Dragon Naturally Speaking - is there better voice recognition software out there? - Franny

Posted: Mar 22, 2012

Has anyone ever used Dragon Naturally Speaking to type up their work? Or is there better voice recognition software out there? I'm thinking if I just speak intead of type, won't that be faster? But I do not want to make the investment if it won't work or be worth it. Thanks so much!

Very Good Product - But...

You have to speak at a reasonable rate, and very succinctly. I have done it, and it came up about 99% accuracy straight off, once it knew my voice. Took about 5 minutes to train the algorithimns to my voice.

Want to clarify a couple of things.

1) If you are doing straight typing and you type fast, Dragon (or anything else) will not be faster, and will probably be slower. I type 80-100 wpm, and if I spoke as fast as I type, the VR would not be accurate.

2) I had just done a trial with it, and I thought it was quite right on, but I wasn't doing it for work, I just made up a cesarean section and dictated it myself, no dictator in my ear.

I have done it. - Cathy

I bought Dragon Naturally Speaking (11.5 version) because I thought it would be faster. It isn't really faster for me as I can type fast. It is hard to redictate without also taking pauses to listen and then repeat what you are hearing. I can type what I hear faster than I can say it back. I do use it on days that my hands are hurting to give myself a break. It's not perfect, though, and you still have to make corrections. If you used it consistently all the time it would probably learn faster, but I only use it when my hands really need a break. I think I usually end up with like 160 lph using it, but you could probably do better than that if you practiced the whole redictating thing and the accuracy got better with more use.

You all must do straight typing still. This speech program would not work for editing. This is the same concept that is taking jobs away from our industry, so that is why I say "can't beat them -- join them"

You can use for VR as well (sm) - Cathy

You can use Dragon to edit VR documents as well. You can use the voice commands to correct the text from the speech engine that is present on the screen. Unless there are only a few corrections, it is probably just as fast to type the corrections, though. Maybe there are some shortcuts that you could work with in Dragon to make it so you had to use less commands to get more (sort of like putting normals in Dragon), but I haven't spent enough time with it yet to try to figure that out.

Dragon - My experience

[ In Reply To ..]
I tried this about 5 years ago. For me, anyway, the commands were cumbersome, especially considering how often docs change direction. But the major drawback for me was that my voice gave out quickly. Some research has revealed that I was using my voice incorrectly, causing strain, hoarseness, and complete loss of voice after a short time. This also reflects a high level of stress on the job, as well.

It all sounded so promising, but I soon went back to straight typing.

I tried it also (Dragon), it was great the first day, seemed like - a dream come true, sm

subsequent days, it acted like it had never heard my voice before. You not only have to speak, but you have to wait for it to type the line and then edit the mistakes that it made. I gave up on trying to train it as one day it learned my voice and the next, I had to retrain it all over again. Very time consuming. I realized I was faster at it than the Dragon and put it back in the box. There was too much aggravation for me so not worth my time. I average about 325-375 lph straight typing depending on the usual factors that come along with each transcription job.

I have used it and loved it - me

I have used it and loved it. It takes some time to train, but once you get it going it works great. You need a good headset and a quiet background. You can have it read your word files and it saves the style like that. Not so good when it stops working and you have to re-train it. I think it is worth the price if you use it correctly and speak normal and not too slow or it will not work. hope that helps.

I am a student (SUM coursework) and I am taking my final this week. I do EVERYTHING with Dragon Naturally Speaking. In the beginning it is not faster. It works better w/steady voice input. When you are learning, stopping and starting, it has a harder time recognizing words. I also had to put in commands for expansions (on-going process). I don't think it's built for medical transcription, but if you are comfortable with putting in time and patience? It works. I have had experience w/Dragon before this, so I knew what I was getting into. I love it, but it's not for everyone.

Dragon Naturally Speaking - Voice Recognition Software
Jan 18, 2010

Hi, I have been researching this voice recognition software, and have found that about a third of MTs think it is not faster than typing, another third thinks it does not work well at all, and the final third thinks it does improve productivity.  Does anyone have any input here as to a few more opinions? Thanks, Abby ...

Dragon Voice Recognition Software Question
Dec 03, 2013

Has anyone out there ever tried the Dragon voice recognition software?  I used to edit VR for another company but now work for someone else who does not use VR and I am doing straight typing.  I am wondering if it would be worth investing in the Dragon VR software to speed up production.  I know it's created by Nuance, and they use it in their system and it's great for the dictators and the editors but what if you are a transcriptionist and want to play the audio for the ...

