Word expanders, pros and cons - steph

I am getting a new computer with Windows 7 and would like to know what word expander programs a person would find simple, minimal learning curve, pros and cons and what is out there. I have always used autocorrect, but feel with a MT expander would increase my production better. Any advice, what to stay away from and what do you like about it or not?

I think ShortCut and ShortHand are similar, with virtually no learning curve. Many like Instant Text, which I bought, but the learning curve is ridiculous and the program complex. The instruction book is the size of a Reader's Digest! I gave up on it.

Below is a link to a comprehensive list of text expanders, which lists prices as well. Some of them are free. If you don't have to make a decision immediately, you could download some of the free ones and see which one that you like the most. Some of the free ones are quite good.

Personally I use Shorthand, basically because I have used it for years, it's easy to use and I think they have a free 30-day trial. But if I were just starting out with expanders, with the free ones on the market now, I would test drive a few of them first before paying for one.

I'm not the OP, but thank you for this list! I was using PhraseExpander, but it's just not compatible with the MT field. I will be giving the others on this list a try!

Mine uses Shorthand. I've been through a ton with her. It's the easiest one I think and it works well.
I wrote a program to back up and restore Shorthand files that works just for Shorthand. She has over 38,000 entries.

I have read so many pros and cons. Running out of work (that's a problem I have right now). Do you think, with the current state of affairs with the MT industry, that it would be worth trying to start a transcription company? I'm torn.
