Let go three times and called back again - Ex-MT

Posted: May 04, 2010

Why does an employer, who let you go three times in three different type of work settings, yet call me back again to work for them? It is like they had a layoff a year ago with all this BS in mind. They have to know that I would hate to go back there with all this wishy-washy stuff; it is almost like they did it on purpose so that it would be a year and they could see if they could get something for nothing. I am having enough trouble trying to get out of this insane "career" without this type of psychotic behavior from a previous employer. GHEEEZZZZ

Why do you keep going back? - Probably the reason.

Why do you keep going back? Reply . . . You're probably right - Ex-MT

You're probably right. I mean the guy sends me an Email like he is my best friend or something and words it with command sentences like he is my boss . . . I mean give me a break . . . Do they really think that I trust them with anything now? lol :-) I need a real job. The fact that I did go back three times probably is the reason; just like another employer, I quit them, went back, and then they really screwed me over and let me go again. and then three months later I get an Email from the office saying "What are you doing?" wanting me to come back . . .

I was just reading something about that is a HUGE mistake when job hunting . . . obviously . . . and that the situation will just put you right back in the bad situation you were before, probably worse, and then it probably might turn out worse.

As a once-seasonal worker... - Hayseed

When I used to work for a garden center, I used to get laid off after Christmas every year and would hopefully get recalled come spring planting season (ya never know in that industry also, as those places always seem to be on the financial edge too). That was just the nature of the beast...and since I was raised on "seasonal work," I wonder if this is why I've been able to handle the ebb and flow of this MT stuff for as many years as I have.

Although, it would be nice to collect some sort of unemployment during those weeks where there is NOTHING, but I guess that's why ramen and weenies were invented and smart people might save up for those down times (I am NOT one of those smart people--can't save for squatola).

On a side note--has anyone seen the price of weenies lately?! They're getting up there!

But getting back to what Ex-MT was talking about, I'd kind of take is a compliment that they keep calling you back when there is enough work. Did you want to work for this place full time or is this one of those extra "eggs in the basket" gigs everyone keeps talking about?

:-)

Keep going back - Ex-MT

Well, first of all EVERYONE in my family and my relatives never had good words to say when I told them I was a medical transcriptionist . . . AND . . . I have NEVER in my life experienced this kind of wishy-washy behavior from an employer. I mean NO ONE in my family or immediate family or relatives has this kind of experience with an employer and I have NEVER had this kind of experience with an employer. I think it is a matter of respect . . . I mean the people that are there get their annual salary no matter what . . . what is the difference? If there wasn't enough work to let all of us go well then there wasn't enough work for them either . . . seriously. . .

There is NO WAY I want to be an MT. As a matter of fact, I have been going to school part-time for several years to get out of this god-foresaken "career" . . . MT is a joke in my opinion . . . so I do NOT want to work for this place full-time or any time, actually, I want another job.

I have always worked as an employee in this industry and in other industries except for extra money. This is the longest that I have been without a job since I was 16 years old . . AND it WILL be the last time . . . sometimes I think this letting me go, asking me back, etc. was done on purpose, some kind of weird tactic . . . it's BS . . . I mean the HR person even agreed with me that MT is not a sustainable, respectable, dependable job -- so why do they even ask. ???

That stinks about your family not supporting you... - Hayseed

[ In Reply To ..]
That would majorly bum me out too. I come from a blue-collar family, where no one went to college, so support was always there as far as landing any kind of work, even shoveling poo (literally), so long as it was a paycheck and the effort was put into doing it well or to strive towards something better. So, I just can't imagine what kind of awfulness that must be to have even your own family thumbing their noses at you doing whatever it is you have to do to keep your head above water. Sometimes we HAVE to do things we don't necessarily like and that's when the support of friends and family is especially important. I'm sorry you don't have that right now.

They keep asking me back - Ex-MT

Thanks . . . but, unfortunately, I have the same viewpoint on medical transcription work -- it is just not reliable or sustainable. I, unfortunately, made a decision to go into this "career," after I graduated from school back in '91, and this obviously was a HUGE mistake. My immediate family is "blue collar," but that is because of my dad, the rest of my relatives have moved beyond that into something more. I really don't think working "blue collar" has anything to do with the MT work -- MT work has to do with unethical treatment of workers period. Actually even though nurses are college educated, registered staff nurses are considered "blue collar" jobs; so, you see, it just isn't because MT is considered "blue collar." MT SUCKS and I want out into something reliable and real -- this "career" path is ridiculous.

Actually about that employer who keeps asking me back, someone tonight mentioned to me that it just doesn't seem right because I made all these demands that I need and they still made a request. This person told me that the department manager seems somewhat odd and that there has to be something wrong with him or something going on, because that is just too weird.
In this "awesome" global economy... - Hayseed

Sadly, I don't think any line of work is reliable anymore. Well, no I take that back. Teachers are the new doctors (that whole "its for the children" thing) and politicians seem to do okay because they are basically whores and that's always in demand.

The recent ad onthe Job Wanted Board for Oncology scribes prompted me to check a couple of employment search sites.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were many ads for, not just "Scribes" but now for "Scribe/Medical Transcriptionist."  There are facilities looking for people they can hire directly to input in real time to their EMS.  There were several for Oncology and Emergency Medicine.  Have they finally seen the light??   MTSOs are trying to sell us ...

TeamWork Question About Our Times

A few times already I noticed that Teamwork sometimes changes my times.  Today I clocked in at "9:06" and I diligently wrote down the time as I always do.  When I went to clock off, it said my clock-in time was "9:07."  I read somewhere that our times are rounded to the nearest minute but then why isn't it always done?  ...

Pay Rate Not Keeping Up With The Times
Jan 20, 2011

I have been an MT since 1986. I would like to know why the MT industry does not raise pay rates for MTs to keep up with the rising cost of living? Are we expected to just work longer hours in order to raise our pay? I see job openings offering 7 cpl! This is ridiculous! I have never made more than 9.5 cpl.  We all know the companies are raising their contract rates for clients and making a killing, so why is our industry becoming such a slave-driving industry and what can we do about it? I am getting audited 5 jobs a day at least.  This is FAR FAR more than ever before. I used to get maybe 1 or 2 a week.
