fluency line count - poorMT

Posted: Feb 15, 2014

i was just wondering if anyone has managed to really be faster on ASR than straight transcription, and if so, how long it took.  my line count is only slight better than it was before, if that, and with ASR pay, my paycheck is about half of what it was.  is there hope for improvement?  or is that a joke?  and advice?

Heck Yes!! - Sarah

Of course you will get faster with ASR just like you did with straight typing. The key before was to learn the terminology and the client profile, etc. Now start thinking of short cuts while you are typing. For instance, I never look anything up twice. Once I confirm a word(s) I put them in my expansions. If I can never spell something correctly, I add it to my expansions (typed the wrong way/then the correct way-- aggitation versus agitation). I add double words to my expansions using the first word and then the first initial of the second word. All medications go in my expansions in a short form, in a first-letter capital form, etc. It seems like you are taking a lot of time to do this, but it saves lots of time in the end.

I average $16.50 an hour. Hate straight transcription now - even log off when i get a straight one

I make more with ASR because it is more of a challenge to me and less boring. I put my speed all the way at 2 and zoom through the reports.

Dang ... I want to do that ... - anon

I'm not being sarcastic ... I mean, I really want to do that. I'm at about $13.50/hr or so but I'm on a mad quest this year to boost that by year end.

I keep my speed on 0.8-1 and it's totally comfortable for me and I can pick up every little word. Any faster than that and I lose the nuances. How the devil can you HEAR at a level 2? Again, no sarcasm ... just a genuine interest in getting faster.

PS ... Why so many haters on your post? I don't get it ... they bash, instead of trying to get better. There must be a lot of reeeeeally, really comfortable people around here with their job.
well it depends on the dictator. I cant do 2 on every report - but most yes

I have pretty much the same dictators all the time, a lot of clinic notes. I know that may not last forever but for now this is what is working for me.

Speeding up to "2" -- Not a great idea - Sarah

[ In Reply To ..]
I too average $16.50 and I just wanted to say that upping the speed to 2 is not a fantastic idea, especially when we are working on many, many different accounts. I am comfortable on most jobs at 1 or 1.2. If the dictator is an extremely slow speaker, yes, then upping the speed may be of benefit.
Aside from coming up with short cuts, concentrating on what is being said is the most important "tool", and of course if what you are reading and hearing doesn't make sense, then its usually not correct (Judge Judy says don't pee on my leg and tell me its raining).
If you have the mind set that ASR is only a tool to help your aching hands and that you are "guiding the ship" then you get quicker. In other words, you are the only one in charge of the document you are typing. When someone audits the work you can't say, but that is the way ASR had it, so I thought it was correct. So, in your mind you should be saying I am the final proofreader for this report and it has to be perfect.

I dont work on many many accounts. I have pretty much the - same dictators.

like I said above, may not last forever but this is what works for me now

THANK YOU! - poorMT

thanks everyone for the feedback. gives me hope. i'm doing all the things that have been suggested. i remember years ago when i did this before, i was slower at ASR then too and eventually had to quit my job and find another company to work for. alas, here i am back again but i'm trying hard and i just seem so much slower on ASR. i'll keep working on it. maybe i'll get better. thanks again.
as a side note, i do hate ASR. i love doing transcription. so much more interesting to me. this is just tedious. but again, i'll keep at it.

Trick On Fluency With Line Count
Apr 15, 2015

I discovered this recently and thought I would share. I always used to punch out to go to the bathroom or anytime I would get up so that my inactive time would not build. I figured out today if you upload a job and don't hit enter again to download the next one Fluency is in limbo. Meaning the inactive time is not being counted against you. SOOO if you need to go throw in that load or laundry or use the bathroom upload the job you are working on but don't download the next one. L ...

VR Line Count - What Kind Of Line Production Should I Shoot For
Mar 24, 2011

I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. The company I will be working for wants a minimum of 10,000 lines in a payperiod which the lady said even with part time ...

Character Count/line Count
Feb 23, 2011

Is this correct? I type 70,000 characters a day. I am paid by the 65 character line so I would divide 70,000 by 65 to get 1076, then multiple that by pay per line, say $.10 and get $107. If this is not correct then what is the formula? And what is the average number of lines per day? Thanks so much for the info. ...

Line Count...
Sep 19, 2012

I have been working for this company for about 18 month and so far so good. It was even bought out by a bigger company and everything stayed the same with no problems. They don't bother me, I do my work and everything is fine. About 6 months ago my line count started going way down and I really just chalked it up to not being able to concentrate as much because my baby started walking and basically making it impossible for me to work. For the past week my line count has about doubled. ...

Need Line Count Help
May 04, 2013

I have been told that I need to increase my LPH.  So last night I kept track of the lines of each document done by using MS Word.  But later when I compared it to Nuance's line tracker (ichart) it only listed half the lines that MS Word listed.  How can this be?  I realized that Word my count blank lines, but how can there possibly be that much difference?  I felt like I really kicked butt last night, but then to look at LPH with Nuance's ichart I felt cheated/ ...

Receiving Only A % Of Line Count??

Is it typical to only receive a percentage of your edited lines because "editing is faster and better" than straight transcription?  I am new to VR, but this seems odd to me.
