MT Internship - Diane

Posted: Oct 28, 2009

I am wondering how many MT's currently working, did an internship.

What are some favorite, basic reference materials? (on-line or hard copy)

How do you use the BOS?

What are the best study materials to strengthen grammar/puctuation ?

Look forward to connecting to others in this community.

No internship. Sounds like a good idea though. No MT school either. Learned on the job (1 week in office and then went home). However, did an internship in a medical record dpt when I was studying medical record admin. Only transcribed (attempted to transcribe) one report there though (was learning all functions of the department).

BOS - only if I have to (if company requires it). Some companies have several different style things going on, including their own style guide, but the most important thing is what style the client wants. Currently I am working for some companies that do require BOS as the default (unless client wants something different). If we have to use BOS I wish they would stop changing things and stick with what they have already.

reference books - I like Stedman's books and on-line references. I Google a lot but you have to be able to pick out the good references from the crappy ones when you use the internet.. I think it's good to use the reference books more in the beginning. There are lots of wrong spellings on the internet.

grammar/spelling references.. I don't know, but there must be hundreds of good books for that.

No internship, either. My school offered one during my 2 years of school (University Associate Degree), but the head doctor at the hospital they wanted me to work said no. And that was 35 years. If I would have had my internship I never would have finished my second year and would have gone into something different; even that long ago.

For grammar/punctuation type in grammar/punctuation in the google or yahoo searc and there are many. You will probably fine something that will fit your needs.

I am willing to complete an unpaid internship with a known company to gain the experience that almost all the medical transcription services are currently requiring. It seems to me that as a new medical transcriptionist, the daily feedback is needed to really gain the necessary vocabulary to be able to keep up a decent production level, which of course is required to keep one's employment.

No internship, but I went to a good MT school. - sm

I use Stedman's Equipment Words a lot.

I have the BOS2 on KeyNote and can search that, so I use it a lot. Wish it were possible to get BOS3 like that. I read the things that they changed in the intro, and sometimes look up certain things.

I like the Gregg Reference Manual for grammar and punctuation.

I have a lot of hard copy reference, but I mainly Google because it is faster. You can Google almost anything, but I try to find information in a reliable source like a published journal before I use it in a report.

Good luck to you!

Online Programs And Internship Hours?
Feb 27, 2011

One more question from me! HIM programs for an associate's degree usually require an internship which, of course, gives you experience in a hospital setting that will be valuable and possibly lead to a job. Do any of the online certificate programs do this? Did you have the opportunity while in school to do an internship that your school helped you set up? I am looking at Andrews and Career Step. Initially only Andrews but in reviewing more I have realized I can probably get a lot more fi ...

Caution To Students And New Grads - Scam Alert - Do MT Work (Internship) For Free
Mar 10, 2011

There is still another scam company out there offering to help "train" students and graduates. They will kindly let you do their real work, the work clients are paying them for. This is unacceptable and unethical. It will not look good on your resume because potential employers do not look kindly on this. If, for example, they find out that you did your 'internship' with XYZ Company, you will probably never know the reason why your resume was rejected or tossed.  Working for free ...
