Laptop MT? - tabz

I am sure I could use a laptop just as well as I could use a desktop. I would like to travel more before things start getting really bad in America. Plus I would like to visit family more often. I was wondering if anyone out there works off of a laptop and how they liked it. I was thinking I would get an external mouse and connect my keyboard so I can make production better. Any ideas or suggestions? I have to buy a new computer and I am debating whether I could do this or not. Thanks all your wonderful MTs! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

It depends on who you work for. I use a laptop for my secondary company (a local clinic). They use WAV files off an FTP site. I do use an external keyboard, no mouse though, as I mostly use keystrokes.

My primary account is for a local hospital and due to software and internet requirements, I only use my desktop, in my office.

So, it really depends on your account.

I have used a laptop for 8 years while doing MT. I have 3 USB ports on my new one and use an external keyboard and mouse which also plug into the USB ports. If you need more USB ports, buy an external USB hub. Plus into a USB port on the computer, and then you have enough ports. The computer I just purchased I got at Wal-Mart for just over $300 including tax -- 2 gigabytes of memory and a 250 gigabyte hard drive which meets my need and if need be, I can add more memory later.

I just got a laptop for that very reason, have family out of town and want to go visit but still work. I have used it for my local work and know it is compatible with my other work as well. I use external mouse and keyboard and it works great. I have an external USB hub so I have plenty of ports. Go for it if you account is compatible.

I use a laptop with a separate monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse. I also have a USB hub to connect all the pepherials. I also have an Internet stick so I can work anywhere. My daughter is 16 and does cheerleading and I go to the library and work while she is at practices. I tried going to a coffee shop to work but too noisy and find the library perfect. I love my setup and can work anywhere I feel like.

I bought a usb number pad for my laptop and it has 2 extra usb hubs - as well, really cheap online. NM

The company I work for installed their stuff onto my desk top and laptop for convenience. My family lives 2 hours away from me so when the kids have off of school I can go visit for as long as I want as I can take my work with me. It works great and I absolutely LOVE it!

I have my company's software on both my laptop and my PC. It is great to go visit my grandchildren. The info I received regarding HIPAA was that it is a violation to use it where there is not a secure network (airport, hotel, hospital), but it is fine to use it on secure network. I use it at my daughter's home and that is fine.

The cheapo one I am using is really noisy and hard on my fingers. I have to pound the keys. I would be able to plug my headset, mouse, foot pedal and keyboard all up to it at the same time? Or do they make adapters for USB ports?
