Companies with employee status that offer flexible schedules? - moving on

Posted: Aug 05, 2012

I know this has probably been asked so many times on this board, but I am currently working for a company as an employee, full time, and I'd really like to move on. I've been there 6 years and the only thing that is holding me back right now is the fact that I need to have a flexible schedule and I don't really want IC status.

Right now, I work 2 hours in the morning and 6-7 hours in the evenings. However, if one of my kids has a dance class or karate in the evening and I'm running late, I am able to run late and just make it up by working later or over the weekend. I need to have that flexibility, as my husband works very long hours and we can never guarantee when he will be home, so I need to be able to get the kids to their lessons and whatnot. I have looked and looked and looked and can't find any companies that have this kind of flexibility aside from offering IC status, and even those companies seem to require a regular schedule with very little flexibility, plus I'm scared to death of losing my job if I were an IC, not being able to get unemployment while I looked for another job.

I know I have it good where I am as far as that aspect goes, but I'm just at the end of my rope here and can't take much more. A former co-worker of mine had told me of a few companies that hire employee status and just had a line requirement for the day, didn't matter when you worked as long as you met your lines for the day. Another company the same person told me about allowed you to work within a 12-hour period, again, whenever you wanted but within that time frame. But...when I applied to them, they said there was no such thing.

Any suggestions? I have thought about trying to go out on my own doing small accounts, but that seems impossible to me right now. I might just have to stick around here until I can have a more set schedule, but I really, really don't want to do that either!

I work for one but I'm not sure for how long. - sm

Unfortunately, there is minimal to no work these days. It used to be such a great company to work for - flexibility, employee status, basically all the things you mentioned above. I've actually been working on my resume as I think it's time to look for a new job. Bottom line, IMO, if such a company exists with all you're looking for, it won't be in business for too long.

I am afraid of that too. - moving on

Yep, that's what I'm afraid of!! I'm scared about what the future holds in general for this profession; all I hear about is companies closing left and right and merging or being sold to bigger companies. It's scary, and that's why I hate to go the IC route too. I need my job and if the company I work for did go out of business, at least as an employee I'd get unemployment while I looked for something else. As an IC you lose that, and I can't afford to go without! The company I work for, they actually do NOT allow much flexibility for most of the employees, but it was part of the deal with the company I worked for that merged with this one. As long as we (the employees that were merged over)work here, we were promised we could keep our former schedules. I'm kind of afraid even that might not last much longer, unfortunately.

Any Companies Offer Flexible Schedules?
Dec 28, 2011

Just wondering if there are any companies out there that offer flexible schedules.  I am currently a substitute teacher, so I don't have a set schedule for work.  I have about 5 years of transcriptions experience and would like to pick up about 15-25 hours of transcribing per week, but I don't want a set schedule.  Any ideas?  Thanks! ...

Independent Contractor - Must Have Flexible Schedule To Qualify For IC Status
Mar 11, 2010

I am thinking about pursuing a job as an independent contractor as I am retired and want something to do more than the money (retired hospital transcriptionist). It is my understanding that an IC must have flexible schedule to qualify for IC status, yet the job ads specify second and third shift as well as weekend days. Can they do this? I know the government is cracking down on ICs to make sure they are truly ICs (we all know the transcription companies will do everything to preserve their bo ...

Statutory Employee Vs. Traditional Employee Status Inquiry

Employee Versus IC PT Status
Nov 23, 2009

I have an interview tomorrow with a company for PT employee status.  I have been an IC for many years and love it.  I am a bit concerned about going employee as I am used to the flexibility of being able to take time off for my kids' school parties, fall, winter and spring breaks and such without it affecting my job.  Can anyone give me a clue as to how employee status works and if some companies are more flexible than others?? I would love to stay an IC, but haven't f ...

Question Regarding Employee Status
Dec 04, 2010

I've been an IC MT for 10+ years and, as such, I have no benefits, but LOVE the flexibility of being able to do what I want/need during the day as long as the work gets done on time.  When you are an employee working for an MTSO, do you have any kind of flexibility?  If your scheduled work time is 8:00-4:00, do they allow any flexibility for such things as 15 minutes to drop off/pick up your child from school?  Or an hour to go to an appt?  I see a lot here where there i ...

Question About Employee Status
Aug 24, 2013

Employee Versus IC Status
