I think I have about decided on scribe - downtime

Posted: Jul 19, 2012

I'd like to go into coding, and I think I'd be really good at it too, but medical scribe looks like the direction to go that would require the least amount of training.  I think as soon as the summer is over and I've taken my vacation and used up some PTO, I will apply for that.  Wish me luck.

they don't pay much. - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
just follow the doc and point and click is all. boring.

They don't pay much compared to - oh, let's say - IAMT

[ In Reply To ..]
working as an MT!!!! Go for it, I say. Don't think it would be boring as each patient would be different and you would have a healthier work environment than sitting behind a computer stressing all day about how lousy this profession is at the present time.

Healthier work environment? Working around sick people? - You have obviously never worked in an MD office

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm only somewhat kidding about that. Some of the unhealthiest places you can possibly be would be in a medical clinic, doctor's office, or hospital.
I would have to agree with you about that to some extent. - IAMT

But bet about as much risk going to Walmart or grocery shopping anywhere. I am referring to mental health;-) and the ability to socialize, move around, and have a personnel policy in place - oh, and PTO and reasonably priced benefits perhaps that don't force you to make a decision of having to sell your firstborn to participate might be nice.

Good luck and best wishes to you... - I researched that also

but I got disheartened because I decided to search for medical organization forums and medical programs in universities and it seems the consensus from a survey I read that the powers that be strongly prefer a scribe to be a premed or medical student with the design that the experience of being a scribe while being a student will contribute to their medical education as well as help teach them documentation. As a matter of fact, a comment made from a member of the American Medical Association (he was a director) contained this phrase, "after all, they know all the medical jargon already." After reading the complete survey, the results, and the comments, I walked away with the idea that not a single person that had participated even knew medical transcriptionists exist.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, and I wish you the best of luck and the greatest of success. I'm just getting the feeling that they would strongly prefer to hire med students. I suppose scribe job opportunities would be better for MTs in locations that are not near universities with medical programs.

I'll let you know nm - downtime

What do you think about in a doctor's office? - please S/M

[ In Reply To ..]
I wonder if a doctor's office (rather than an ER/hospital setting) might be more apt to hire scribes who weren't necessarily pre-med students, etc. After all, I wouldn't think they'd want to have endless students coming and going over the years the way a hospital might not mind. The hospitals already are accustomed to having students and residents come and go every now and then.

I've been giving this career path some thought, too, but I'm very torn because it's not like there are a lot of scribes already working (at least around here) that I can talk to or observe to see if it's a job I would be able to do and enjoy.

There's a training program just starting up for scribes in my area that costs between $1500 and $2000 for the program, and, even though less than a lot of vocational training programs or 2-year degrees, that's still a lot to spend on career training for a job that seems kind of iffy at this juncture. The benefit of doing the training would seem to be to increase your confidence in using an EMR program before you're actually on the job and, possibly, some help with linking you up to doctor's offices who would want to use a scribe.

I'd like to watch this thread and see if anyone else posts any thoughts about this. It sure seems to be a fit for our skill set, but it would be a different kind of stress to be having to work on the spot with the doctor right there. I also question how well (or NOT well) the patients will take to having a non-medical person in the exam room...whether it could be a job that won't last if they decide it's not working well.

The way I thought it through - but I may be wrong

[ In Reply To ..]
Doctors have gradually been cutting costs, including staff, facilities, etc., for years now. They will hire someone if they believe it will save or make money for them.

Coding, for example, is an area that makes money, because when codes get put in properly, the doctor doesn't get paid.

That's probably more the case in larger offices and clinics though, because a one-doctor office is going to be checking codes off a list and they won't have a scribe either.

I'm very skeptical about the scribes option. Again, comparing it to coding, it may make a difference how good your training is and if you have credentials. So my conclusion is, I don't know. When I think about scribes though, I just get an uneasy feeling. I wouldn't want one in the office with me if I go to my doctor. The whole idea just seems a little flaky. I wonder if it will be thought of as a fly-by-night career, one that sounds like a great idea for a couple of years and then goes away. Anyway, those are my thoughts for whatever they are worth, which is not very much.

Revolving door at my mom's doc's office - MMO

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know about you, but when I went with my mom to her doc's office, the doc had rotating students (like Devry schools), MAs, front office, billing, etc. The only person who was permanent was the office manager in charge of the 3-ring circus. So confusing and hard to get any answers. I don't think some doctors care about rotating people in the office as long as it saves them money. The students got experience and the doc got cheap labor. I am learning coding.

Having worked in a doc's office myself, I would not mind having a scribe be in the room. I know anything I say to the doc would be put in the record and available to the office staff to read, nothing is really private.

My Take - Old MT

[ In Reply To ..]
My take is that the people hiring scribes probably are considering privacy rules, and perhaps it's easier to get "permission" (from both patient and the privacy rule people)to have a third party in the room who is actively studying medicine to go into the field.

If you do, hope you love it. It sounds fun and interesting to me. - Regarding low pay, yes, SM

[ In Reply To ..]
go go with the quick training. I suspect, though, that a lot of physicians might be willing to pay more to keep a truly competent person. Just as they once paid more for a competent transcriptionist. A high school grad who requires frequent explanations has to be an exasperating time waster and had better be awfully cute to compete with one of us. :)

Are you considering... - (see message)

[ In Reply To ..]
....a formal training program? Or do you mean the least amount of training on the job?

If you're thinking about a formal program, how long does it take? and would you mind saying roughly what it would cost?