Dragon Naturally Speaking 11.5
Dec 16, 2011

I have the Standard version 10 and had to deal with a lot of bug issues with it.  I love the program, but I didn't like the constant problems with trying to download updates, etc.  (I have Vista).    I wondered if anyone else out there bought this updated version and was pleased with it.  I'm hoping to hear that they have the bugs worked out of this program, as the program itself is great and a valuable assest to an MT who types in Word.  Any feedback a ...

Addendum To Dragon Naturally Speaking....
Jan 18, 2010

I was thinking of using this as a replacement for typing/transcribing.  For example when I hear the dictation, I then repeat it to the Dragon voice recognition software, and it types for me. (You need to read the post before this one for it to all make sense -- sorry!) Thanks, Abby ...

Dragon Naturally Speaking Standard 10

I purchased and installed this application for some classes I am taking.  I thought it would save time with notes etc and it does ------ when functioning properly. I also contemplated the medical version for my transcription.   It is probably just me, I am sure, but I just do not know how to fine tune.  The only thing I know to do when I run into a problem is to uninstall and rei nstall.  To my knowledge there is no technical support. &nb ...

Dragon Naturally Speaking Success Stories?
Nov 12, 2009

I'd like some advice from those out there that are using this.  I have 32-bit Vista.  I have heard that version 10 is a nightmare to install with cruddy tech support from Nuance.  Therefore, I am considering going with version 9 Preferred if I can find it.  I can't afford the Medical software, but I have heard of MTs having good results with training the Preferred version to medical words.  My hands are bothering me, and I need to get this software to help out with reports.  ...

Does Anybody Use Dragon Naturally Speaking To Echo Dictate (redictate)?
Nov 08, 2010

I've tried to use the search function, but either it's not working properly or I'm not doing something right (I suspect it's not working right now).  I work for a company with a Web-based transcription platform (straight typing).  What I want to try to do to improve my productivity is to buy Dragon Naturally Speaking, load it onto my computer, echo dictate (redictate) what my docs are saying, and then cut and paste the software's output into the platform windo ...

Dragon Naturally Speaking Compatible With Scribe Platform?
Oct 02, 2014

I'm wondering if anyone knows if Dragon Naturally Speaking is compatible with Transportal's platform, I believe it's Scribe?  This is the home version, which worked quite well in the past.  I know there are a few that won't allow third party software and the program will be blocked.  I understand why as regard to HIPAA, etc.  I'm just trying to keep working as long as I can with RA. If anyone is using Dragon in conjunction with MTSO platform, I' ...

Voice Recognition - Plain Speaking Dictators

Voice Recognition "editing Software" Is A Joke
Oct 15, 2013

Voice recognition "editing software" is the bright idea of some computer software chump who knows nothing about medical transcription.  Transcription is everchanging.  No words are EVER pronounced exactly the same way each time.  Even the same voice, dialects, and dictators change from minute to minute.  It is organic.  It is also subjective depending on who is listening.  Big business has jumped on board, as they see this as a big opportunity to ...

Voice Recognition - Is Anybody Making Any Money At All On Voice?
Jan 12, 2013

I was wondering, is anybody making any money at all on voice?  I keep hearing just minimum or maybe a little more.  I call minimum wage 7.50 to 8.00 an hour.  My experience with it was at one point I was told that I hadn't made enough for minimum and they had to do make-up pay.  So how is everybody's experience with voice?  I run from it, and I just want to know if anybody really can make an money? Thanks. ...

Voice Recognition Pay

I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition.   I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it.  With 96% plus voice recognition reports and half pay from straight typing, I'm losing health care benefits.  SO UNFAIR!!! ...

(voice Recognition) VR Pay
Sep 26, 2011

Have to learn VR soon.  What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections.  Never done VR before and for some reason they make it sound so easy.   ...

How Do You Do Voice Recognition Editing?
Oct 31, 2009

Voice Recognition In India

Would Like To Get Some Opinions On Voice Recognition
Jan 12, 2011

I would like to get some opinions on voice recognition.  I've never done it before.  I've heard pretty much negativity about it, and it scares me because it sounds like a lot of companies use it.  Also it really concerns me because I have to make at the very least so much amount of money to pay my bills!  I've done clinic, hospital and at-home transcription.  The at-home transcription was not a good experience.  I actually had to go back to the hospital part-time and work a ...

Voice Recognition Myth #1
May 25, 2011

the myth is that we're teaching it! The stupid thing refuses to learn! If this were a human, he or she would have been out the door a long time ago (and the interview process would have gone something like "Oh, yeah I can do transcription, I was a receptionist at a doctor's office!).  So if there's anyone still concerned about being replaced by this thing, and resenting having to "teach" it, you can start worrying about other things (of which I'm sure you have plenty). ...
