Transition from Transcription to Billing/Coding - Toni

Posted: Nov 14, 2011

I am a medical transcriptionist that has been typing radiology the last 11 years. My job is going to be phased out by voice recognition soon. I'm thinking of going back to school for medical billing/coding. Has anyone else made this transition? Do you like or hate it?

Coding will be gone in just a few years. - VAMT

My suggestion is that you do a search and read the numerous threads discussing the fact that technology will soon render coding obsolete. Why invest time and money into learning something that won't even be around in 5 years?

Good luck!

Oh, and BTW: You are a medical transcriptionist WHO, not THAT. You are a PERSON (who), not a THING (that).

You may be right - Toni

You are right, I am a person not a thing. Sorry about that. And you may be right about coding becoming obsolete soon. I'm worried because transcription is all I know and I don't know what other "job" to move on to. I thought billing/coding would be something I could move on to. I worry about spending thousands of dollars on an education that will put me right back where I am now eventually. Sigh...

If I could learn on-the-job, I'd be willing to switch - to coding, but wont invest thousands -sm

in a school, or a couple years of my already too-short time, in something that will likely be farmed out to the Indians.
Transition - Ms. MT

Toni, I took a coding course (finished in February) and currently work doing a coding-related job for the same employer because there is not enough transcription work for everyone right now since we switched to VR. I miss transcription, though, and would go to work for one of the companies except that my benefits are really good. It never hurts to have a back-up, but coding jobs are difficult to get without certifioation and experience unless you already have a foot in the door. I don't know about coding being outsourced, but it is becoming computer assisted, and that might reduce the demand for coders in the future.
Ms. MT a question - Toni

What course did you take? I am looking into that now. Hearing good things about Andrews.
Andrews - Ms. MT

Andrews is a well-respected school, particularly in this forum, I did not attend there and would prefer not to share the name of my program. AHIMA also offers an inpatient/outpatient coding program. AAPC offers an outpatient program, they are both well respected and widely recognized by the health care community. Several community colleges also offer coding programs if you want to attend classes on site and work toward a degree.
Santa Barbara City College - Mary

Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) has AHIMA approved HIT programs all available online: Medical Coding Specialist Certificate, AA degrees in RHIA and RHIT, and Cancer Tumor Registrar. This is a community college so the rates as less than a lot of online schools.

read the rules VAMT - peachey

you aren't supposed to correct grammar or spelling here. Read the rules.

I think it's a great idea! I talked with a physician today about coding - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The physician I talked to said that coding is going to be more in demand in the future, not in doctors' offices, but in hospitals, so you need proper credentials, a CCS. We talked about the fact that in doctors' offices and small clinics, they don't really need coders and never have, but the new changes in coding are complicated. He said coding is going to be a big thing for years to come.

Has Anyone Made The Successful Transition To Coding/billing
Sep 07, 2013

I'm thinking about getting certified in this area. Mostly considering coding as that has the smallest contact with patients and I get to work independently. I had some schooling about 20 years ago for coding, have been a transcriptionist 16 years, plus QA specialist and editor. I just want short-term schooling. I have hesitated going into this field because I am afraid it will go overseas, and that no one will give new hires a chance. I know one gal who went to school for it and gave ...

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Using Dragon Medical Practice, Version 2 For Transcription, Coding, Billing, Editing - Is It Worth I
Dec 29, 2014

It was recently suggested to me that I get Dragon Medical practice Edition, Version 2 for use on transcription, coding, billing and editing. As someone who works from home, I am hoping to investigate the pros and cons of investing in this program and whether its worth it ($1,399.00!!) Does anyone have any experience using this program for transcription, etc who would like to comment? Is it worth the time investment and the money investment? Is the program fairly easy to set up and use ie: l ...

Transition From MT To Coding...
Mar 17, 2011

I'm thinking of making the jump after years (22+) in MT and LT and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on the best way to go about doing this.  I have found a couple of prep courses for the CCP exam, but it would be nice if I could hear some actual experiences that people have had with some of the actual courses out there.  It would be great if you could provide links to the places that y'all have gone to.  Feel free to e-mail me if you'd prefer.  Tha ...

Transition From MT To Coding
Sep 19, 2013

A question for anyone. Would you enroll in a community college program for medical coding at 57 knowing it would cost 5 grand to complete the course, and also with the knowledge that there are very few if any entry-level positions available in coding on the west coast. I see positions for in-house MT's and coders alike in other parts of the country all the time, but not so much on the west coast. I'm torn about this question, whether the commitment required would be worth it as I ...

Billing Vs Coding
Apr 05, 2011

Quick question - medical billing and medical coding are two totally separate entities, right?  Meaning, you have schools for billing and schools for coding or schools that teach coding OR billing.. Billing And Coding
Apr 11, 2011

I have a stupid question.  When I finished my MT course with Allied Medical School, I then found out they are NOT (federally) accredited, they do not assist you in finding positions, and they do not assist in helping you become certified.  In other words, I felt that I wasted all of that money.  As a newbe I was unable to find a job.  I started apprenticing with a company, paid their $500 fee for software, and after 8-9 months, found they had changed their name.  Apparently, they were getti ...

Looking Into Coding And Billing
Sep 30, 2011

I have been an MT for 20+ years and now looking into coding and billing... Would you recommend it? I am considering this, but looking for some words of wisdom prior to making a decision. I see Career Step offers the program, but not familiar enough with Career Step to know if they are a reputable. I have been told that coding is on its way out like transcription and not to waste my time, but only heard that from one person so far.  Anything you can share with me would be great! Thanks :) ...

Billing And Coding With MT Background
Jun 15, 2010

I have a background in medical transcription however I am unable to sit in the same position (foot pedal - headset - typing) for any length of time.  I broke my neck many years ago and didn't know when I was in school that this was going to prevent me from doing this career on even a part time basis and after graduating with high honors and having great employee/employer relationships. I am wondering if it is feasible to do billing and coding with medical transcription in a home offic ...

Best Job Prospects? Billing Or Coding?
May 29, 2014

As a starving MT, I am going to take the plunge through AAPC to enroll either in their coding or billing program.  I cannot afford both.  Actually, I cannot afford either, but I feel I have to invest in the future away from MT.  I've read the forums at AAPC, and some are saying there are too many credentialed coders and not enough jobs.  I do not know what the job impact will be, if any, once ICD-10 is implemented, if it is implemented, and the need for more coders.  ...

Transcriptionist Also Does Medical Coding/billing?
Nov 16, 2009

I was wondering if anyone who is a transcriptionist also does medical coding/billing.  I wonder if we are any safer with this field and what the pay is like.  It looks to be about the same from what I have found on line.  I have been doing transcription for 10 years and am getting tired of what is happening in the industry.  It is tedious, hard work to sit on your butt all day and only get paid when your fingers are on the keys.  I am thinking of working in an office or hospital for a chang ...

Future In Medical Coding / Billing
Feb 08, 2012

I have a question about coding and billing.  For three years in the '90s, I coded and transcribed for a small, rural, hospital.  I was responsible for outpatient, ER, inpatient, surgical etc. coding and transcription.  It was mostly ICD-9, and HCPC coding.  If I want to code from home in the future, what would you suggest I do, an online program?  Do you think coding from home would be an opportunity or do most hospitals/clinics/physicians require experience at a facility first, and wo ...