Yes, good luck!! I hope it works out great for you.

well the site I'm looking at - downtime

[ In Reply To ..]
actually there are 2, and they don't say it costs anything. I don't really know how long it would take, doesn't tell that either. the 2 I'm looking at are ProScribe and PhysAssist. PhysAssist does say pre-med or pre-nursing "preferred" but I'll show them who's the MLS.

Thanks, and... - ...see message.

[ In Reply To ..]
"....but I'll show them who's the MLS." Indeed!!! :-)

Plus, you would stay in the job for a lot longer than a pre-med student would, I would think. ;-)

Best of luck to you!

Scribe jobs - traditionally

[ In Reply To ..]
go to pre-med, sometimes nursing students. Pre-med is a huge part of it. They will not care that you think you are an MLS. Just be realistic when you start your search. The scribe jobs in my town are by word of mouth, through the pre-med club at the university. They are not posted, and human resources knew nothing about them; handled completely within the ER department. As one scribe leaves, they pass it on to their buddy who is also pre-med. It is considered a way for a doc to teach a pre-med student; medical transcription not invited to join the club. AHDI had a very disparaging article on their site some year ago about how medical transcriptionists would not even be qualified. That's AHDI, selling us down the river.

Just sent an email to American Medical Association - and asked their opinion

[ In Reply To ..]
regarding MTs entering the position of scribes. I received any auto reply stating they would respond to my question in 2 business days, but I'm not holding my breath.

Getting Ouf Of MT, But Cannot Decided Which Way To Go...
Sep 29, 2010

I have made up my mind that I am getting out of MTing.  I am looking into coding through an online program, or getting my bachelors degree (also completely online).  I don't know which way would be more profitable/secure in the long run.  Coding, or getting my bachelors degree (my interests are computer science, psychology, or health information management, wide variety I know).  What do you think? ...

How Pay Should Be Decided
Nov 18, 2012

Here is how I think pay should be decided... 1.  You are new you get 4 CPL until you prove yourself...quality, production, etc., then in 6 months you are evaluated and a raise could be granted, 3% of course. 2.  Everyone should be evaluated on job performance once a year and if you are a good employee a raise should be granted. 3.  I believe any employee who has been with the company for 5-10 years and tier 3 you should automatically be paid 6 CPL.  Let ...

I Have Decided I'm Fed Up With MT, And Getting Out.
Sep 10, 2013

I have a good job for now but am so fed up with people who can't speak English properly, the stuttering, slurring,  mumbling, whispering, and so on, not to mention coroprate bullcrap. I thought I could hang in there to retire, but I'm finally fed up.  Finally figured out something else I can do, a couple things.  I won't have one egg dependent on one basket, and will be much happier in the long run.    Plus no more office crap, which I despise. What I Have Decided....sm
Nov 30, 2014

I have decided if this plan does turn out bad I will just sit back and work as usual. I make close to minimum wage now as it is. If I end up making only MW it wont make much of a difference. With that being said, I'll just work everyday and not push my self super hard to meet line requirements (it seems they are getting rid of them) and I wont work my tail off trying to meet all these requirements. I will work and do the best I can without stressing out all the while keeping my eyes op ...

I Have Decided To Quit....
Dec 23, 2012

This was not an easy decision.  I will be able to devote every day after Jan. 1st to find a job.  At this point, all I have to do is find something that pays minimum wage, isn't that sad!  But, something with a future and a company that gives raises, no matter how small and good insurance and time off.  This company will lose a very good MT who has had it.  I have tried to communicate on these boards my support of MModal.  It gave me hope.  I have none now ...

I Have Decided VR Is Just Dangerous!
Jul 31, 2013

Really, with this time of VR, who can actually be accountable for the errors in reports?  My VR is HORRID.  It will completely change the name of medications that the dictator dictates and on and on.  So, when a medical error is made, based on a report where the MT didn't catch a mistake on VR, how can they hold the MT solely responsible?  I mean, we didn't TYPE that error, we just missed a word while proofreading.  I wonder why they would allow something with ...

Has Anyone Decided To Leave MT For Good Because
Oct 09, 2010

of no work, unable to find a new MT job, or simply sick and tired of it?  What did you decide to do?  I feel like I'm a bit too old to return to school (not to mention I couldn't afford to do it anyway).........  I'm afraid eventually (prob sooner rather than later) there will be no need for MTs anymore, either because they off-shored it all or hospitals go with systems like EPIC.  Does anyone have any advice for an ex MT on what type of job they could quality ...

Decided To Take A Job Doing SR With M-modal. Is That A Good Program?
Jan 26, 2012

I have limited experience with SR..  did it for a while about 4 years ago.  Couldn't make any money on it though.  I'm hoping this program is a lot better than the one I used back then and will actually LEARN.  Can people make money doing SR now??  Sadly, though, I think this is the future of transcription. ...

After 30 Years Finally Decided To Embrace VR
Feb 11, 2014

This is a part-time 4 hour position, been at it for a month, and cannot get above 600 lines. I am editing on the Ex-Editor platform and I love it. Care to share any pointers, or things I can do to be more productive. I am definitely not using the mouse but still cannot get above 600 lines in 4 hours. I do have a full-time straight transcription position, and thought I would gradually ease into VR to build speed for what I will probably inevitably be doing. ...

I was going to work on my relationships both professionally and personally to see if I could get better results and resist the opportunity to strike back, quit my job, tell people off, and otherwise behave li ...

My company has always invited us to create and store template dictations for common use by everyone.
