Non-stat reports labeled as stat - Drives me nuts

Posted: Sep 01, 2014

I know this shouldn't bother me, but I have this doctor (and he has a PA-C under him that does it too) that STAT every file.  He's an urgent care doc, so I get that he thinks because the place he works is called "Urgent Care" that everything he does must, therefore, be "urgent."  But it's simply not true.  Your "urgent" sinus infection which you felt you needed to STAT got pushed in front of several files that your colleagues who actually sent patients to the ER by ambulance but didn't think that the report needed to be done STAT.

Of course, he's an ESL and a horrible dictator, so the reason it bothers me most likely has to do with the fact that I'm the only MT left on the account tonight and now I'll be stuck with only his work until the end of my shift.

I've brought this up to my manager in the past, and she 100% agrees that he shouldn't be doing this, that he was an "arrogant hat" for doing it, and that she would notify the client (especially since they pay more for STATS), but apparently he's special. Whatever.

Just venting.  I hate working holidays for pennies. Bah humbug. ;-)

Unfortunately, since all the doctors - are demi-gods

and walk on water, they get to do whatever they want, and these days, all the transcription departments, whether in-house or outsourced, knock themselves out to kiss their behinds because they all know that it is just a matter of time before neither us nor them will be needed.

I was thinking something similar to your topic of non-stat dictated as stat. I have had doctors and others dictate all their discharge summaries as stat.

Tonight I have this absolutely horrid ESL dictating "this is a stat H&P" on everything he did tonight. What makes it so laughable is that it takes 3-5 times as long to edit his VR reports because his dictation is such colossal crap. So essentially anything he dictates, whether he says stat or not, is just going to take an awful long time. Just how do they do it? Open their mouths 1/4 inch and do all that dictation?

I have to laugh at one doc...SM - Old Anon

who no matter what he dictates says at the end of the dictation, "please make this stat." It's usually transcribed within an hour or two after he dictates it, and it was never entered in the system as a stat in the first place, just a regular old note. I always shake my head and wonder at the ignorance.

Me too - grrrrrr

I have two of those. Hate them both.

One is extremely picky and will ring the office to complain if he thinks we're taking too long. He's part of a big inner-city hospital and has actually said that he doesn't care if his "urgent" files that were only just dictated push files that are almost out of TAT down in the pool. Thankfully his are usually fairly short and very repetitive - it's the only thing that's good about them.

The other one is worse. He speaks English with an accent (maybe South African or NZ) but he's fairly clear and doesn't rush. Either he thinks he's unintelligible or that we're dumb (or both). He dictates every 10-minute file like this (for a line count your perfect dream dictator would rattle out in four minutes at most):
"She had a positive fecal occult blood test.
I'll say that again.
She had.
A positive.
Fecal.
Occult.
Blood test.
That's F for Friday. E for Edward. C for cat. A for apple... "

And every letter is "urgent" because he dictates two days before their NEXT appointment instead of when he saw them six weeks ago.

A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

How Can There Be So Many Stat Reports??
Feb 25, 2010

Any idea why all of my reports are stats?  Its weird.  Most of my shift is stat reports.  When the stats run out, most of the time I get NJA. How is that possible?  They are ASR too.  I used to get probably 50/50 before the merge.  But now that I started getting all of these stats, I'm probably 90/10.    ...

IC Status And Stat Reports
Aug 16, 2010

Would appreciate opinions on this.  Working as an IC and received an email regarding stat reports.  If you are "scheduled" to be working and the hospital needs a stat you will be getting a call to transcribe the report.  I am truly sick and tired of MT services taking advantage of IC status and then expecting an employee committment.  Is it me, or is this situation getting worse?  Recently I was looking to add hours as an IC and could not believe how many  ...

Stat Intubation
Dec 06, 2009

Normally, with a brain injury patient, I would be extremely careful about pre-medicating the patient with lidocaine and fentanyl and waiting several minutes for this to s/l quit-al-bate and do a careful rapid-sequence intubation with etomidate and a long-acting paralytic agent.  My clinical impression in this unfortunate patient is she is in trouble and needs a stat intubation. ...

So What Is Up With The Stat-nts IM Address We Have?
May 29, 2013

Anyone ever notice that everytime the NTS-Stat address comes into your IM list that work gets screwy?  I mean, why have this address at all since we never use this person or address for anything?  Seems fishy to me that if you delete it, "it" knows to reappear on your IM list in, like, 20 seconds automatically.  I know, several of you will revert to calling me paranoid.  Please don't waste your breath. I'm just trying to figure out why and how the "monkey-business ...

DIctators Who STAT Everything
May 05, 2014

Anyone else get driven nuts by dictators who STAT everything?  There a group of about 3 doctors who work in the urgent care for the clinic I primarily type on and they STAT the great majority of their reports.  What's weird is that they don't make them all STAT, just the majority of them. At first I thought, "maybe they've just been trained wrong and were told that urgent notes need to be coded this way," or maybe when they call in to do their reports, the prompts they ...

Charging For STAT Dictation
Aug 15, 2010

I have an ortho doctor that I transcribe for, his office calls or emails me for STAT transcription constantly.  I work for 2 family practice docs, 2 PAs and another ortho as well so I'm pretty busy.  I often stop what I am working on to do this doctor's all-important work.  My question is what is the standard for charging for STAT dictation?  I wouldn't mind except, as I said, this happens every day.  He cost me over $40 on Thursday because I was ...
