she'll try to sell you anything. She has good ideas and may have something to suggest for you.

Linda is excellent. I have spoken to her on the phone a few times over yhe years. I always come away with better focus and clearer thinking. She is always very helpful. Her advice is practical and kind. It is based on what is best for you. She is not going to try to sign you up--she just isn't that kind of person.

It would be really great if she did something like phone coaching or mentoring. I wonder if she has considered that?

MT Training - Want To Return To Transcription
Feb 08, 2011

Hi there!!  I was a medical transcriptionist eons ago - learned on an IBM Selectric typewriter while listening to a dictaphone machine.  I was quite good, if I may say so myself.  However, lots of years have gone by, I became an EMT, then an LPN, but now I'm retired.  I want to return to transcription and need the advice of experienced MTs.  It seems smart to take a course online but I really don't know which course you all would recommend.  HELP!!  I need the most comprehensive ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

I quit a job a dozen years ago to jump into the "Work At Home" dream.  I had little money, was quite naive, worked from dark to dark with absolutely no help from the small MTSO, who later ripped me off $5,000.  BUT, I learned. After my first experience with "running out of work", I just found more work.  I got unusually lucky and found a job and was MTing again in a few days. That gig gave me nearly 10 years of working for another small MTSO.  I got busy and made tons of mon ...
